Sexy Mobinnova élan smartbook powered by NVIDIA TegraThe Mobinnova élan netbook, a NVIDIA Tegra-powered machine, weighs just two pounds, but can deliver 720p video on its 8.9-inch screen. We aren’t sure what OS it’s running, but we do know that it has an “innovative 3D graphical user interface,” supports hardware-accelerated Flash video, has both WiFi and 3G, and can play video for five to ten hours on a single charge.

NVIDIA claims that its Tegra platform can play an audio file continuously for 600 hours (thats 25 days!) assuming that the display is turned off. Take a deep breath. We don’t know what the pricing looks like after all. Mobinnova’s Tegra announcements also include the T8 tablet, which repackages the élan in a 10.1-inch tablet form factor with GPS and HDMI out.

The picture above is a render, but it’s what they envision the final product looking like. The phone should be released in the third quarter of this year. An Android handset like this one with the dual-SIM feature definitely has us drooling.

Wi-Fire extends Wi-Fi signals

Posted in Wi-Fi by Conner Flynn on January 19th, 2009

Wi-Fire extends Wi-Fi signalsThe Wi-Fire is a USB device that will boost Wi-Fi signals by using a directional antenna and a powerful receiver that works with it’s proprietary software. With this device your computer can detect and access wireless sources within a 1,000 foot radius. And the folks at Maximum PC put it to the test.

They were surprised at being “350 feet from the router, with the signal passing through an insulated, double-thick interior wall and a steel garage door, the Wi-Fire delivered TCP throughput of 14.5Mb/s.” It’s only $79 and makes Wi-Fi a bullet that goes through said walls and garage doors.

What this means is that non-WiMAX handsets that have WiFi modules can get into the WiMAX network using this pocket sized device. There’s no word yet on when it will ship. Also no word on price. This might be the way to go to replace that expensive cable modem at home.

The touchscreen handset has a 3.1-inch 320 x 480 multitouch display, with a silver center button below and touch sensitivity all along the face. BlackBerry Curve from T-Mobile on February 11thYou’ll want to mark February 11 on your calendar, because I know you’ve been waiting. That’s when T-Mobile will launch the BlackBerry Curve 8900. It comes one week earlier than what we initially thought. Just what is “High Speed Internet”? Probably code for T-Mobile’s crappy new “Web2Go” WAP service.

Then again, it may be referring to the integrated Wi-Fi connectivity found in the Curve 8900. No HotSpot@Home? Specs include: High Speed Internet (wifi??), Personal and Work E-mail, 3.2 Megapixel Camera with Auto-Focus and Video, Address Book, Alarm Clock, GPS, Bluetooth 2.0, Calculator, Calendar, EDGE High-Speed Data, Sync with Microsoft Outlook, GPRS, Games and a whole lot more.

T-Mobile branded Samsung “Memoir” cameraphone surfaces

T-Mobile branded Samsung “Memoir” cameraphone surfacesThe latest blurry photos to surface are these two hazy pics that supposedly show-off a T-Mobile Samsung destined for the US. The alleged big brother to the Samsung Behold reportedly features an 8 megapixel camera. Tmo News is also reporting that it’s going to run on Touchwiz, the same UI as the Behold, and that it’s being called the Memoir.

It’s not a smartphone as the Touchwiz interface doesn’t have the flash and whiz-bang of Android or OSX, so don’t expect wifi. But that’s just what people are guessing. 3G is expected, along with a full html browser. Nobody knows for sure.

Spark Lamp is measures your energy usage

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on September 7th, 2008

Spark Lamp is measures your energy usageThe Spark Lamp concept by Beverly Ng is an LED lamp that you can flip over during the day to recharge itself using solar power. It’s designed to educate the owner about their power consumption. The lamp sports integrated WiFi which wirelessly keeps track of you home’s power usage. When you turn the lamp on, it will change colors and flash to tell you what your home’s power consumption is.

It’s no accident that it looks like a houseplant as a metaphor for how plants are powered by sunlight through photosynthesis. The Spark Lamp was created in reaction to the Swedish’s government response to the energy crisis. In Sweden, future homes will have smart meters that will give real-time feedback to homeowners on the internet. But data on a website is not all that engaging so the Spark lamp was developed to enhance the experience.
