Posted in Tablet PC by Conner Flynn on December 26th, 2010

Boss Magic sounds like a finishing move that will help you beat the boss in a video game, but as it turns out, they are the makers of this $139.99 7″ Android Tablet. It must be magic, since it looks a lot like the iPad. The Boss Magic Album 7″ Android Tablet 8292 features WiFi, 2GB of memory, an SD slot, mini USB connection, and a 7″ capacitive touchscreen.

Sadly it also features just a 2 to 3 hour battery life. No info on what processor is inside or what version of Android it’s running.

Study finds Wi-Fi radiation bad for trees

Posted in Wi-Fi by Conner Flynn on November 21st, 2010

Tree-huggers won’t like this news. Results from a preliminary study by DU Delft University, Wageningen University, and other institutions in the Netherlands show that WiFi radiation may be harmful to trees. The study found that WiFi radiation may cause bleeding and fissures in tree bark, which were not caused by any virus or bacteria.

According to their data, 70% of trees in urban spaces are now showing signs of damage compared to just 10% five years ago. Trees located the closest to WiFi radiation exhibited a lead-like shine on the leaves and death of the leaves’ lower and upper epidermises. Radiation from WiFi was also found to inhibit the growth of corn cobs.

Unfortunately Amazon didn’t exactly say how many of the new Kindles they have sold, but they seem to be pretty sure it’s a lot.

Archos 32 Internet Tablet hits the FCC

Posted in Archos by Conner Flynn on August 11th, 2010

Thanks to the FCC we now know what the Android-powered Archos 32 looks like. Looks like it is completely capacitive, with dedicated buttons and directional controls surrounding that 3.2-inch screen. It features built-in GPS, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a kickstand along with Bluetooth and WiFi.

It does have a microphone, but there’s no mention of a camera in the user’s manual. That circle on the back could be the integrated speaker. One of the accessories planned include a 720p-capable DVR dock, but the unit requires a proprietary connector to transfer data and charge.

Starbucks to Offer WiFi for Free July 1

Posted in Wi-Fi by Darrin Olson on June 14th, 2010

Starbucks Free WiFiThe coffee peddling behemoth Starbucks announced today that it will not be outdone by independent coffee houses nor other national chains and will begin offering unlimited free WiFi to it’s customers. Starbucks has had WiFi available for some time now, for a fee, and has most recently offered 2 free hours per day to cardholders but now is giving the service away to all.

This announcement no doubt will come as great news to frequenters of the coffee houses and bad news to anyone trying to sell WiFi within the vicinity. Please note however that the free service is only for Starbucks stores operated directly by the corporation, and not to licensed locations commonly found in airports or grocery stores.

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on June 14th, 2010

Meet the new Xbox 360. It will launch today for $299. The old Elite will be $249 and the Arcade will drop to $149. The new console looks like a stealth Xbox in glossy black with touch-sensitive buttons. According to Microsoft it’s “whisper quiet,” with one large fan instead of two.

It has integrated 802.11n WiFi, five USB ports, and 250GB of storage on a removable hard drive, though it’s not the same drive as the old console, and older Memory Units won’t work, either. To upgrade you can use a USB-to-Xbox hard drive connector cable to migrate to the new box. What do you think?

AR.DRONE From Parrot controlled by iPhone

Posted in R/C Toys by Darrin Olson on January 11th, 2010

ar.drone controlled by iPhoneThe folks at Parrot have released a new toy RC toy called the AR.Drone, a “quadricopter” that can be controlled and viewed with an iPhone or iPod touch through a WiFi connection. The AR.DRONE works like a remote control helicopter with four separate helicopter blades to maneuver the device, but that is definitely not what makes this copter cool.

What really sets this guy apart from the others is that you can control it with your iPhone or iPod touch using the built-in accelerometers which will sense which way you tip the phone and maneuver the AR.Drone accordingly. The quadricopter also has a couple of cameras on board, one for “seeing” what the AR.Drone sees real-time through the iPhone, but also another camera on the bottom which can track speed and help the ‘copter maintain a still flight.
