Netflix dominates iPad and consoles, Hulu dominates PCs

Posted in Netflix by Reuben Drake on July 27th, 2011

Netflix and Hulu dominate entirely separate sectors of digital streaming, according to a Nielsen study. Both are now available on many platforms, but Netflix is the dominant one on non-PCs, including iPads, game consoles, and media hubs, ranging from a three-to-one ratio on Apple’s tablet to seven or eight times higher.

Hulu isn’t a lame duck though. They win on computers, often by a wide margin, with 89 percent of its viewers watching on a computer versus just 42 percent of Netflix owners wanting to do the same. Networked media hubs like Roku boxes and smartphones were a close race, though they have a smaller viewing audience as a whole.

Posted in Set Top Boxes by Reuben Drake on June 28th, 2011

The Hauppauge Digital Broadway Box is not what it sounds like. This isn’t a box full of musicals and Broadway shows. It’s a new way to watch live TV on your iPhone and iPad (as well as other mobile devices). It’s basically a small stand alone box that connects to any TV signal and streams live TV wirelessly to mobile devices like your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.

Live TV can be watched over your home Wi-Fi network or it can be streamed over the Internet anywhere in the world as long as you have an Internet connection. It will arrive in July or early August for $199.

Konect USB watch concept

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on March 8th, 2011

We’ve seen our share of unique watches. We thought we had seen it all in fact, but nope, there was at least one more. Artist Olivier Demange created this timepiece concept called Konect, which has a wide range of features and looks futuristic.

It sports a Bluetooth radio that acts as a receiver, controls for music playback, a button to answer and end calls, a removable USB stick, and yes it also tells the time. We just aren’t sure how yet. Still, it looks awesome and we hope to be wearing one soon.

Obaku V140G is the world’s thinnest sports watch

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on February 20th, 2011

We’ve seen all kinds of watches here at the Brick, some packed with awesome features. But it seems like the more features you add, the more it weighs your wrist down. That isn’t fun at all. It’s nice when a watch is light and thin. The Obaku 7140G claims to be the slimmest sports watch ever. It certainly looks like that’s true.

Being slim and light is exactly what you want in a sports watch when you are running or playing in a tennis match. Ideally you want something that you don’t even know you are wearing. The design is even sleek and stylish in black.

Haptica Braille watch for the blind

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on February 5th, 2011

Blind people need better watches to read the time. They have analog watches that require them to feel the bumps around the watch, but that is time consuming and inaccurate. Digital watches that read the time out loud are accurate, but not when there is noise around you.

Well, David Chavez created a Braille “digital” watch. The watch has a display for 4 different digits, allowing users to feel the bumps on the watch to get the time quickly and accurately. Thing is, David doesn’t have the funds to kick start the watch into production, so he is crowdsourcing the start up funds on Kickstarter.com. If you think the watch deserves the funding it needs, go to the Kickstarter website for more details and to make a donation.

HorodronHD-01 concept watch with E-Ink display

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on January 13th, 2011

Sure you have many great watches to choose from these days, but what you want is something that will make you stand out from the crowd. Something like this HorodronHD-01 concept watch for instance.

Instead of an analog display, it features an E-Ink display that tells the time and also shows the date. But mostly it just looks cool and retro while also looking futuristic. We love the clean design.

Solaris V1 Solar-powered LED watch

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on January 13th, 2011

Everybody wants to be green these days, so cell batteries are a dying breed. More watches are being powered by the sun. And now a French designer has come up with an elegant solar watch design that features the solar panel right in the middle of the watch. It looks great.

The time is displayed by LEDs, with the hours on the outside in blue, while five-minute groups are shown in purple. Single minutes are displayed on the cross bars in the center.

Tokyoflash Kisai Console watch

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on January 12th, 2011

Tokyoflash has unveiled the Kisai Console watch, which looks pretty darn cool. This futuristic watch will cost you $200.64. As usual, you might have a hard time actually reading the time on this watch though. Hopefully it gets easier once you know how.

The hours are displayed on the numbers on the top half, while the minutes are shown on the middle and lower section. Who cares. You buy these watches because they look great, not because you want the time.

Swap Rebel USB Phone Watch, with GPS and Touch Screen Display

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on December 9th, 2010

Most people use their phones as a watch these days, but not as many use their watch as a phone. This is changing as watches can do more. The sWaP Rebel is first and foremost a watch. One that has cellphone functionality, a touchscreen color display, a built-in camera, FM radio and Bluetooth connectivity among other features.

The price isn’t too bad at £190 and you can choose from black, pink, orange, white and green colors, but it won’t replace your primary handset. It’s always nice to see watches doing more and more though.

Tokyoflash Kisai RPM watch

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on November 27th, 2010

Tokyoflash has released its latest watch design, the Kisai RPM. This is the first concept to become a reality from the Tokyoflash Design Studio Blog and it is based on an idea from a Tokyoflash fan from the UK, James Fursedon.

The Tokyoflash Kisai RPM is easy to read, unlike some of their watches. The hours are shown on the inner ring, while five minute intervals are shown on the outer ring. Four single minutes are positioned at the top of the display along side the AM/PM indicator. Lights showing the current time will flash for several seconds to make it easier to read.

Tron inspired LED Watch from Tokyoflash

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on October 20th, 2010

The guys over at Tokyoflash never stop designing cool new watches. The latest one is part of their concept series, and it was designed by Scott from the UK. And we hope they put this one into production very soon, since it looks awesome.

The two rings (based on a Tron Disc) represent the minutes and the hours. The break in the ring represents the time in a normal clock face layout. We hope that they make this tron inspired LED watch asap.
