Android Market to hit Google TV sets in March or April?

Posted in Google by Conner Flynn on January 22nd, 2011

While Google TV has had it share of challenges, Google isn’t giving up. They are moving forward on the platform in a big way if rumors are accurate. Now rumor has it that Google is adding a filtration system into the Android Market that will prevent users of non-touchscreen devices from viewing apps that require a touchscreen.

That would be very useful if the Android Market arrives on Google TV, since you wouldn’t want to sort through apps that don’t work on your device. The rumor is that Android Market for Google TV is expected to arrive very soon. In March or April specifically.

Details on Vizio’s Android-based tablet, smartphone

Posted in Tablet PC by Conner Flynn on January 2nd, 2011

Earlier today Vizio confirmed many of the details of its Rose Bowl tablet teaser. The company is getting into mobile devices and will use Android for the Via Tablet, an eight-incher with a front camera, three speakers and Wi-Fi for Internet access. There will also be a matching Via Phone which sports a four-inch display, a back five-megapixel camera and its own front camera.

We still don’t have many hardware details, but the company promised a ‘blessed’ version of Android with support for the Market. The devices won’t ship until sometime this summer, so the tablet will likely use Honeycomb (Android 2.4) or later. One carrier has been lined already but is unidentified.

Vizio uses Rose Bowl to tease upcoming tablet

Posted in Tablet PC by Conner Flynn on January 2nd, 2011

Vizio has used this year’s Rose Bowl to tease the company’s upcoming tablet device. The company is known for their LCD TV’s, not tablets. Vizio chief sales officer Randy Waynick demonstrates the device in a message that aired during the half-time break.

He also talks about Vizio’s desire to create products that deliver “entertainment freedom for all,” and the ability to view games on their LCD TVs or “any of their great new products, from anywhere”. In the spot, the tablet appears to stream match content directly to the device. Video below.

OnLive CEO dismisses plans to take on Netflix

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on December 9th, 2010

Word on the street was that OnLive would be getting into the streaming movie business. And why not? They are a streaming gaming service. However, the CEO of OnLive, Steven Perlman, has come out and said that the company is not aiming to compete with Netflix.

That’s good news for those who are buying the service. The company needs to focus on games and bolster up their somewhat meager games selection. It’s smart to just focus on games, at least for now.

OnLive and Vizio may start movie subscription services

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on December 6th, 2010

Cloud gaming service OnLive and TV maker Vizio are discussing separate deals for subscription movie services of their own. OnLive is apparently committed to expanding to movies via subscriptions to go with their video games. Vizio is believed to be in talks for content.

This is an interesting move for Vizio since it already has access to Netflix and Vudu. It will be interesting to see what happens with both companies. Can Onlive compete with Netflix? Will Netflix have to get into gaming? Stay tuned.

There’s no official confirmation from either company yet, but Toshiba’s American GM has been quoted saying that Google is a key partner on the PC side and will likely be a key partner on the TV side as well. Stay tuned.

Vudu drops some rentals to $2 to fight Apple, Netflix

Posted in Set Top Boxes by Conner Flynn on October 18th, 2010

Vudu just has started an aggressive campaign to corner the movie rental space through its pricing strategy – lowering the price to below average. What this means to you is just $2 for around 4,000 “top films” in the company’s Movies On Sale section, where you have 48 hours to finish watching once playback begins.

The deal is good until the end of 2010. Lower prices should apply both to those who still use a Vudu Box as well as the TVs and Blu-ray players that have streaming support, like those from LG, Samsung and Vizio.
