DROID 3 gets Bluetooth certification

Posted in Motorola by Conner Flynn on April 14th, 2011

Looks like Bluetooth certification for the Motorola DROID 3 may have been approved, assuming that the phone is known by its codename, the Solana XT862. It makes sense since the previous DROID models followed a different model number scheme of A855 (DROID) and A955 (DROID 2) and it comes from a reliable source.

If the D3 is the XT862, then it did in fact receive its Bluetooth certification yesterday, so hopefully it’ll be arriving before too long. That revamped keyboard, qHD screen, and new metal and black look sure are sweet.

According to insiders, Logitech has suddenly frozen shipments of its Revue box for over a month while waiting for a major Google TV revamp. Production would apparently resume in February or March.

Why they would halt production for up to two months without a change in hardware is unknown.

A few weeks back Microsoft was sending out invites, inviting folks to participate in the Kinect Beta Program. Well, users are reporting that they are participating in the program, and pictures have been circulating showing the Kinect-enabled dashboard update on consoles.

Virgin Mobile to have $40 true unlimited data plan

Posted in Virgin by Conner Flynn on August 22nd, 2010

This weekend Virgin Mobile confirmed a major revamp of its Broadband2Go data plans that could see a return to real unlimited data. Instead of the four plans offered today, it would simplify everything to just a $40 unlimited monthly plan and a $10, 100MB 10-day plan.

A leaked memo suggests that the changes will go live on August 24. Both MiFi routers and modems should work with the cap-free access. This sure would heat up the competition among carriers for mobile data. Clear and Virgin’s US parent Sprint offer unlimited Internet, but only for their WiMAX services.

Samsung Wave shipping in the US, $499 unlocked

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on July 4th, 2010

Holy crap. What’s with that model’s eyes? She looks like she is about to sprout vampire teeth and drink my blood. Probably without even having hot vampire sex with me. Would you buy a phone from her? It’s creepy. It’s like I’m being threatened to buy or else her and her husband, the Joker will have their way with me while Batman watches.

Anyway, the Samsung Wave has already hit the UK last month, but folks in the US have yet to get their hands on it. Now Amazon is offering the smartphone to US customers for $440 without a contract commitment.

Major WebOS developer leaves Palm for Apple

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on June 9th, 2010

The iPhone is on a completely different level from the Palm Pre in terms of popularity and sales. Still, there are a few things that I don’t like about the iPhone that the Pre does better. The most obvious is the way webOS handles notifications that let you keep working while the iPhone makes you stop and tend to the notification.

The man who designed the notification system in webOS has left Palm and landed at Apple. We can only hope that his first job will be to revamp the notification system the iPhone uses into something that works better.

This comes from the good folks over at Chinavasion. There’s a camcorder hidden inside. They call it “Ingenious and fashionable”. Comes with 4GB internal memory and can likely burn vampires like a standard cross.

LED light bulbs are under $20 at Home Depot

Posted in Green Gadget by Shane McGlaun on May 11th, 2010

There are many ways for geeks to go green. You can get a surge protector that lets you turn your gear off when not in use to prevent vampire power for instance. You can also move to LED backlit monitors and notebooks.

One thing that you can do in your entire home is go to LED light bulbs. LED bulbs consumer a lot less power, but they are typically really expensive. I have seen some that are $50 or more each. Home Depot has a new line of LED bulbs that fit normal fixtures called EcoSmart.

Posted in USB by Conner Flynn on May 1st, 2010

Having anti-virus software on your computer is essential. You also have to worry about getting a virus on your removable storage nowadays too, so designers have come up with this U+ USB Hub concept.

It’s a USB hub in the shape of a cross, that offers an antivirus scanner, allowing you to scan your flash drives, ensuring that the infection doesn’t spread from there. It should also keep you safe from vampires and demons.

iPads reportedly overheating in the sun

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on April 6th, 2010

The iPad may be a bit of a vampire. While it’s reflection will show up in mirrors, it tends to want to avoid the sun and come out and play at night. Apparently, many users are reporting that their iPads are giving a warning stating “iPad needs to cool down before you can use it”.

According to Apple, the operational temperature of the iPad is 32° to 95° F when on, and the nonoperational temperature is -4° to 113° F. Sounds reasonable. But one user received this warning outside of NYC, where it hasn’t been much hotter than 70° or so.

Green Zero Charger from AT&T drives stake through vampire power’s heart

Posted in AT&T by Shane McGlaun on March 18th, 2010

The power used by devices that we think are turned off goes by several names. Some call it parasitic power, some call it vampire power, and others call it phantom power. In the end, they are all the same and describe electricity consumed by devices when they are not in use.

AT&T has a new green charger coming in May called the Zero Charger that will stop phantom power use at a place most of us don’t even think about it — your cell phone charger. AT&T says that most chargers draw power from the outlet even when a phone isn’t attached.
