Posted in Notebooks by Conner Flynn on December 5th, 2010

Hey look at this. A Dell Inspiron Duo knockoff. Naturally it’s smaller in size and less powerful than the real deal. The Dell Inspiron Duo has one big feature going for it that we had never seen before. That’s why it wowed most of us. And that’s why the knockoff makers didn’t waste any time with this design.

But as usual, they don’t get that we want good specs, even in a knockoff. It’s powered by an Intel Atom N450 processor with GMA 3150 graphics, includes 1GB of RAM, a 120GB hard drive, swiveling 8.9-inch capacitive touchscreen (1024 X 600), two USB ports, an SD card slot, LAN port, VGA output, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a 2 megapixel webcam.

Flix on Stix video-rental kiosks would replace DVDs with USB drives

Posted in movies by Conner Flynn on December 4th, 2010

Flix on Stix is looking to take on Redbox by making DVD rentals available on USB memory drives. Flix on Stix would allow renters to either rent at a Flix on Stix kiosk with their own memory drive or get one from the kiosk. The company is hoping to start service within the next several months and they plan to grow to 20,000 kiosks in a year.

The touchscreen kiosk will let users select the movie, pay with a credit card, and then insert their own or get a provided USB drive for their rental. The company says that USB 3.0 drives can take as little as 14 seconds for transferring the file and USB 1.0 drives can take as long as 6 minutes. Pricing varies by the number of days you want to rent, and after the rental period expires the video will delete itself.

3.5-inch floppy turned into a USB flash drive

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on November 15th, 2010

Remember when 3.5-inch floppy disks were cutting edge? They were tougher than their 5.25-inch predecessors and could hold more data. That was a long time ago. There isn’t much use for them nowadays. Or is there?

This 3.5-inch floppy disk looks normal on the outside, but inside, it holds a USB connector and flash memory. This hack requires a couple of disks that have been cut apart and stacked together, so that the connector can be placed inside.
