We like geek cakes ’round these parts, as evidenced by our not one, but two compilations of geek cakes. But if you want a custom cake from a bakery, you better be specific about what it is that you want. Otherwise you end up with cake fail.

So check out this funny incident. Some guy orders a custom cake and asked that a photo of a friend be integrated into the decoration. Simple enough right? So he delivers the photo as a .JPG on a Lexar Jumpdrive Trio flash drive. And look what ended up on the cake.

Samsung introduced today for those in small and home offices a new mono-laser multi-functional printer. It is called the SCX-4826FN and it prices around $430.

The Samsung SCX-4826FN is a four-in-one product which offers print, copy, scan and fax features in a compact footprint. It is designed with a LED display that offers quick access to a variety of functions. Samsung says it is available now.

Toshiba just added four more 15.4-inch widescreen Satellite Pro S300 series notebooks to it’s line. Both the S300-EZ1511 and S300-EZ1512 feature an Intel Pentium T3400 processor, 1GB memory, and a 120GB hard drive. Selling for $529, the S300-EZ1511 features integrated GMA 4500M graphics and Vista Home Basic, while the S300-EZ1512 is selling for $579 with GMA 4500MHD graphics and Vista Business.

The S300-EZ1513 will run you $649 and sports an Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 processor, 160GB hard disk storage, 1GB memory and GMA 4500MHD graphics. The last model, the S300-EZ1514, has a Core 2 Duo T6570 processor, 2GB of memory, GMA 4500MHD graphics and a 160GB hard drive. This one will run you $699.

Iomega kicked out a couple of new portable hard drives last month, one of which being the rugged 250GB eGo BlackBelt that we’re taking a look at today. The most stand-out feature we found in the BlackBelt was its Drop Guard Xtreme, allowing the portable drive to take a hit to the pavement from as much as 7 feet in the air and keep on ticking.

This ability to take a long drop is largely due to the black rubber “belt” that envelopes the drive (mostly the corners) protecting it from all angles of impact. The rubber belt is not adhered to the drive so it can be removed if you would like, and your left with a smooth, flat-black flask-shaped chasis that’s maybe a little to big for a pants pocket but will easily fit into the pocket of a jacket.

When you first get your DVR from the cable or satellite provider its 10 or 20 hours of recording time sounds like an eternity. Then you quickly realize that you can’t get your full season of Oprah and The Price is Right without running out of room for necessities like Celebrity Rehab.

Apricorn has announced a new DVR expander called (wait for it) the DVR Xpander that offers 1.5TB of storage space. With that much storage, you can record 843 hours of SD programs or 187.5 hours of HD programs. Surprisingly the price for the 1.5TB version isn’t even that high at $239.

Seagate recently introduced a new home media player designed to work with its FreeAgent Go portable hard drives. The new FreeAgent Theater HD media player will be available in March for around $130 standalone, or it can be paired with one of several Seagate FreeAgent Go drives for varying prices.

The FreeAgent Theater is designed to let one enjoy media content stored on the FreeAgent Go drive via a home entertainment system. The FreeAgent Theater media player supports MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 formats, and DIVX files with video resolutions for NTSC, PAL and HD up to 1080i. The audio formats supported include 5.1 channel surround sound, where available, and also plays the popular digital audio formats including: MP3, WMA, WAV and OGG.

It’s been awhile since we’ve seen a good car mod. The last one was an Xbox 360 modded into a Suzuki. Now, thanks to some crazy Ruskie hacker, an Eee PC gets crammed into an automobile dashboard. He’s posted an article showing how to take a 7 inch Eee PC apart and turn it into a carputer that hooks into an auto stereo system and it even acts as a graphic equalizer.

The finished product is a computer in your car with 1GB of RAM, 4GB of built in storage plus an 8GB SDHC card, a 7 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display, Bluetooth, a slot-loading DVD-RW drive, GPS, 5.1 channel audio, a touschreen, and a boatload of USB adapters that string the whole thing together.

The memory products folks over at Lexar kicked out two new USB flash drives last week which feature some different design touches. One is the JumpDrive TwistTurn and the other is the JumpDrive Retrax. Both will be available in March 2009.

The JumpDrive Retrax USB flash drive features a capless design with a retractable mechanism that designed to protect the drive and its contents. The TwistTurn USB flash drive, meanwhile, features a capless design of its own, with a rotating case cap that attaches to a keychain or backpack.

A stylish new JVC home theater system is coming in May for around $600 that will fit the need of urban loft dwellers. It is called the NX-T10.

The NX-T10 is a 2.1 channel system which can be hung on a wall or placed on a table. It consists of a low-profile main unit, two compact omni-directional main speakers and a powered subwoofer. The speakers can be hung on the wall as well.

Asus has introduced their latest high-end gaming notebook at CES. Known as the ASUS W90, the laptop provides a 18.4- or 17-inch display, depending on model with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 or HD 3850 X2 dual graphics, or a single NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GS GPU, and the Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

The W90 uses the Intel X38 chipset and has three SO-DIMM slots for up to 6GB of DDR2 memory. Some other neat features include up to 1 terabyte of hard drive storage space using two HDDs, DVD burner or Blu-ray optical drive, six built-in Altec Lansing surround sound speakers, optional TV tuner, AI Touch Media, a 2MP webcam, 802.11 Draft N wireless, Bluetooth, Gigabit Ethernet LAN, and a 56k modem just for good measure.

LaCie, a maker of rather cool external hard drives, unveiled another one of this sort today in the form of a stylish media unit. It is called the LaCinema Classic and a 500GB version of it retails for around $170.

The LaCie LaCinema Classic is designed to hang out in the media room. Its black and sleek casing is designed by Neil Poulton, known for other LaCie drives. It connects to a HDTV system via HDMI output and works with numerous video, music, and photo formats, including MPEG4, MP3 and JPEG as well as HD-JPEG.
