PlayStation Move and a turntable used to track the Earth’s rotation

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on February 21st, 2011

Fancy yourself an amateur scientist? Do you want to track the Earth’s rotation from your home? Well, if you have a few simple tools, you can do just that. The device above is called Copernitron and features a PlayStation Move controller, a turntable, and a homebrew Helmholtz coil which cancels out interference caused by our planet’s magnetic field.

It sends data to a Linux PC via Bluetooth and measures the Earth’s rotation, locates geographic north, and determines altitude. This is achieved by measuring the controller’s movements as it spins around at 45 RPM.

Posted in Turntables by Shane McGlaun on September 16th, 2010

I remember the old vinyl records that my parents had around the house as a kid. I had a few records when I was young too. I once left my copy of Funky Town in the sun only to find it melted and warped later. If you have a bunch of old records you want to listen to on the go or make into digital tracks Crosley has a new turntable for you.

The turntable is called the CR6002A and is a small and portable device that leaves the edges of the record uncovered. The device supports both 33 1/3 and 45-RPM records and has an integrated FM transmitter.

Denon celebrates 100th birthday with this amazing Turntable

Posted in Turntables by Conner Flynn on August 23rd, 2010

To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Denon has debuted a line of celebratory gear, which includes this beautiful direct drive turntable. The DP-A100 uses the same high-torque motor Denon developed in 1970, in sexy glossy black and gold.

We hear ya. Yes direct-drive turntables can suffer from the motor transmitting vibrations to the record, but not to fear, Denon gets around this by applying a dampening silicon rubber to the underside of the aluminum platter.

UniSon MK II turntable for $27,800

Posted in Turntables by Conner Flynn on March 29th, 2010

A turntable for $27,800? It better come with some gold records and a diamond needle. The UniSon MK II turntable by DaVinci Audio Labs may not be decked out in gold, but it does have a seriously stable drive chassis and silent bearings, which means zero noise or vibration from the turntable itself.

We don’t have a good answer as to why it costs so much. We can only assume that DaVinci is working out of a whole different economy than we are. Maybe they just want to sell a few and then roll around in money.

Posted in Activision by Shane McGlaun on March 24th, 2010

I like me some music games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Rap and dance music isn’t my genre of choice so I have not had the need to play DJ Hero yet. If you like DJ Hero Activision has announced that stand-alone DJ controllers are finally available in the US.

The controllers are on Amazon now for about $60. When you add a second controller, you can have head-to-head DJ battles against friends. Activision is also talking up a couple more multiplayer modes that are pretty cool.

Under the hood there’s a Core i7 processor, NVIDIA GeForce GT 334M graphics, support for up to 1280GB of storage (with dual drives), a slot-in Blu-ray drive and USB 3.0.

Audio records made from glacier ice

Posted in music by Conner Flynn on December 7th, 2009

Audio records made from glacier iceRemember that James Bond movie with the Ice hotel? The entire hotel was sculpted out of Ice and it’s for real too. Everything in the hotel is completely usable. Similarly, artist Katie Paterson taken the idea and made recordings of 3 glaciers (the Langjökull, Snæfellsjökull and Solheimajökull) of Iceland.

She pressed them into three records that were cast and frozen with the melt water from each of the glaciers. When the time came, the records were played on three separate turntables non-stop until they melted. The process took only 2 hours.

The new turntable is called the AT-LP2D-USB and it connects to a computer via USB. The turntable has an aluminum platter, Dual Magnet stereo cartridge with replaceable stylus, and a tone arm with damping control.
