PlayStation Vita hits the FCC

Posted in PS Vita by Reuben Drake on August 3rd, 2011

Sony’s highly anticipated PlayStation Vita has finally arrived at the FCC for wireless testing and approval. The Commission’s test documents do not shed any new light on features, but the approval suggests the company is on schedule to launch the device in time for the holiday season.

Rumors have the Vita hitting stores this fall. There is an ad supposedly from Blockbuster UK that points to an October 28 date as well.

iPhone 5 could be a bigger upgrade than expected

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on August 2nd, 2011

The iPhone upgrade coming this fall “could be a bigger upgrade than we expected,” according to Sterne Agee’s Shaw Wu. The analyst cites Apple’s supply chain, which indicates that the new model will feature a display “slightly larger” than the 3.5-inch size Apple has used since the first iPhone. That would be great news.

He says that the phone should “retain a similar form factor and size but with thinner bezel,”. The info suggests a 2011 iPhone will in all likelihood forego 4G (LTE). And problems are said to remain with battery life and “spotty” network coverage. Of course Apple is good at tackling problems like this.

According to Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata, the company is planning to implement paid downloads for both the 3DS and Wii U. Iwata said that developers will have access to the system for the 3DS by the end of the year and he said Nintendo was thinking about extending the life of some games by making new levels available.

Iwata said that Nintendo will not support low quality content either, as in unlocking keys or stat increases. Don’t worry though, he also seemed to indicate that free games won’t have added chargeable content later.

Incubot 2GB USB flash drive

Posted in USB Flash Drives by Conner Flynn on August 1st, 2011

Like most disasters, the tsunami and earthquake have faded from the headlines and so faded from people’s thoughts. Just because it isn’t the top headline doesn’t mean those folks are just fine now. They still need aid.

Incubot, in conjunction with World Events Productions and CustomUSB, have created a line of Japan Relief custom 2G USB drives. These are limited edition, fully licensed, and in colors that honor the japanese flag. The best part is that 100% of profits go to Japanese Red Cross Society and to Safecast radiation monitoring efforts.

Electronic Rock Guitar Bag Plays Music

Posted in Apparel by Reuben Drake on July 28th, 2011

Most bags just hold stuff and that’s it. They do their job and nothing more. Well, ThinkGeek has a new offering that puts a playable instrument on it. It’s called the Electronic Rock Guitar Bag. The name says it all. This bag plays music.

The music plays through a little amplifier that you can hang on the front of the bag. How cool is that? The guitar is played by swiping your thumb across the strings on the bottom and you can make real chords on the neck. The bag has room for up to a 17-inch laptop and has two large pockets and six small pockets with a zippered phone pouch.

Netflix dominates iPad and consoles, Hulu dominates PCs

Posted in Netflix by Reuben Drake on July 27th, 2011

Netflix and Hulu dominate entirely separate sectors of digital streaming, according to a Nielsen study. Both are now available on many platforms, but Netflix is the dominant one on non-PCs, including iPads, game consoles, and media hubs, ranging from a three-to-one ratio on Apple’s tablet to seven or eight times higher.

Hulu isn’t a lame duck though. They win on computers, often by a wide margin, with 89 percent of its viewers watching on a computer versus just 42 percent of Netflix owners wanting to do the same. Networked media hubs like Roku boxes and smartphones were a close race, though they have a smaller viewing audience as a whole.

Netflix brings CBS to more countries, Mad Men to US

Posted in Netflix by Reuben Drake on July 27th, 2011

Still upset about the Netflix price hike? Well, maybe this will help. They are busy trying to get more content. Netflix has reached an agreement with CBS Corp. that will allow some of the network’s programming to be streamed to foreign markets. The deal includes CBS shows like “Californication,” “Dexter,” “Numb3rs” and “Twin Peaks.”

Many of the networks’ most popular series are excluded of course. Netflix operates in Canada and is expanding to 43 countries in Latin America, with other foreign markets coming soon. Netflix has also added “Mad Men” to its streaming option. Starting today, the first four seasons of the show are available to Netflix’s US customers.

Motorola Defy+ rumored for AT&T

Posted in Motorola by Reuben Drake on July 21st, 2011

Word is that a slightly upgraded version of Motorola’s Defy Android smartphone may soon arrive at AT&T. If this rumor turns out to be accurate, the handset will get support for 850MHz, 1,900MHz and 2,100MHz HSPA bands, which are used by AT&T and some Canadian carriers.

Differences from the original device are said to include a 1GHz OMAP 3620 processor instead of the 800MHz CPU, and Android 2.3.3. Aside from that, RAM, storage space, camera specs and the 3.7-inch display should remain the same.

Western Digital ships slim 1TB Scorpio Blue drive

Posted in Western Digital by Reuben Drake on July 20th, 2011

Need a high capacity hard drive? Well, lucky you, Western Digital has shipped its first 1TB notebook drive thin enough to fit most portable notebooks. The upgraded Scorpio Blue measures 9.5mm tall and is thin enough that a MacBook Pro or most other thinner notebooks can take it with ease.

They achieved the slimness through fitting 500GB per platter and cutting out the third platter. You can buy the drive for $139 at resellers. We aren’t sure when it will come from PC builders.

Samsung distances itself from Anymode Smart Case

Posted in Samsung by Reuben Drake on July 19th, 2011

Samsung has issued an unusual statement in response to the launch of a third-party iPad Smart Cover made for its Galaxy Tab 10.1. In the statement Samsung has denied any involvement with Anymode stating that the company used its branding without its permission, and they want to make sure that everyone knows that they distance themselves from the imitation of what is a patented Apple design.

Samsung doesn’t need to be fighting a war on another front since they are currently in the middle of a serious ITC patent infringement dispute with Apple already.

Netflix for Nintendo 3DS now streaming

Posted in Netflix by Conner Flynn on July 14th, 2011

Right on schedule, this morning Netflix for 3DS owners is now available. The app gives the game system access to the entire catalog as long as you have a streaming-enabled plan. Bookmarking works and lets users resume on the 3DS or even another device.

Obviously videos on Netflix are in 2D. We doubt that Netflix will start adding 3D anytime soon. The app is free to download from the Nintendo eShop. With the new price structure streaming is $8, but costs $16 for those who also want unlimited DVDs as well.

Anonymous posts 90,000 military e-mail accounts

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on July 11th, 2011

Looks like anonymous is not finished with its hacking just yet. They are claiming responsibility for an attack that targeted US military contractor Booz Allen Hamilton. The group reportedly posted e-mail accounts from 90,000 military personnel who were associated with the consulting company.

Along with the email accounts, the hackers allegedly posted 4GB of source code from the company’s servers, along with “some related data on different servers we got access to,”. The company was said to have been targeted due to their alleged role in the SWIFT surveillance program.
