Steampunk blunderbuss actually fires

Posted in Weapons by Conner Flynn on February 7th, 2010

We’ve covered many steampunk mods around these parts. Some are actually Steampunk while others are just a lot of brass attachments glued onto a gadget. Well this one is Steampunk alright. And these guns actually fire.

The blunderbuss shown above shoots not bullets, but rubber balls. That doesn’t mean it won’t hurt like a real bullet though. It shoots those rubber balls fast enough to actually penetrate cardboard from a distance. Ouch! And while we don’t want to be on the wrong end of this thing, we can’t help admiring the craftsmanship. Steampunk Urinal

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on October 14th, 2009

Sometimes Steampunk goes too far. Cakes, flash drives and clocks are all well and good but with the arrival of a Steampunk urinal, it seems like this genre has officially jumped the shark.

Technically it’s called the TeslaPunk Urinal. A hand-made solid oak tank with a battery powered flush pump, laser aiming assist, lights, antique gauges, flush capacitor, and cup holder. Yeah, what else can you say about this thing. I think it’s time that we changed the way we use the word Steampunk.

$3,000 Steampunk USB flash drive

$3,000 Steampunk USB flash driveWe love Steampunk around here. We’ve certainly featured our share of steampunk gadgets. And this USB drive is another pretty nice example of the art form, but it’s insanely priced at $3000. I would pay maybe $100 for this flash drive. Maybe $300 if I had some disposable money.

It has some great detail work and looks pretty awesome, so it’s a shame that it’s priced so high that no one will own it. Could be a typo, but somehow I doubt it. Now the Steampunk phone from Russia. That I could pay handsomely for.

Steampunk USB flash drive

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on August 9th, 2009

Steampunk USB flash driveThis Steampunk USB Flash Drive looks a little more authentic than some others. This one was created by a Russian modder, using some cogs, screws and a brass pipe.

You can easily picture this one attached to a victorian laptop, had they had such things. You can load your plans for all of your Steampunk creations on this drive and keep them safe in style. If you think you have the skill and want to make your own flash drive with a similar look, full instructions are available at English Russia.

Vacuum Tube flash drive

Vacuum Tube flash driveVacuum tubes powered a whole bunch of gadgets in the past. They even continue to show up in or on our gadgets today. So what could be cooler than a Vacuum tube flash drive? Thanks to the folks at CF14 Industries we now have real Vacuum Tube Flash Drives.

It took some trial and error, but at last they got the interior of a 512MB thumb drive inside of a vacuum tube. The end result looks pretty awesome and should make your laptop look a bit more steampunk. Hit the link and see if you’d like to try it yourself.

Arduinocaster MIDI keytar

Posted in Musical Instruments by Conner Flynn on March 25th, 2009

Future guitarInstrument-mods are nothing new around here. We got your Steampunk, your equipment that measures how hard you rock, even a guitar that plays Atari games. All pretty cool.

But the Arduinocaster has a unique look that separates it from the pack. It’s an Arduino-based MIDI instrument that uses switches and LEDs to control the “strings,” and an opto reflective switch for strumming. Check it out in the video below.

Homemade Steampunk lamp

Posted in Lamps by Conner Flynn on February 26th, 2009

Homemade Steampunk lampThis Steampunk lamp would be right at home lighting up the desk of a 19th century mad scientist. It’s basic, simple and unlike some Steampunk creations, isn’t overdone and overly thought out. Creator Michael Pusateri made it from an old wooden cigar box, two 60 watt bulbs, a handful of copper wire.

He admits that he got “a little fancy” and painted the ceramic mounts with textured copper paint. And he acknowledges that he could have thrown much more steampunk at the thing, but likes the simplicity. Check out a video below.

Steampunk usb memory is flashy

Steampunk usb memory is flashy
If Flash Gordon had a laptop, this would be his preferred USB memory. It’s the creation of a crazy modder over in Russia and it’s full of retro steampunk shininess, hand crafted from polished brass and copper, with a lot of attention to detail. He got all of it just right.

Which makes me wonder why no company has yet taken advantage of the whole steampunk thing and started mass producing usb memory like this. They could move a ton of items. Geeks like me would eat it up. I shouldn’t have to rely on a modder from Russia for my usb needs, that’s all I’m saying.
