Say supercomputer to most people and they think of the massive machines that take up entire rooms at colleges and laboratories around the country. The sort of computers that have massive power and consumer as much electricity as a mall.

SGI has announced a new computer that is the first in what it calls its line of personal supercomputers. The machine is a high-performance desk side cluster. Despite the machines high-performance it takes up the same amount of space as your average workstation.

Buffalo’s latest MiniStation DataVault delivers 500GB of storage space, but unlike other solutions, this model features automatic full disk encryption and a rugged shock-resistant design so that all of your data will be safe and sound.

This one will cost you $244, is USB-powered and will be available this month in Japan. Chances are pretty good that we will see this one in other parts of the world soon after.

There are all sorts of reasons you might want to send someone a message. You may want to tell that special someone just how much you care; you may want to announce the birth of a child or some other special occasion. You could send a card or you could send the message into space on a laser beam (insert Dr. Evil laugh here).

A company called Sentforever.com is offering to send messages into space for free in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the moon landings. The messages are transmitted with a laser beam at 670 million miles an hour into deep space.

Convergence is a great thing in the gadgets we know and love today. For instance the iPhone is a great converged device that can replace a GPS system, phone, MID, and MP3 player with one device. Convergence is usually associated with technology products, but not always.

A converged refrigerator is now being offered by a company aptly called MicroFridge. The device combines four things that the average college geek needs to make life livable. In one device you get a fridge, freezer, microwave, and a charging station for your gadgets.

Dell is getting ready to release three new T-series workstations: the T3500, T5500, and T7500. You’ll get up to 1.5TB of storage space, an eSATA port, DisplayPort connectors and they’re EnergyStar compliant.

The T3500 that will support up to 24GB RAM. The T5500 offers a RAM capacity of up to 72GB. Dual sport sockets will be included so you can use dual Intel Xeons. The T7500 supports a hefty 192GB of RAM running at 1,066MHz or 1,333MHz. This model also features dual native Gen 2 PCIe graphics card slots with support for NVIDIA SLI.

We love video games around here. Whether we’re playing the Xbox 360, the PS3 or even an old Atari 2600. We thought we would take a look at the history of gaming consoles from 1972 to the present. You grew up with the vintage consoles, you play the new ones, so take a walk down memory lane and revisit all your favorites from the massive list below.

This year’s CES will see Blaupunkt and miRoamer put Internet radio into car dashboards for the first time. According to miRoamer founder and CEO George Parthimos, “miRoamer’s development with Blaupunkt is the first seamless Internet radio solution. With the simple push of a button, users can access AM/FM stations or Internet radio’s thousands of music, entertainment, news and talk stations from around the world, all from the same car stereo.”

The first model will connect to a 3G/HSDPA/HSPA device via Bluetooth for Internet connectivity. When connecting to the Internet from an external device (Like an iPhone), the customer’s existing service provider is the default network. They have various models in the pipeline which may have their own internal modem.

Hampton Grills has pulled out all the stops with this grill that resembles a moisture evaporator on the planet Tatooine. It unfolds into three separate grilling stations, each with their own individual temperature controls.

You can do it all with this one whether you grill, steam, smoke or grill, rotisserie, stir fri etc. It all can be done on this one grill. The whole unit folds up at the push of a button, which is pretty damn spiffy. The grill also features nearly 1200 square inches of primary cooking space on three independent grill stations. It will cost you though. The Hampton Grill is priced at $4,000.

The good news is that the PSP-3000 has a new brighter screen that gets rid of a lot of the older PSP’s ghosting, but the bad news is that there’s a price to pay. Some PSP owners are reporting at the official PlayStation forums that their PSP-3000 suffers from really bad interlacing defects during video playback AND gaming. That means that there are nasty visible jagged edges and scanlines on anything that’s moving. According to Joystiq, turning off the Wide Color Space option helps. We can only assume that Sony is in the process of investigating the problem.

Here’s an innovative way to furnish your space while keeping things minimal when not in use. The Kenchikukagu is designed for work, sleep and eating. Designed by Atelier OPA from Japan, the Kenchikukagu series includes a mobile work station, mobile bed and a mobile kitchen. You can actually order this on Amazon Japan for 800,000 Yen (about $7,500).

Closed, these pieces look like simple storage, but when opened they turn into useful furniture. Perfect for small living spaces and those who just like to play with their furniture. This kind of furniture also makes moving much easier since I’m sure it’s a breeze to fit through doorways.

One of the cool devices that HP was showing off back at CES in January was its MediaSmart Connect device. With the MediaSmart Connect HP is set to take on other streaming media devices like the Netflix Player and the Apple TV.

HP announced today that the MediaSmart Connect is now available for pre-order at a price of $349. The device will be available to pre-order starting today on Amazon.com, Best Buy, Circuit City, and at Newegg.com. Included with the device is an HDMI cable and learning remote that can operate four additional devices as well as a $20 CinemaNow certificate.

According to the Space Adventures tourism company out of Virginia, Sergy Brin, cofounder of Google, has put a $5 million deposit down for a vacation in space aboard a Russian spacecraft. The total trip will cost $35 million dollars and the launch date is scheduled for sometime in 2011.

Brin joins a small number of elite individuals who have both the desire to travel into space and more importantly the deep pockets to make it happen. Richard Garriott’s trip with Space Adventures is still coming up this fall. Brin’s $5 million deposit also makes him the founding member of a new Space Adventure club called the Orbital Mission Explorers Circle. The membership appears to work something like a vacation timeshare, but for space. Brin and any other new members that join get preferential options to the mission seats or can sell the seat to another space traveler if there schedule just doesn’t allow for traveling to space that day.

This workstation is more then a little disconcerting when you first see it. We are so used to minimalist design, it’s nice to see something fully loaded. As you can see it’s like they crammed an entire living space inside. It’s designed by designer Peter J. Sucy and it has tons of functionality. So much so that it requires an arch to enter.

Your first destination, the seat, which is fully adjustable. From there you’ll work away with fully adjustable monitors, a keyboard and a mouse. Plenty of storage here too, all easily accessible. Better still, look at all the room it has for your toys and gadgets. The kid in me wants to live in one like a fort. But alas, it remains a concept. Keep your fingers crossed.

I have to say that it takes a special kind of woman to get onboard with the idea of having any kind of geek cake at her wedding. And symbollically, it’s right on target. After all, many guys would consider marriage to be the final run down the Death Star trench as she shoots a pair of lasers down the hole, blowing your space station to hell.

Pioneer over the weekend announced new additions to its line up of AVIC-F advanced in-dash navigators. These new offerings, which join the AVIC-F500BT shown off at CES, are the AVIC-F700BT, AVIC-F900BT and Premier branded AVIC-F90BT. Pricing is set at $850, $1,100 and $1,200, respectively, and all units will be available in June.

Pioneer is describing these in-dash units as going “beyond navigation” by offering “enhanced navigation and entertainment features paired with sophisticated voice control.” While you may read that however you choose there is no doubt Pioneer has packed these units with a ton of features, including “Apple iPod connectivity, Bluetooth, MSN Direct, HD radio, XM and SIRIUS Satellite Radio, single CD, DVD video playback and compressed audio and video playback through USB and SD memory devices.”
