This just in: Ice Invaders attack drinksYou’re a geek and so are we. So we understand. Sometimes you just can’t keep all that love for Space Invaders to yourself. You have to slip it in her drink like a nerd roofie, hoping that it will pique her interest. Maybe she’ll ask what it is. You can explain and in the process make her a nerd too. Maybe you’ll play the classic game together.

Not very likely. She’ll probably just tell you to keep your dork ice in that Shirley Temple you’re sipping. Hey, you tried. Ice Invaders is a silicone tray that will make Space Invaders ice or let you bake your own aliens. It will be available this spring. Pretend your going pew pew pew as they melt in your girlly drink.

Rare Space Invaders watch from JapanLook what our friend Technabob found. Limited Edition Space Invaders LED watches that came out a few years back in Japan. Until now, you couldn’t find them from here. Look at that watch face, full of retro awesomeness. The watch will cost you $207, but any true geek is already getting their credit card ready.

The watch features a red dot-matrix display showing you the current time. Press the button and the “Space Invaders” scroll across the display, then a giant animated invader dances across. Then “Game Over”. You can’t actually play the game, but it’s still, an awesome watch.

Atari Joystick ceramic candleholderThe Atari Joystick design lends itself to all kinds of mods and uses, other then the joystick it started out as. The Atari Joystick lamp comes to mind. This ceramic candle holder is yet another incarnation of the classic controller.

It’s perfect for the geek who wants to fly his geek flag and at the same time set the mood. Just dim the lights. Play your favorite Atari game sounds soundtrack and light your joystick candle. What could be more romantic? Dinner is almost done and your date will arrive soon my nerd friend. The only question is, will she be game for playing some Space Invaders for dessert? Or will she run like all the others?

Space Invaders retro tabletop game bank

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on January 15th, 2009

Space Invaders retro tabletop game bankThe Japanese love banks. Like us, they also love them some Space Invaders. This latest offering from Takara Tomy may look like an actual sized tabletop Space Invaders game, but it’s really a miniature replica bank. It’s a unique take on the whole bank concept. It features an LCD screen that unfortunately is not playable, but acts as coin counter.

It will take up to 80 100 yen coins, and each time you drop a coin in, another invader lights up. So, basically you are playing the game in reverse. In this case, it pays to have more invaders on screen. It makes saving money not only fun, but retro and geeky at the same time. It will help you save up for those Space Invaders headphones or that Space Invaders Keyboard you’ve been wanting.

Space Invaders bendable keyboard

Posted in Keyboards by Conner Flynn on September 3rd, 2008

Space Invaders bendable keyboardThere’s nothing like shooting some Space Invaders who are trying to take over the world. It used to be that we popped a few quarters in the machine and shot them all to hell. These days it’s all about buying merchandise that bears the likeness of the 8-bit invaders. Some of which is actually practical.

Take this awesome looking bendable keyboard for example. It manages to be completely flexible while displaying the invading army, which is great for those on the go. It’s sealed, dustproof and spill-proof. If you have an accident, just easily wipe off the keys. Looks like it comes in black/white and pink/white. It will only cost you $39.

Space Invaders Kit Kat bars invade Japan

Space Invaders Kit Kat bars invade Japan
This isn’t a gadget of course, but it does involve one of our favorite retro arcade games, Space Invaders. We love Space Invaders here at the ‘Brick and we’re a little jealous of our friends in Japan, where these Kit Kat bars are being produced in limited editions by Nestle for Taito arcades to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Space Invaders.

Putting Space Invaders on a Kit Kat should make it a bit easier to fend off the invading armada as you savor every delicious bite of their little bodies. I’d love to see more retro arcade candy bars hit the market, like a Pac-Man Reese’s cup and the like, but I wouldn’t be able to resist and I’d become a large geek instead of a trim geek.

Retro Space Invaders headphones

Retro Space Invaders headphones
Who doesn’t love Space Invaders? Answer: Those being invaded of course. Say you’re chillin’ in your room, by the gentle light of your Space Invaders lamp. Just outside your window, the moonlight gently illuminates their latest message to Earth. Soon the invasion will begin. But you don’t need to worry about that. Not after selling out your entire race. You will be spared and given your own island in the Bahamas.

What better way to drown out the sound of human extinction, then by donning a pair of retro Space Invaders headphones. They can be pre-ordered and will ship in mid-late October 2008 for $19.90. They’re free to traitors.

Space Invaders get all PC with Space Intruderz lamps

Space Invaders get all PC with Space Intruderz lamps
I never expected that the Space Invaders would go all Politically Correct, but hell everyone else has. Probably the head Invader realized that for like almost forty years now, the invasion hasn’t exactly been working,(Merchandise aside) so they needed a new image. Invaders sounds so cold, no one likes an invasion. Intruderz is pretty much the same, but less formal, not as cold and ruthless. But the truth is I don’t think Taito knows about it. shhhhh.

I’m not telling them either, because I love these little guys. They retail for about $48 or so, and they are the perfect gift for any gamer who grew up watching these guys when they still invaded.

Mysterious Firefox crop circle appears

Mysterious Firefox crop circle appears
Some strange things are happening on this planet. Are we being visited by a superior intelligence? How can one possibly explain the mysterious images that have appeared recently? First there was the Firefox logo spotted in deep space. Then things started to hit closer to home. This ominous design appeared out of nowhere recently. Now we have the latest message pictured above. What does it all mean? My theory is that it’s an intelligence test sent by beings who are far superior to us.

Think about it. All intelligent creatures love Space Invaders, just as any intelligent creature would use Firefox over IE. I think we are safe as long as some drunk idiot in a field doesn’t send them a response by way of a Windows Vista logo. If that happens, we can kiss our gadget-lovin behinds goodbye.

Shop for groceries, play some Atari

Shop for groceries, play some Atari
Clean up on isle six, I just kicked your ass at Missile Command. How cool is this? This Milwaukee, Wisconsin grocery store has an atari section, where you can hang out and play, complete with period TV, wallpaper and furniture. It’s a great way to get the guys to do the shopping, I’ll say that.

The display includes a fully-functional Atari 2600(Newer black version), and a nice assortment of about 50 classic games just waiting to be stolen. Looks like the only detail from my childhood that they missed is having my mom stand there nagging me while I’m trying to play Space Invaders. Otherwise, it’s like being there. Note to the employees: That plant fails to hide the cords.

Play classic arcade games in spreadsheets

Play classic arcade games in spreadsheets
Normally, you could use Microsoft Excel to create that business model for your next multi-million dollar idea, or you could calculate last month’s sales for your other business, but I think the thing to do would be to play classic arcade games on it. Games should always win over business.

If you live in Japan, programming video games using Excel Visual Basic macros is kind of an art form. People over there have recreated everything from Pac-Man to Space Invaders and Missile Command. With nice detail I might add. How about a spreadsheet game of Donkey Kong, Dig Dug and Tetris? Even Arkanoid.
