We’ve seen our share of projection alarm clocks, but now Sony has launched a stylish new projection alarm clock of their own, the Sony ICF-C717PJ. It’s designed to project the time on your bedroom wall or ceiling and can be set to different angles.

Some other features include a clock radio with dual alarms and an FM and AM tuner and you can wake up to the sound of a buzzer, or music from your iPhone or iPod.

Sony’s new BDPorter is a portable Blu-Ray projection machine in a rollable cabinet that will look right at home in your office. It comes with a Blu-ray player inside, a WXGA projector, surround sound headphones, speakers and a 60-inch screen.

This one is targeted mainly at corporate situations to use with presentations, or when you need to move it into another office etc. If you really wanted to, you could probably import one from Japan if you have a spare $7,700.

Not so long ago if you wanted to add a second or third display to your computer that meant you needed a video card with multiple outputs or maybe even an additional video card. That meant a significant outlay of money and buying new hardware.

DisplayLink came along and made adding multiple monitors as easy as plugging in a USB device. The company says that it has now sold more than one million USB GPUs since it launched. DisplayLink certified GPUs are available in a wide variety of products from many of the largest computer and accessory makers around.

Sony’s latest attempts at the projector market come in the form of these latest two models, the VPL-EX7 and VPL-EX70. Both of these models have the ability to throw a 60″ screen at 1,024 x 768 resolution from a distance of 1.8m, with a short focal lens.

The VPL-EX70 is labeled as BrighEra with a 900:1 contrast ratio and a brightness of 2600 lumens, while the VPL-EX7 has a 500:1 contrast ratio and a 2000 lumens brightness. There is no word on pricing yet.

Hitachi isn’t a name you hear as often in the consumer electronics realm as Sony or Samsung. Despite that, Hitachi makes some fantastic home theater and AV products. I own one of their plasma TVs and it is by far the best set I have tested. Hitachi is branching into the professional market with its latest AV projector.

The projector is called the CP-X10000 and offers a whopping 7,500 lumens of brightness and a contrast ratio of 2500:1. The projector offers ultra-wide range lens shift and a 10-bit full digital video processor along with a 10,000-hour filter.

If I had the space in my house, I would definitely prefer to have a projector set up rather than a normal HDTV. With a projector, you can get a giant size HD image that you can’t get with a LCD or plasma TV, short of spending $100k.

Sony has introduced a pair of new home theater projectors at CEDIA in Denver. One of the projectors is high-end and intended for custom installations. The custom install projector is called the VPL-VW70. It has a 60,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 800 ANSI lumens of brightness. It can also use an optional Anamorphic lens to provide large screen sizes with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The VW70 will retail for $8,000.

When geeks set out to make home theaters, the results are often astounding, with some very cool themes. Often based on Sci-Fi flicks, these amazing works of art are expensive labors of geek love. I proudly present some of the cooler home theaters that have recently caught our eye.

$6 million is a lot of money, no doubt. What would you do with that much cash if you had it? One possible option is to hit up audiophile Jeremy Kipnis to set up for you his self described Kipnis Studio Standard. Think of it as the ultimate home theater experience.

The Kipnis Studio Standard is described by writer Steve Guttenberg as being “all about aggressively advancing the state of the art of picture and sound presentation.” Kipnis has installed in this uber-amazing screen room a massive screen which showcases video projected from “a Sony ultra-high-resolution (4,096-by-2,160) SRX-S110 digital projector.” Damm.

Take a look at this super-portable DVD player concept designed by Yeon-shin Seung. The design looks similar to the ultra-portable CD player concept we say back in August but incorporates a flexible display screen that scrolls up which would be made he Sony full color flexible organic electroluminescent display material, according to the designer.

It starts out looking like a candy bar style phone and the top half swivels to expose a speaker, DVD controls and a place to turn the DVD. The screen then pulls up like a rolled up projector screen to provide the display. Pretty cool.

The debate between plasma and LCD still continues on but for those who have debated over whether avoiding the box solution entirely and dropping $2K on a front projector, the scales have just tilted more in your favor. Sony is bringing out two Bravia projectors which feature progressive resolution and high illumination in 1280 x 720, and best of all, they start at prices that are affordable.

The two models are the Bravia 2LCD VPL-AW15 ($1,300) and the VPL-AW10 ($1,000.) Both have a 165-watt ultra high pressure lamp that cranks out 1,100 lumens, a short focal-length …
