iPad 2 shows up early in China?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on March 2nd, 2011

The above mockup was spotted in China and seems to match closely what we have been hearing about the iPad 2. It has a slimmer profile, an almost entirely flat back, larger speaker, and rear- and front-facing cameras. The model number is one for the original Apple TV while the FCC ID is for a WiFi-only iPad, but those could be placeholders since this is a mockup and not a real working tablet.

It looks like the SIM card slot has been repositioned to a slot that was once expected to house an SD card reader. There is also the 3G antenna and the sloped power button and headphone jack.

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on January 23rd, 2011

Most card readers just do what it says on the tin, read cards, but this concept design goes one step further. It provides a simple solution to store all of those memory cards you have. Peng Qixuan has designed this card reader and we like what we see.

You can easily store your memory cards inside, while it functions as a card reader with a retractable USB port. This card reader would be a perfect travel companion. Too bad it’s just a concept right now.

The handheld Wikireader eBook device has just gotten a bit more attractive to buyers as it has received 33,000 books to add to its library thanks to Project Gutenberg which is now available for the Wikireader.

All 33,000 books can fit onto a 4GB micro SD card that the Wikireader accepts, which means you get to carry them around without a forklift. It works similarly to Wikipedia already on the devices, allowing you to search for titles by keyword.

ASUS introduces O!Play HD2 networked media player with USB 3.0

Posted in Media Players by Conner Flynn on March 3rd, 2010

ASUS has added a third model to their O!Play mediaplayer range, the ASUS O!Play HD2. Sadly we don’t have any information. Just the name, with no specs. However the photo reveals USB, eSATA and various forms of memory card reader.

Assuming that the O!Play HD2 is similar to the two models that have gone before it, we would guess 1080p HD video output via HDMI with networking support, either ethernet or 802.11n like the O!Play Air HDP-R3. Hopefully we will have full specs soon.

See that SIM card icon at the top of the display? That probably means that it supports 3G. Some other features are a 400MHz Samsung ARM CPU and support for DF, CHM, EPUB, TXT, HTM, HTML, RTF, PDF, DJVU, MOBI, and PRC formats. Hopefully we will know more soon.

Posted in Bluetooth by Conner Flynn on September 23rd, 2009

Bluetooth headset and microSD readerBrando is calling this one the Ultimate Bluetooth headset. What’s so ultimate about it? Maybe because it comes with a built-in microSD memory card reader and supports USB charging. Ultimate? Probably not. To be ultimate it would need to be an in-ear iPhone or something.

Still, it is convenient to carry a microSD memory card with you at all times in your Bluetooth headset. And it only costs $39 to give it a go. They also offer an 8GB microSD card bundle for $65.

Thanko pen reads 4 SD cards simultaneously

Thanko pen reads 4 SD cards simultaneouslyThanko has released a new four-slot USB SD card reader in the form of a pen. I’m not sure what situation would arise where you would need to read four different SD cards at the same time, but if it happens you are covered.

The SD4PEN can read four SD or SDHC cards (up to 16GB) as well as let you write all of the usual mundane things you write throughout the course of your day. Nothing on pricing yet or a release date, but we’re sure it will be soon. I mean you need another pen and you’ve got SD cards. You need this.

Posted in iRiver by Conner Flynn on March 2nd, 2009

Iriver looking to release its own E-ReaderYou may have noticed that e-book readers are starting to catch on. If this is news to you, you probably don’t own a Kindle. And since reading e-books is all the rage, we should see more manufacturers jump on board in due time.

iriver Japan (not iRiver from Korea) hopes to join in on the reindeer games by releasing their own e-book reader. Their offering looks more ike a rebadged version of the Netronix reader which was released last year. Apparently the iriver Japan device will be capable of handling PDF documents, have a simple joystick control interface, an SD memory card slot and audio file playback.

USB cable with built-in SD card reader

Posted in USB by Conner Flynn on March 2nd, 2009

USB cable with built-in SD card readerSo simple a solution, that it’s brilliant. Why we have never seen it before now, I have no idea. This mini-USB cable with an inline SD card reader from Brando combines the USB cable and the SD card. In doing so, it wins over our hearts, our minds and various other bodily orifices. The $12 cable will help you transfer files and photos from the SD card and will also assist you in charging your portable devices via USB.

Inserting an SD card will disable transfers from whichever device is hooked up to the mini-USB end to make way for SD card transfers, but the cable will keep charging the device. Once the card is removed, you’ll again be able to shuttle files between point A and point B.
