Microsoft to buy Sidekick maker Danger |
Microsoft announced Monday that it is going to acquire Danger, software maker for the popular consumer-targeted Sidekick mobile device. Reportedly the purchase came after months of negotiations, with Danger receiving a number of different offers and Microsoft doubling their original offer to keep Danger out of others hands. That offer has been rumored to be as much as $500 million, but no official terms of the deal have been revealed.
While Microsoft has done well making software for smartphones the company mostly targets business users and fewer general consumers. The Sidekick from Danger is almost the opposite and is aimed at the younger consumer-based market in which Microsoft seems to be keen on getting into. Microsoft also recently made a $44.6 billion offer to Yahoo to help build a larger online, consumer-facing presence and could have Danger in mind to be part of that overall strategy, working against dominate competitive figures like Google and RIM.

To address the numerous emails we’ve received over the past month after T-Mobile
After quite a long time of speculation and rumored pictures, T-Mobile and Danger have unveiled both the Sidekick LX and the Sidekick Slide. The two new mobile communication gadgets are both pretty cool but might each be targeted to a slightly different set of people.
The folks over at Hiptop3 have come across some classically blurry rumor-mill photos of the new upcoming Sidekick LX along with an advertisement showing a launch date. The ad shows that the new LX will be available on October 24 where you’ll be able to “kick it to the next level”. So, to answer all of your questions about the release date; I would still file this under “rumors” but just over a month away is the best thing we could find so far.
The folks over at HipTop3 came across some information on MySpace that leads us to believe that T-Mobile may be planning a launch party for a new Sidekick in October.

T-Mobile recently announced a new Limited Edition Sidekick 3, this one being designed by Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat. The number three of the Sidekick has some significance with Wade since it matches the number of years he’s been in the NBA, the number on his jersey and references his 3-point plays on the court. Also, Dwayne Wade has been a Sidekick 3 user for a number of years.
The Sidekick 3 has been out for few months now, but T-Mobile has brought some attention back to the popular device by bringing out two special editions. The Features have remained the same as the original Sidekick 3, but the designs are what’s new. There is one model designed by each of the Lifted Research Group and Diane von Furstenberg in green and black, respectively.
