Bram’s Cube is harder than Rubik’s Cube

Posted in Toys by Conner Flynn on August 31st, 2009

Bram's Cube is harder than Rubik's CubeAlright all you eggheads who can solve a Rubik’s Cube in like ten seconds. Here’s a harder challenge. Meet Bram’s Cube, created by the creator of BitTorrent, Bram Cohen. It offers more of a challenge by incorporating gears into the design.

It’s a two by two Rubik’s Cube, which seems like an easy puzzle to beat, but the gears add another layer of difficulty that is sure to be frustrating. I wouldn’t even know where to start with this thing. Sure you can align the blocks, but then the gears are all out of whack.

Kid plays Guitar Hero, solves 2 Rubik’s Cubes at the same time

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on August 9th, 2009

This kid is playing Guitar Hero on expert and solving two Rubik’s cubes simultaneously. Showoff! He goes by the handle of “JRefleX93″. And though he solves both cubes by the end of the video, he doesn’t hit every single note, but he hits more than you would have. With his elbow. In the end he has a 77% rating and his choice of nerd groupies.

This is six minutes of solid geek gold, until the end, when it fades to black and the kid gets too cocky letting out a groan that ruins the entire thing. But hey, props to this kid for six minutes of geek fun.

Rubiks Cube card reader

Rubiks Cube card readerOur fascination with the Rubik’s Cube seems never ending. It still entertains and frustrates us. The Rubiks cube probably inspired this awesome USB 270° x 270° Rubik Card Reader. Call it a hunch.

It sports the cube form factor of a Rubik’s Cube, but without the familiar color scheme. The idea is that you can twist all three levels so that you always have room to plug in all your memory cards. It also features a blue LED as a status indicator.

Petaminx Dodecahedral puzzleYou know those geniuses that can solve a Rubiks cube in like 20 seconds? This puzzle would drive even them insane. The Petaminx is a handmade puzzle by puzzle maker Jason Smith. It sort of resembles the Rubik’s cube.

It just happens to have twice as many sides and many more pieces to align. In all there are 975 parts and 1,212 stickers. It took mere 75 hours to build and that included the molding process and the placing each of those stickers by hand. Check out a video of this amazing puzzle below.

Rubik’s TouchCube: The first touchscreen Rubik’s Cube

Rubik’s TouchCube: The first touchscreen Rubik’s CubeThe Rubik’s cube is more popular then ever. It’s getting a spherical update, it’s also a lamp and it makes a great alarm clock too. So this touchscreen Rubik’s cube makes perfect sense.

Plus, if any toy/puzzle needed a touchscreen, it’s the Rubik’s cube. It’s a natural progression. Obviously the TouchCube works just like the old version, but instead of turning it’s segments, just swipe a finger in a straight line or an ‘L’ shape. There’s even an accelerometer built in so that only the upwards-facing surfaces respond to your touch. How awesome is that?

Rubik’s Cube gets spherical update

Rubik’s Cube gets spherical updateRubik’s 360 is not an Xbox 360 title. It’s the next version of the popular cube puzzle that is a sphere. The device is about to be officially unveiled in Germany this week at a national toy show. As you might imagine nerds the world over are enthusiastic about laying their hands on it.

The gadget has six balls trapped inside transparent plastic spheres. To solve it, you have to figure out how to get the internal balls “from an inner sphere into matching slots on the outer sphere by shaking them through a middle sphere that has only two holes.”

Rubik’s Cube lamp is a puzzling light source

Rubik’s Cube lamp is a puzzling light sourceThe frustrating 80s puzzle we all grew up on makes for a cool light source. The Rubik’s Cube Light lamp by Eric Pautz is yet another variation on the popular cube. What’s cool about this one is that the light shines through and creates many colorful patterns.

If you already have the Rubiks cube alarm clock, you’d be remiss if this lamp doesn’t turn your eye. The gadget is available in two versions, color and transparent. The colored version reflects the colors that make the puzzle so popular and can display it scrambled and unscrambled. For a minimalist approach, there’s a transparent cube, which gives off a clear white light.

Rubiks Cube alarm clock is retro cool

Rubiks Cube alarm clock is retro cool
This clock looks awesome and it reminds you of the 80’s immediately and the fact that you couldn’t solve this thing to save your life. Have no fear, this one will be easy to solve since only the top row twists to switch between time, temperature, alarm and date modes.

It’s also very affordable at $24.98. Just think, now when you wake up, if you are out of it enough you might think it’s the 80’s again, just for a second or two. Just thank your lucky stars that it doesn’t require you to fully solve it in order to shut it off. If that were the case, it would have to hit the wall very hard one morning.

Rubiks Cube Solver

Years ago when Rubik’s cubes were new and popular I worked on one for weeks and eventually developed a system for solving them in a relatively short amount of time.

I was able to do this because I figured out that the colors were adhesive stickers that I could remove and stick back on where I wanted.

Pictured here is a machine made out of legos that not only can manipulate the Rubik’s cube, but it can also identify the color and solve the puzzle. At around 30 seconds a move it takes a little …
