Callo and Cally cellphone robots are cute, creepy

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on May 7th, 2010

These cellphone bots were developed by PhD student Ji-Dong Yim and Prof Chris D. Shaw at the School of Interactive Arts and Technology at Simon Fraser University, Canada. They are capable of displaying facial expressions to let you know of their moods, while also performing gestures and dancing when you get an incoming call.

It uses the Nokia N82′s camera to detect human faces and will mimic arm gestures using hand tracking. These bots are pretty cute. Almost too cute. Like they will get up to no good when you turn your back.

50 awesome papercraft robots

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on May 3rd, 2010

We’ve seen our share of cool papercraft projects around here. We just wish we had time to put them all together. Over at our robot site Botropolis, we’ve compiled fifty papercraft robots, which should keep you busy for a while.

Robots will be the death of you and I one day, so we may as well build some cool paper toys to play with and display. Many of these are as good as having an actual action figure and they cost much less.

Bender iPhone case and keychain

Posted in iPhone Accessories by Conner Flynn on May 2nd, 2010

If you’re a fan of Futurama or just of robots in general, you can never have too much Bender. This Bender iPhone case is from etsy seller NOKOMOMO and comes with a matching keychain.

Admittedly, it looks as if Bender is a mask wearing bandit or has some Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle genes, but it’s still a pretty cool iPhone case. You gotta love that beer-swilling cigar smoking bot, so why not show your love by buying this baby at just $24.

Lego robot plays Tetris

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on April 21st, 2010

We’ve seen our share of robots and we’ve seen our share of Tetris related items. But until now, the two have never collided in such a cool way. This robot plays Tetris! Branislav Kisacanin’s Tetris-Bot uses a video camera to watch the computer screen and determine which shape is which and where to put them.

That info is then sent to a Lego Mindstorm NXT robot, who hovers over the keyboard with three fingers. You might also notice the R.O.B.-like head too.

Segway robots now training Australian snipers

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2010

Snipers are used to using cardboard cutouts of bad guys to practice their deadly arts, but they have long needed better practice targets that move. As usual, robots are the answer. The Australian Defense Force and Marathon Robotics took a bunch of two-wheeled RMP 200 Segway robots, and placed hoodies on them just for kicks.

The robots are programmed to wander around randomly on the course just like people walking about and minding their own business. When the sniper picks off his target, the remaining robots all scatter automatically. Again just like people who are terrified and screaming.

Lego Mindstorms robot powered by Nokia N900, Twitter

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on March 23rd, 2010

Is there an area of our lives that Twitter has not taken over? Not anymore. Twitter has many uses and one of those uses is commanding robots like this Lego Mindstorm robot. It’s controlled by a Nokia N900 phone and users can tweet commands to the @N900Niko account and tell Niko the robot what to do. Stuff like, move forward, turn around or take a photo with the N900.

Photos are posted on Twitter using Twitpic. While you aren’t likely to see anything shocking, you’ll see plenty of floor, some chairs, maybe a trashcan. Who knows, it may go all Alfred Hitchcock and let you witness a murder. Probably not though.

OO HD wireless projector concept is very cool

Posted in Concepts by Shane McGlaun on March 9th, 2010

Is it just me or does it seem like more and more of the tech products unveiled today look like robots from the films of 80′s childhood memories. Take the new OO projector concept; it looks very cool but it reminds me of flying robots from “Batteries Not Included” or that robot that you punch in the nose to turn off from one of the new Star Wars flicks.

The projector is made from a monocoque carbon fiber chassis and is wireless. It has WiFi or an internal SSD for content playback and runs off some sort of battery. The battery promises three hours away from an AC outlet.

iRobot delivers its 3,000th PackBot

Posted in iRobot by Shane McGlaun on February 17th, 2010

Robots are a big deal around here and we are all anxiously waiting for the day when robots will clean the house, mow the lawn, and cook for us so we can spend more time on video games and Facebook. There are some robots already available like the iRobot vacuum cleaners for homes and some robots for law enforcement and military use.

One of the most common robots in the military is the iRobot PackBot. iRobot has announced that it has shipped its 3,000th PackBot since the device was introduced in 2007. The PackBot has tank treads and an articulating arm with a camera to show the remote driver what is going on.

Zibits mini RC robots break cover

Posted in Toys by Shane McGlaun on February 15th, 2010

If you read SlipperyBrick much you know we are suckers for cool RC toys and robots. When you combine both into one tiny package, you really grab my attention. A company called Senario has unveiled a tiny RC robot called Zibits.

The little bot can be had in 12 different designs to appeal to all tastes. Each of the little bots is a bit more than 2-inches in size and has a remote to control the robot.

Cat Vs. robot arm

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on February 11th, 2010

Before robots take over the world, they’ll have a few obstacles to overcome. Obstacles like cats. As evidenced by this video where some guy decided to pit his robot arm against his girlfriend’s cat.

The result is both adorable and tragic. And it’s all from the robot’s POV. Makes me want to watch a whole movie about cats and bots battling for the fate of the Earth, but that’s just me.

Robot Camera makes your subject smile

Posted in Cameras by Conner Flynn on February 11th, 2010

Sometimes it can be tough to make the subject of your photographs smile. You could make a funny face, tell a funny joke or just use this Robot Camera. This camera will take three photos from different perspectives with each shot, since its eyes and mouth are really lenses.

It’s an old school robot that uses traditional film though, no digital here. It will cost you $59.99 and comes in black or white colors. If you love robots, this is the camera for you.

Robonaut2: NASA’s humanoid robot astronaut

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on February 4th, 2010

We’ve sent robots into space before, but nothing humanoid like this guy. If monkeys can get shot into space, then why not? That way astronauts can get creeped out by robots just like we do down on Earth. Should make them feel more at home.

Robonaut2 was developed by NASA and GM. It’s basically a trainable, expendable crew member who can be sent out to do dangerous stuff that astronauts don’t want to risk their lives doing. Robonaut2 is ambidextrous and can use the same tools as human astronauts, while able to lift up to 20lbs.

GNO3 Gundam USB flash drive from Bandai Japan

Posted in USB Flash Drives by Conner Flynn on January 27th, 2010

This guy looks a little big to be a flash drive. Then again it is a Gundam. Straight from Bandai Japan, this GNO3 Gundam USB flash drive will protect your desk from other robots and evildoers. It comes in capacities of 1GB, 2GB and 4GB (We think).

It also comes pre-loaded with a GN03 game to pass the time when you should be working. Why not buy two and face them off against each other? If only they moved and I could have my own Rock Em Sock Em robots.

Xbox 360 Transformers All Spark mod

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on January 20th, 2010

If you want to get the attention of some giant ass robots, then do what this guy did. Turn your XBox 360 into the All Spark. Just don’t be surprised when Optimus Prime shows up at your door and reaches through your house to get it.

Oh and the All Spark is supposed to turn all of your other stuff into robots, so this probably isn’t a good idea. Unless you like your XBox suddenly walking around and shooting at you. It’s a pretty sweet mod though. I just hope this guy is still in one piece.

Botropolis: This week in robots

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on January 15th, 2010

Happy Friday everyone. It’s time to take a look at what’s happening in the wonderful world of robots. We covered quite a bit this week over at Botropolis. And as far as we know, no robot has killed a human this week or through inaction allowed him to be killed, so that’s always something. Also we haven’t seen any reports of humans being abducted by robots and taken to secret lairs. But they are still taking our jobs at the same rate. So it’s been a good week. Here’s some of what we covered this week.

TrueCompanion: The World’s First Sex Robot Doll.

ENON: The Robot Salesman.

Predictions: Spot Robots On Time Traveler Transit Map.
