Lego Pancake Robot

Posted in Robots by Reuben Drake on June 28th, 2011

Robots making me breakfast? Sign me up for that. This Lego Pancake robot can make pancakes in a bunch of different shapes which can be pre-programmed into the robot before entering your stomach.

The Pancake Bot is a 3 axis CNC made robot that uses the Z coordinate as the Pancake Batter Dispenser Control. I can only hope that one day we will be able to buy robots like this and welcome them into our home.

Darpa’s Hologram Goggles Will Call In The Drones

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on April 11th, 2011

When you need to send in deadly robots, holograms might be the answer. As it is right now, authorizing and targeting air strikes is a process that can be bureaucratic. Sometimes it takes lawyers, intelligence analysts, air controllers, and commanders at multiple layers to get it done.

Well DARPA has a new idea. Give the job to one guy on the ground who can control a drone or manned plane that’s circling above. A single man is low profile enough to slip into areas that need slipping into without alarming the locals and giving away his position. The soldier would use the goggles to view markers and call in airstrikes.

Robot hand with space glove designed for NASA hits eBay

Posted in Robots by Shane McGlaun on September 27th, 2010

People put some weird stuff on eBay and some of the stranger items are fake. If you are a loaded geek that likes space and robots, you need to head over to eBay and bid on an authentic robot hand developed for NASA.

The hand was made on a contract for NASA along with another prototype, it and the one on auction are the only two ever made. The hand was built by Mark Rosheim in the 90′s and wears a custom-made glove constructed by the firm that makes space suits for NASA.

Carnegie Mellon’s robot snake now climbs trees

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on September 6th, 2010

The way we see it, humans have just two deeply rooted fears. Both are completely justified. Robots and snakes. Well, now Carnegie Mellon has combined both effectively and taught its robotic snake how to climb trees. “Uncle Sam” is a modular snake robot and the latest in a line of snakes from Carnegie Mellon’s Biorobotics Lab. Uncle Sam can roll, wiggle and side-wind with the best of them.

Now that it can wrap itself around a pole and climb vertically, it can therefore climb trees. Maybe even pluck an apple and offer it up to an Eve-bot. We were scared of robot snakes before, but now it might truly be time to whimper and hide somewhere and wait out the coming robotpocalypse.

Skitterbot is the world’s fastest legged micro-robotic toy

Posted in Toys by Shane McGlaun on August 31st, 2010

I am a sucker for robots and remote controlled toys so when you combine them I am interested. A new product has been unveiled from a company called MyDeskpets called the Skitterbot. The little RC robot toy is very fast and runs on a rechargeable battery.

The bug has a 5-function remote control and can be had in four different colors. Each control can be set to one of four frequencies to let up to four players race at one time. The robots will sell for $19.99 at Toys R Us and Radio Shack stores around the country.

Robonaut 2 gets packed up for mission to ISS

Posted in NASA by Shane McGlaun on August 16th, 2010

I have talked before about Robonaut 2 or R2 as it is known. R2 is a robot built by NASA and GM to work in space with humans. R2 is one of the most capable robots ever built and can handle a wide variety of tools thanks to complex articulating hands.

The mission that will take R2 to the ISS this fall is coming close to launch. NASA has been looking at how to pack up R2 safely for the trip aboard the space shuttle while still making it easy for astronauts to unpack R2.

Motion-controlled Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on August 8th, 2010

Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots have gone all futuristic on us. Zachery Shivers and Anne Flinchbaugh have created a motion-controlled version of the game as part of Texas Instruments’ Co-op Design Challenge. This version, unlike the original has plenty of servos and circuit boards underneath the ring.

But the main event here is TI’s accelerometer-equipped Chronos watch, which lets you translate actual punches into rock ‘em sock ‘em punches. Awesome.

Crazy Creepy Telenoid R1 will scare grandpa into a new pair of Depends

Posted in Robots by Shane McGlaun on August 2nd, 2010

Why is it that the Japanese make so many robots and give them the creepiest designs they can find? What happened to robots that looked like robots? I’d be more comfortable talking to Robby the Robot than the creepy ass Telenoid R1.

This robot is so creepy it makes Gene Simmons look like a nice guy. The idea is that the blob-like android would be teleoperated and is the size of a small child and is used by kids to transmit their presence to grandparents and others that are far away.

WowWee’s Roboscooper picks things up

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on August 1st, 2010

WowWee’s robots are always awesome as fun companions, but they aren’t very useful for much else. Up until now that is. The company’s new Roboscooper will actually pick stuff up off your floor. Which means that this little guy will clean everything your Roomba can’t.

He takes six AAA batteries, so he can potentially do alot of cleaning. The catch is that it will only pick up small, one ounce objects, and its storage capacity is not very big. You can operate this guy in autonomous or remote-controlled mode. There’s also a “whack” mode, which makes this little bot swat objects out of his way.

Marugoto Tamachan portable watermelon cooler

Posted in Outdoors by Conner Flynn on July 19th, 2010

When we tire of sending robots into space, watermelons are our next great hope, as evidenced by this watermelon spacesuit. Okay, it’s really a Watermelon cooler, but it clearly shows that Watermelons will inherit the Earth.

The Marugoto Tamachan portable watermelon cooler is a state of the art Watermelon spacesuit that will keep your fruit fresh and succulent. And it can be toted around like a small child at the same time thanks to that handle.

BeerBot shirt from ThinkGeek is a frat boy’s best friend

Posted in clothing by Shane McGlaun on July 14th, 2010

ThinkGeek has all sorts of epic geeky clothing and gadgets. The company often combines the geeky clothing with some sort of useful feature like a shirt that has a guitar you can really play.

The latest shirt from ThinkGeek is the BeerBot Bottle Opening Shirt. The thing is offered for about $20 and is in small to XXL. The front of the shirt has a screen-printed robot that is in the shape of a beer bottle, but reminds me a lot of Bender.

20 Nao robots dancing

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on June 22nd, 2010

We already knew that Nao had the ability to dance, but check out this small Nao army all dancing together in preparation for some sort of musical apocalypse where they will dance on our graves.

I wonder if other bots will tune in and buy tickets to this cute, but terrible for us little number. Yes, this is what the Earth will look like when we are gone. Robot party time.

Self-Publishing is easy with Amazon’s Digital Text Platform

Posted in Review by Conner Flynn on June 1st, 2010

Whether you own an ereader or not, chances are you’ve heard all about how self-publishing is easier today than it has ever been before, allowing authors to quickly and easily publish their work. And I’m here to tell you that it’s true. However many authors out there still haven’t taken advantage of it.

Maybe you don’t have the time to look into it, maybe you’re still getting over the sting from all of the rejection letters you got in the old days, with the old way of publishing. Whatever the reason, many times we hear about new and great ways to do things and it just goes in one ear and out the other. Probably because we think there has to be a catch.

Robot USB Hubs with USB ports in their arms & legs

Posted in USB by Conner Flynn on May 18th, 2010

These awesome retro robots are actually Robot USB Hubs. Each has four usb ports, one on each of their arms and legs. They also feature LED eyes which show you the power status when they’re connected. These USB Robots are available in six different colors and designs, like pink, red, black, light blue, gray and yellow.

They are only $18.95 each. They’re pretty cute. If you buy more then one, make sure they don’t start plotting your demise behind your back. I love robots, so I’ll be getting several of these myself.

Robot Matryoshkas

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on May 10th, 2010

Robots don’t always have to be scary. Sometimes they can be cute and geeky, like these awesome robot Nesting Dolls (Matryoshkas). It’s a new take on the classic old Russian Toy.

These nesting dolls have been designed to look like cool retro robots. And when you have robots within robots, does anything get any funner? Maybe I’m just a nerd, but I like these and at just $14.99, I have money left over to buy other robots too.
