LED clock eats bugs and converts them into energy

Posted in Clocks by Conner Flynn on June 29th, 2009

LED clock eats bugs and converts them into energyThis LED clock from British designers Jimmy Loizeau and James Auger is a morbid flycatcher and a timepiece in one. Think of it like a clock with spider sensibilities. It harvests insects on a sticky roller that’s covered in flypaper, then drops the corpses into a microbial fuel cell.

The dead bug is digested by the bacteria inside, and the chemical changes power the clock. Pretty neat and disgusting.

Folding design thins down the obese UK plug

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on June 23rd, 2009

I’ve never been to the UK myself, mostly because I don’t trust their large and obese outlet plugs. Yep, your plugs are enough to keep me away from your country. I mean, if you can’t figure out a small plug… Well, I don’t want any part of that. The large UK plugs may soon change however, thanks to one designer.

The video is slow side, but here’s a breakdown. Like us, the UK is filled with slim electronics, but those gadgets have actually become skinnier than the required 1.8-inch-thick power plug. This new design can collapse to just 1cm (or .4 inches) when not in use, allowing it to squeeze into small bags and pockets. And no more unnecessary pressure on the prongs when your bag is set down the wrong way.

R2-D2 Pez Dispenser USB Flash Drive

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on June 16th, 2009

R2D2 Pez Dispenser USB Flash DriveAn R2D2 Pez Dispenser is a pretty cool geek toy by itself. But it’s even better when that R2 Pez dispenser is also a USB flash drive. Candy + storage = Awesome. More impressive, it is still a working Pez dispenser.

It can’t hold quite as much as an un-tampered with dispenser, but that’s still pretty awesome, because the lost candy is replaced with storage. It can only hold 3 pieces of Pez. Hey, the important thing is that it can hold any at all. It will hold 2GB of data.

LOOP: Ecofriendly Dell desktop that never becomes obsolete

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on June 14th, 2009

LOOP: Ecofriendly Dell desktop that never becomes obsolete Normally, we buy a computer, use it for maybe two years, sometimes less, and it’s headed for the landfill. A more conscious user might just recycle the parts and use them for something else. An even better idea is this new system that never gets obsolete and so never requires throwing away.

This Jocko Chan designed computer for Dell provides an easy update of better components. Called LOOP, the system is ordered online and delivered directly to your home. All upgrades are available to rent for a limited period of time with an additional charge. The company’s employees would take care of all repair and enhancements. The components which are working in good condition are re-used whereas all other components are taken back for recycling.

Numeric Keypad with a Spacebar

Posted in Keyboards by Conner Flynn on June 9th, 2009

Numeric Keypad with a SpacebarIf you have the type of job where you type numbers into your computer all day, you no doubt appreciate having a separate numeric keypad that you can position anywhere on your desk. Such keypads have a few extra keys on there besides the numbers, typically an enter key and a few calculating keys.

Here’s how this one will blow your mind. Are you sitting down? This one has a spacebar! I know right? At long last you can add spaces to long strings of numbers. If 8 and 9 are not getting along, you can separate them until they chill and learn to live together. Numbers will never be the same again.

49-port USB hub

Posted in USB by Conner Flynn on May 29th, 2009

49-port USB hubMost computers only have about 2 to 4 USB ports, even the best motherboards only offer 10 or 15 USB ports. But let’s face it, you need more. You have your flash drives, your USB toys, USB Christmas lights, drink coolers etc. You NEED more ports in a USB hub.

This baby has 49. That’s right 49. You’ll never be without a USB port again unless you have way too many USB gadgets. Like say, 50. It’s actually meant for a more professional environment, like say, getting input from 49 different cameras simultaneously and the like. But you can have one too. It’s powered from a standard ATX power supply.

OCZ Neutrino 10-inch DIY Netbook Review

Posted in Review by Shane McGlaun on May 29th, 2009

oczneutrinoI am a big fan of netbooks and use a MSI Wind U100 when I am traveling and have never missed my larger and much more bulky Dell laptop. Being a big fan of computers and gadgets, my desk is full of old notebook and desktop hard drives and sticks of RAM. If you have the same sort of hardware lying around, today we are going to check out what could well be the perfect netbook for you. The OCZ Neutrino is billed as a DIY netbook and if you are the type who builds your own PCs, it’s not nearly as DIY as you are used too. The machine lacks storage, RAM and an OS. What it does have comes at a lower price. Is the OCZ Neutrino right for you? Read on to find out.

SIM Card Spy Ear Power Strip: Eavesdrop and power gadgets at the same time

Posted in Spy Gear by Conner Flynn on May 27th, 2009

SIM Card Spy Ear Power StripThe SIM Card Spy Ear Power Strip is a fully working 8–way power strip. But it’s so much more. It also contains a rechargeable battery and a tri-band mobile phone transmitter. Just put in your choice of SIM card, plug the unit into a wall socket, someplace where your enemy is residing, then dial the SIM number on your mobile phone and you’re in. Instant eavesdropping.

It won’t work with 3G networks. $66.00 is a bargain in the spy world. As usual, you just have to pray that your enemy does not read tech blogs or else he might be onto you.

Simvalley PICO RX-80: Credit card sized mobile phone

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on May 27th, 2009

Simvalley PICO RX-80: Credit card sized mobile phonePhones keep getting smaller, but this is ridiculous. This is one of the smallest mobile phones we’ve seen. It’s dubbed the Simvalley PICO RX-80 and it’s just 1cm thick, making the Simvalley PICO RX-80 about the size of a credit card.

Due to the size it isn’t going to have many great features. It sports a 1.2 inch LCD screen with a resolution of 96 x 49 and the phone itself measures a tiny 50 x 800 x 10mm. Some other specs include: Dual-band for GSM 900/1800 networks, Backlit buttons and display Backlit screen and keys, reminder, hidden identity, speed dialing, keypad lock, and 32MB Internal Memory.

Lego USB hubs are stackable

Posted in USB by Conner Flynn on May 13th, 2009

Lego USB hubs are stackableWe’ve seen our share of Lego USB drives, but these new Lego USB hubs are actually stackable, therefore totally awesome.

Each Lego USB Hub comes with four USB ports, and in a variety of colors that include red, blue, yellow and black. Sadly, they aren’t an official Lego product and so are only available in Korea for about $12 each. That’s a shame. I really wanted to build an entire Lego wall using these and go for the coveted Guinness world record of “Most hubs in a single wall, made by some lonely dork”.
