Posted in APC,Android,Software by Shane McGlaun on August 25th, 2010

One of the keys to driving with an eye towards being green and improving economy is to watch how you accelerate and keep an eye on mileage figures. Some cars have onboard computers for this, but others lack such systems.

PLX Kiwi has unveiled several cool products that plug into the OBDII port on modern cars, can monitor all sorts of things on the vehicle. The Kiwi Drive Green Save Gas module monitors green savings, and offers 20 green driving lessons.

4,400 Chevrolet Volt owners to be eligible for home charging stations

Posted in Automotive by Shane McGlaun on June 18th, 2010

One of the most interesting coming electric cars is the Chevrolet Volt. The Volt has an electric drive train and runs exclusively from electric power. However, the Volt does have a gas-powered generator for making electricity to extend the cars driving range.

Chevrolet has announced that 4,400 Volt buyers will be eligible for a free 240V charge station. The 240V charge station will allow the Volt to recharge faster than the 120V cable that the car comes with. The charge stations will be paid for from Recovery Act funds.

Hot Wheels: Margarita Madness

Posted in Toys by Conner Flynn on May 3rd, 2009

The coolest thing my Hot Wheels cars ever did was go in loops real fast and lose a little paint with each crash. What you see above is a hot wheels track that was hacked into a margarita dispenser. The track is set up with a series of microswitches and a Basic Stamp 1 board to communicate that your Hot Wheels cars have completed the tricks performed.

That’s when this system rewards you as a 12-volt pump fills up the margarita cup from the pre-mixed gas can full of alcohol. I’m guessing the more you play this game, the funner it gets. It’s the new nerd drinking game of choice for modders and Hot Wheels enthusiasts alike.

100 MPG Hummer H3

Posted in Automotive by Conner Flynn on April 28th, 2009

100 MPG Hummer H3This article is bound to confuse you. I mean, we are used to hating on Hummers because they are mega gas hogs. They basically roll around on four wheels and destroy the Earth right? Well, yeah. But this one gets an amazing 100 MPG.

It’s a modified electric Hummer H3 that manages to outdo even a Prius. My one question is this. Is it still okay to make fun of Hummers, or does this change everything? I know you get sick just seeing the familiar SUV form, but 100 MPG!

Tesla unveils Model S electric family car

Posted in Automotive by Shane McGlaun on March 27th, 2009

teslamodels-sbElectric vehicles have a lot of appeal to many drivers. You can charge them from the AC outlet in your home and never have to hit the gas station again. Electric cars are also better for the environment than gasoline and diesel vehicles. The problem is that most electric vehicles lack the range many drivers need in a car.

Tesla, famous for its Tesla Roadster, announced a new electric vehicle called the Model S. Unlike the two-seat Roadster, the Model S is a seven passenger electric vehicle that promises to take all passengers up to 300 miles per charge.

The Vertu Signature Dragon

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on December 24th, 2008

The Vertu Signature DragonThe Wynn is one of those super luxurious hotels along the Strip at Las Vegas, so of course they host a whole bunch of high-end items such as exotic cars, designer clothes and expensive phones. The Vertu shop there is currently displaying it’s latest luxury cell phone, the Vertu Signature Dragon. Just like the Vertu Signature Cobra, the Dragon is not yet featured on the company’s website.

It’s a pretty cool looking phone. I think the only thing they could have done was to make the dragon’s eyes glow red when there’s an incoming call. Sadly, it doesn’t breath fire either, but it will burn a hole in your pocket with it’s enormous cost.

Working LEGO V8 engine

Posted in Toys by Conner Flynn on October 1st, 2008

LEGO V8 engineWe mean works as in it does stuff like move and light up. It doesn’t suck gas. Proving that with enough time, Lego pieces and will, you can make anything, some guy made an actual Lego V8 engine. It took 4 months to complete.

Which is probably why GM and Ford choose not to use Legos. Plus Lego cars are super heavy and hard to sit in. Plus next thing you know, you’d have Lego and Duplo monopolizing the car market and that wouldn’t be good. Still I suppose they could arrange for the outside of 50% of Lego cars to have the bricks facing inward and half facing outward so that when they crash, they have a 50/50 chance of either crashing or interlocking which should be safer.

Knight Rider GPS puts KITT in your car
You and I both know that this is the only GPS worth a tinker’s damn. Do you really have to think about it? Mio’s new GPS system gives you directions using the voice of KITT. It promises lots of fun episodes in Vegas and a show-down with Semi-truck enemy or two. It boots up saying “Hello Michael, where do you want to go today?”

That’s enough for some of you right there, but then it goes and uses a Trans-Am as your cars icon, also features dual LED scanner lights on each side to complete the whole KITT theme. $270 is what it will cost you. And you didn’t have to have surgery or change your identity at all. Available in a few months.

Ferrari Go-Cart with dashboard computer
This pint sized $2,400 Ferrari FXX Exclusive means business. It’s a great way to encourage your kids to worship overpriced sportscars. It’s a pedal go-cart with some nice details like spoilers, 7 gears, 12-inch lightweight metal wheel rims, and perhaps the coolest feature: A digital dashboard computer for keeping an eye on your speed and lap times.

It uses pedal power so your kid will be safe assuming he isn’t on a Kool-Aid sugar rush, which is about the only way they’ll reach dangerous speeds. It will only cost you £1239 in real-life gas money.

Tankpitstop robot arm fills motorist’s tanks

Tankpitstop robot arm
For those who hate to get out of the car to fill up their gas tank, a new robot friend is only too glad to be of service and he may be in your future. Those who live in the Netherlands can take advantage of it right now. The Tankpitstop robotic arm cost it’s Dutch inventors $111,100, and it uses sensors and a car database to accurately open a car’s gas flap, unscrew the cap and fill the tank with gas.

Nico van Staveren, the inventor got the idea when he spotted a robot arm milking a cow on a farm. He figured if a robot arm could extract fluid from a cow, why could it not then put precious gas in a car. He hopes to see his robot arm in service at more gas stations around the Netherlands soon.

Exhaust Burger: cooking with your tail pipe

Posted in Automotive,Humor by Conner Flynn on January 23rd, 2008

Exhaust Burger
Who hasn’t thought about cooking with the harmful pollutants that come from your car exhaust. Some brilliant Iranians have made the dream a reality, so you can now make the greasiest and nastiest car char broiled burgers anywhere.

Actually, they seem to have figured out a safe way to do this, so your meat doesn’t look like a black lung when it comes out. It uses a clamshell design to direct the gases around the burger, without polluting the meat. The only downside is that you’d have to stop every so often to either change out patties or flip the burger as it looks like it only cooks one side at a time. And because of the design, you might have to be careful about hitting a big bump and having the entire thing come away.

Gas powered RC car can go 60mph

Posted in R/C Toys,Toys by Conner Flynn on October 29th, 2007

Ford GT gas powered RC Car.RC cars aren’t just for kids anymore. Not when your toy can reach speeds up to 60 MPH. Let’s face it, the bigger and faster they are, the more we want one under our Christmas tree.

This particular RC car is gas powered. Hence the power. It’s a 1:5 scale replica of a Ford GT, which is also built for speed. Under the hood is a 23cc engine with 15kb metal gear ratio, 450cc fuel tank, and even disc brakes. Just in case you want to slow down. Yeah right.

Four more years until you can have your jetcar

PAL-V flying carHere we are seven years into the new millennium and there isn’t a flying automobile in sight. Wasn’t the future supposed to look a lot more cool by now? If a European company is correct with their prediction we may have the means to turn your vehicle into a flying craft and in only four short years.

The design sketch is for the PAL-V, or Personal Air and Land Vehicle. Designed by Dutch-based inventor John Bakker the vehicle uses a Dynamic Vehicle Control system so that when it’s rolling on the ground using its three wheels it won’t go flipping off the road and when it’s flying in the air the gyroscope keeps the unit level.

Mitsubishi Unveils the Electric i MIEV Sport

Posted in Cars,Concepts,Mitsubishi by Darrin Olson on September 8th, 2007

The Mitsubishi i MIEV Sport electric car has a solar roof and wind turbines in the grillMitsubishi took the wraps off of a new zero-emission, all-electric concept car called the e MIEV Sport. Aside from having a pretty cool look to it, the i MIEV Sport features a couple less-common additions to add juice back to the battery while driving.

As with many other electric and hybrid cars, this one uses a regenerative braking system, but also adds a solar roof and small wind turbines built into the front grill. Additions like these aren’t going to make a drastic difference in the range, but adding a convex solar roof was found to bring as much as an additional 20 mile range to a Prius. The turbines would likely be less, but certainly can’t hurt.
