R/C cars steered by Android smartphones

Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on July 20th, 2011

R/C cars are fun. Almost every kid has played with one at some point. Now the BlueDrone project wants to use your Android smartphone as a controller and get rid of those clunky remotes. The concept pairs the car with the Bluetooth-enabled handset and allows you to maneuver it with your phone using the onscreen controls.

It delivers a drive time of 3 hours with a range of about 30 feet. The custom app will let the driver use the accelerometer to steer as an alternative to the onscreen wheel as well. They just need $200,000 to commercialize the project. We hope they get it.

Posted in Pioneer by Conner Flynn on May 9th, 2011

Pioneer Japan has introduced four new and very interesting in-car navigation systems. They use a dash-mounted camera to display live images on the screens and superimpose digital images on it to help you navigate. The Augmented Reality GPS systems include the AVIC-VH09CS, AVIC-VH09, AVIC-ZH09CS and AVIC-ZH09. The systems can also show distances between cars and points of interest.

But that’s not all. They can also tell which lane the car is in, if a light is red or green and it can identify other traffic signals. All four feature DVD video playback support, Bluetooth, USB ports, a 1Seg digital TV tuner, and an SD card slot. Hard drive-based navigation is standard, as well as three years of free map data updates.

Posted in iPhone Accessories by Conner Flynn on March 20th, 2011

How many times have you been out and about and said to yourself, I really wish I knew how much that model of car is going for? If this happens to you often, then check this out. If you’re living in Sweden, price comparison site Bilpriser.se has just rolled out a new iPhone app that lets you shoot a photo of a car’s license plate and retrieve it’s specs and compare prices for that vehicle.

Apparently it just checks out the government registration database to locate the car’s make and model, then checks the information against their own database so that the right information will be sent to the right users. There are over 9,000 models and 80,000 different versions so you should get the right information most of the time.

2012 Ford Focus will call for an ambulance if you crash

Posted in Automotive by Conner Flynn on March 1st, 2011

At CeBIT, Ford CEO Allan Mulally unveiled a new feature of the new Ford Focus that will launch next year. It’s called Sync Emergency Assistance and the service will come free with every Ford that has Sync installed. Sync Emergency Assistance uses your phone to make sure that drivers and passengers aren’t left unattended or stranded when they get into a car accident.

Should you crash, the car will automatically send out a phone call for help. It will even use GPS and cell towers to triangulate your position so that emergency services will know exactly where you are. The car will even speak the language of the emergency hotline operator, so language is not a barrier at all. We can expect to see Sync Emergency Assistance in Ford cars next year, when it starts saving lives.

How many times have you been in traffic and wished you could play Mario Kart in real life? Well, French humorist Rémi Gaillard actually did just that. He played Super Mario Kart in real life by driving a go-cart through city traffic while disguised as Mario. I wish I could have seen it firsthand.

And yes, he even tosses banana peels at other cars and drivers and even collects power-ups. Eventually some French motorcycle cops catch up to him, so don’t try this yourself.

The card is designed by Peter Miller for cyclists. Just hurl it at the offending car and it will stick, without causing an accident. Later, the driver will feel bad. Rightfully so.

Star Trek home automation system is awesome

Posted in Sci-Fi by Conner Flynn on November 28th, 2010

Star Trek nerds everywhere will be telling their number one’s to make it so, while doing number two in their pants after seeing this. This might be the coolest home automation center ever. Obviously it was created by a serious Trekkie.

It’s custom-built to be just like Star Trek’s LCARS user interface. Sadly, the rest of his house doesn’t look like the Enterprise, so he probably spends all of his time in this one room, which may or may not include a fish named Livingston.
