Sony working on downloadable comic service for PSPLooks like SCEE is prototyping a new addition to the PSP PlayStation Store. According to a tipster, Sony is planning a service that will let you download digital comics directly to your PSP. Survey participants were asked to watch the video below and to help determine a pricing scheme: subscription or a la carte prices.

Digital comics aren’t new to the PSP, like the Metal Gear Solid comics for instance. The interactive comics were enhanced with slight animation, music and even sound effects. The PlayStation Store currently only has one digital comic available for download: The Cryptics, which will cost you $2.99.

Audio-Technica's PSP & DSi friendly headphonesDo you use stock headphones instead of a high quality pair when you play on your portable? If you are looking for a high quality pair, Audio Technica has introduced a new series of 4 headphones specially designed for portables, specifically the PSP and DS/DSi.

The ATH-EQ300G, ATH-C100G, ATH-C500G and ATH-CK300G will allow you to control the volume from the headphones themselves instead of using hardware or software controls. They also have a unique and hopefully comfortable shape. We don’t have a price yet, but they’ll be available in April in Japan.

Posted in Nintendo by Shane McGlaun on March 12th, 2009

nintendodsship-sbWhen it comes to pure portable gaming consoles there are two choices — the Sony PSP and the Nintendo DS. You can play games on other devices on the go, like the iPhone and iPod touch, but the DS and PSP are the only dedicated portable gaming systems.

Nintendo has announced that it has now shipped 100 million Nintendo DS consoles since the systems were introduced. The original DS launched in 2004 and offered dual screens and voice recognition, something not offered on other portable consoles.

Citroen C-Crosser PSP Edition SUVHere’s something that’s slightly messed up. But it’s the kind of thing that carmakers must do in order to sell to Sony loving geeks. A PSP Edition SUV. Citroen is offering their C-Crosser SUV which boldly boasts a PSP sticker that lets everyone know your handheld of choice.

Each purchase comes with some “freebies” including a black PSP (Probably not the new PSP-3000), a couple of games, a 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo and a head mount that lets folks view UMD movies on the PSP while the driver drives.

PSP 2 won’t have a UMD drive

Posted in PSP by Conner Flynn on February 25th, 2009

New PSP to be a slider?According to Acclaim developer David Perry, the new Playstation Portable won’t feature a UMD disc drive.

“I hear Sony FINALLY has the PSP 2. And thank goodness, they’ve removed the stupid battery-sucking UMD disc drive. I’m excited!” Perry wrote on both his Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Whether or not he has actually seen the rumored new Playstation Portable himself is not clear. He may just be hearing rumors through the development community. Ditching the UMD wouldn’t be a surprise as it would cut costs and make the device slimmer. It fits with the other rumor, that the new PSP will be a slider, but have the same guts as its predecessor.

PlayStation Network accounts reach milestone

Posted in Sony by Shane McGlaun on February 25th, 2009

Sony PlayStation NetworkThe Sony PS3 is one of the most popular game consoles on the market. One of the best things about the console for me is that I can use it as a Blu-ray player in addition to a gaming system. I also believe that it is one of the best Blu-ray players around thanks to the continual updates Sony adds to the Blu-ray player via downloads.

Another nice thing about the PS3 is the PlayStation Network and Sony says that the network has reached a significant milestone. After being available for two years and three months the network has exceeded 20 million registered accounts worldwide.

Sony announces Lilac PSP, Hannah Montana and Assassin’s Creed packsIf you haven’t found a PSP color to suit you, you might want to try a female color, like this new Lilac PSP aimed at girl gamers.

This Lilac PSP will debut as part of a $199 Hannah Montana Entertainment Pack that features Miley Cyrus’ PSP game, a UMD with some Hannah Montana episodes, a 2GB memory stick, and some stickers. What about us males? An Assassin’s Creed Entertainment Pack will launch with Altair’s PSP debut later in the year with “other content that will announced later.”

New PSP to be a slider?

Posted in PSP by Conner Flynn on February 23rd, 2009

New PSP to be a slider? What are the odds? There’s a rumor floating around on the internet. And it involves the PSP. That’s never happened before… Sarcasm aside, this latest rumor predicts an actual lustworthy design that includes a sliding screen and yet no new hardware inside.

If true, that means it’ll have the exact same internal guts as your current model, it will just be more cellphone-like. On one hand, i’d be glad they upped the design and payed attention to various fan renders like the one above, but what good does that do you if the innards don’t match?

Posted in Jakks Pacific by Shane McGlaun on February 23rd, 2009

EyeClops Mini ProjectorWe talked a bit about the EyeClops Mini Projector earlier this month. You may recognize the EyeClops name as a line of high-tech toys for older kids that includes a cool set of night vision goggles and a microscope.

When we first spoke of the projector, the pricing was stated at under $100. Today Jakks Pacific announced the official pricing of the projector of $99.99, a whole penny under $100. Jakks is still not giving us a specific launch date for the projector.

50 million PSPs sold worldwide

Posted in PSP by Conner Flynn on February 13th, 2009

50 million PSPs sold worldwideSony claims to have sold 50 million PSP handhelds worldwide as of January 2009. That number includes all PSP-1000, 2000, and 3000 devices sold since December 2004. That’s a pretty impressive number, for sure.

But not so much if you’re sitting in Nintendo’s corporate offices, looking at 96.22 million DS handhelds sold between December 2004 and December 2008. I guess since they can’t brag about how many PS3 units have been sold, they have to have something to give them hope.

Review: In Your Face iPhone Holder

Review: In Your Face iPhone HolderA while back we told you about the iFlyz iPhone holder, designed to hold your iPhone during long flights. It’s a great idea for sure, but you have to question the whole suction cup idea. You don’t want to trust your expensive gadget to a suction cup.

That’s where the In Your Face iPhone holder comes in. It does pretty much the same thing, for the same price, just in a much safer way as there is no suction cup involved. Instead it uses a much stronger spring-loaded iPhone clamp. I’m happy to report that it does it’s job well and has multiple uses while you keep your hands free.

PSP hits Europe with trio of new colors

PSP hits Europe with trio of new colorsTimes are tough and Sony knows that if it wants to sell PSPs(Believe me they want to sell some badly) they had better try some new tricks to entice buyers. And what could make the consumer want you more? Sony thinks that it’s all in the colors.

Sony is releasing the European PSP in three new colors to compliment the Carnival Colors we covered just a week ago. You’ll be able to get your PSP in Radiant Red, Mystic Silver and Pearl White. They might be trying a little too hard. Those color names sound like stripper names for Eighty-year-olds. In fact, I’m pretty sure Pearl White starred on The Golden Girls.

Sony’s 4th quarter profits down 95 percent

Posted in Sony by Conner Flynn on January 29th, 2009

Sony’s 4th quarter profits down 95 percentIt isn’t any secret that things are tough all over. Every company out there is hurting, but Sony’s 4th quarter numbers are really bad. We’re talking a 95% drop in profits.

They managed to pull in only 10.4 billion yen during the 4th quarter, having done 200.2 billion yen the previous year. The numbers tell you that the holiday season was a complete bust for Sony. TVs, PS3s and PSPs just weren’t on people’s lists. The fault lies with you and I, who did not buy/want Sony products.

Sony PSPs in carnival colors for Japan

Posted in Sony by Shane McGlaun on January 26th, 2009

Sony PSP Carnival ColorsI have a couple PSPs lying around my house and both of them are boring, shiny black devices. Sure, you can get silver PSP here in the states, but that’s not really any better than black. What I really want is a PSP with a bright color like Nintendo offers with its DS portable.

Sony is offering portable gamers in Japan the option of four new and very bright colors for their gaming enjoyment. The bright shades are called Carnival colors and the machines can be had in blue, red, green, and yellow.
