Sony introduces new PSP system bundles

Posted in PSP by Reuben Drake on June 28th, 2011

Sony will be offering some special PSP bundles in Japan this summer. I guess it’s their way of giving it a proper sendoff. The PSP-3000 “value pack” includes a PSP bundled with some color-matched accessories, like a 2GB Memory Stick Pro Duo, an AC adapter, a 1,200mAh battery, a pouch, and a wiping cloth.

The bundle comes in three colors: Piano Black, Vibrant Blue, and Pink Blossom. The price is 17,800 yen (or about $220). It will be available in Japan on July 28. No word on whether we will get it or not.

Sony sells 70 million PSP units worldwide

Posted in PSP by Conner Flynn on June 6th, 2011

We are all waiting to buy Sony’s Playstation Vita, but let’s not forget about the PSP, which has been a flagship device for Sony since December 12, 2004. It has accumulated a total of 70 million sales globally. That’s the number being bandied about at E3.

That sounds amazing doesn’t it? Well, sadly it is nowhere near the 100 million DS units that Nintendo had shipped back in 2009. That total includes the original PSP-1000, the PSP-2000, the PSP-3000 and the PSP go. But perhaps the Vita will add some impressive numbers to hit Mario in his plumber pants.

After trialing a used game program in 600 locations last year around the country, 7-Eleven is rolling used game sales out to 3000 stores around the country. The used games are sold in conjunction with Game Trading Technologies.

Turquoise, Lilac and Pink PSP-3000s to hit Europe in November

Posted in PSP by Conner Flynn on August 18th, 2009

Sony announces Lilac PSP, Hannah Montana and Assassin's Creed packsAt GamesCom 2009, Sony announced plans to bring three new PSP-3000 colors to Europe. The new colors are “Turquoise” blue, “Lilac” purple, and “Blossom” pink. We already know about the lilac PSP. The other two are new colors (not colors from the carnival colors that were released earlier this year).

The turquoise PSP will come bundled with LittleBigPlanet, while the lilac PSP will be bundled with Hannah Montana, just like in the US. This news should make European girls absolutely giddy this November.

White PSP Assasin’s Creed Bloodlines bundle, $199

White PSP Assasin's Creed Bloodlines bundle, $199Check this out. Apparently UMD isn’t dead just yet. Cold and possibly maggot ridden, but not quite dead. Sony just let loose some details on the Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines PSP Entertainment Pack. You’ll get the ghostly white PSP-3000 and 2GB Memory Stick PRO Duo, plus an unnamed feature film on UMD. For $199.

Weird huh? Even with the PSPgo, Sony is still trying to unload movies on UMD. The proprietary format that no one wants or supports. Will they ever learn? What are they thinking?

PSP Go forces you to buy all-new accessories

Posted in PSP Go! by Conner Flynn on June 8th, 2009

PSP Go forces you to buy all-new accessoriesSony has a bunch of accessories that will be available for PSP Go when it hits US shelves on October 1. The usual stuff, like cases, wrist straps, Sony-branded screen protectors etc. Problem is the handheld doesn’t have a standard mini USB port like the PSP-3000, so you will have to buy all new accessories.

The PSP Go has a new multifunction port on its base that is used for everything, whether it’s data transfer, charging or video output. Asking owners of the older model to change a USB cable would have been fine, we think. But the fact that components like A/V cables, voice headsets and pretty much anything made to work with the 3000, are completely incompatible is a real slap in the face to PSP owners.

Citroen C-Crosser PSP Edition SUV

Citroen C-Crosser PSP Edition SUVHere’s something that’s slightly messed up. But it’s the kind of thing that carmakers must do in order to sell to Sony loving geeks. A PSP Edition SUV. Citroen is offering their C-Crosser SUV which boldly boasts a PSP sticker that lets everyone know your handheld of choice.

Each purchase comes with some “freebies” including a black PSP (Probably not the new PSP-3000), a couple of games, a 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo and a head mount that lets folks view UMD movies on the PSP while the driver drives.

50 million PSPs sold worldwide

Posted in PSP by Conner Flynn on February 13th, 2009

50 million PSPs sold worldwideSony claims to have sold 50 million PSP handhelds worldwide as of January 2009. That number includes all PSP-1000, 2000, and 3000 devices sold since December 2004. That’s a pretty impressive number, for sure.

But not so much if you’re sitting in Nintendo’s corporate offices, looking at 96.22 million DS handhelds sold between December 2004 and December 2008. I guess since they can’t brag about how many PS3 units have been sold, they have to have something to give them hope.
