Sony warns that counterfeit PS3 controllers can explode

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 26th, 2010

Sony says that counterfeit PlayStation 3 controllers can be unstable, as in they might blow up in your hands. Or wherever it may be. Sony made an announcement to consumers, telling them not to take the risk of buying counterfeit products as it could cause them serious injury.

According to the company, counterfeit PlayStation 3 controllers, “identical in appearance to genuine PlayStation 3 wireless controllers,” have started cropping up in the wild. The company said that the “quality, reliability, and safety of counterfeit products is uncertain.”

Sony launches PlayMemories app for 3D photos

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 22nd, 2010

If the recent 3.50 firmware update for your PS3 left you feeling like you need more 3D in your life, Sony has an extra treat for you. The company has announced their PlayMemories app.

The app will be available for download from the PlayStation Store in late September, letting you view both 2D and 3D photos captured with a 3D-compatible camera. Select a picture and zoom in or out using your DUALSHOCK®3 or SIXAXIS™ wireless controller. The app itself wasn’t shown yet, but we expect to see it pretty soon and see if it’s worth it or not.

PS3′s 3.5 update now live with 3D movies

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 21st, 2010

The Sony Playstation 3 3.50 update is now live. The new update adds 3D support for Blu-ray movies, not just the earlier game support. If you want to take advantage of the update, you’ll need a 3D-capable TV however, as well as active shutter 3D glasses and an HDMI 1.4 cable. That’s one expensive update if you want 3-D movies.

There’s also Facebook integration, allowing developers to incorporate more social networking into games. Another key feature in the upgrades is a Grief Reporting Function that allows users to report harassment through the Friends link in the XMB interface.

Red Dead Redemption goes undead

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on September 19th, 2010

Red Dead Redemption already had a whole bunch of monsters thanks to glitches that produced bird-people, a donkey woman and even cougar man. But now Rockstar is intentionally going to add more inhuman enemies in their next DLC.

This DLC is called Undead Nightmares, and will feature “an entirely new mostly single-player campaign that follows John Marston as he tries to find a cure for the highly infectious zombie plague that has spread across the frontier.”

Pink DualShock 3 coming September 21st

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 10th, 2010

The PS3 dualshock controllers are pretty manly looking. They look tough and we know that they are capable enough. But now Sony is rolling out another version. It’s the same old controller, but in a pink shade for the lady of the house.

Pricing is the usual $54.99 for this wireless controller and GameStop should have them in within a couple of weeks. It’s strong enough for a man, but clearly made for a woman.

Posted in Controllers,Games by Shane McGlaun on September 9th, 2010

Splitfish made a name for itself in the gaming world years ago when it unveiled the controllers for console gamers that allowed them to play games with a mouse controller for the right hand and controller for the right hand that looks like half a gamepad.

Splitfish has announced the street date for its next products for gamers. The products include the wireless Fragfx Shark and the wired Barracuda and FPS optimized wired Piranha controller. All three of the controllers will work with the PS3, Mac, and PC.

Classic White DualShock 3 appears

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 6th, 2010

The heavenly white PS3 Slim pictured above can be found in Japan, but the “Classic White” DualShock 3 beside it has just appeared for preorder at e-tailers in the US. We doubt very much that a white 160GB game system will follow this controller across the Pacific, but it also would not surprise us too much if Sony reveals one before these preorders ship on October 15th.

Because Sony already sells a “Ceramic White” controller, and as Engadget points out, unless you’re attempting to match colors, a single shade of white is generally all you need.

PS3 Jailbreak released to the public

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 1st, 2010

I’m sure Sony isn’t too happy about this news. The PSJailbreak claimed to allow users to backup their games to a hard drive recently, and now a hack called PSGroove has surfaced, which claims to be an open source PSjailbreak.

This time the code has to be downloaded and installed on an AT90USBkey or Teensy++ USB development board, then you homebrew sorts will be able to execute unsigned third-party apps and games on the PS3. The ability to boot ISO files is disabled for now, but we are sure that a workaround will be available soon.

Sony considering online pass for first party games

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on August 24th, 2010

Word is that Sony is considering an “online pass” program. Right now Sony already approves of third-party publishers like EA and THQ, charging used games buyers to play their games online, and according to Andrew House, president of Sony Europe, the company is actively seeking a similar solution for its first party titles.

House says “On the principle of making online portions of the game available or unlocked from the disc-based release for a fee, we’re broadly supportive of that,” How this will affect how people want to trade/sell their used games in the future is another issue entirely.

PlayStation 3 gets hacked by a USB-based modchip

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on August 22nd, 2010

The PS3 has been a tough nut to crack for hackers. Many have tried and failed, but now an Australian online store called OzModChips is claiming that they have a thumb drive that’s loaded with the world’s first PS3 Modchip.

The drive is available for a pre-order price of $169AUD which is about $150. I guess thats not a bad price to hack the device and copy games from discs and play pirated games. Not that we endorse that. It apparently works with any model of the PS3.

Xbox 360 commercial gets pulled for using PS3 footage

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on August 18th, 2010

It’s kind of funny that Microsoft’s ad agency thought they could get away with showing PS3 Final Fantasy XIII scenes, but that is just what happened. A very savvy British viewer dimed them out to the Advertising Standards Authority and the commercial was quickly pulled following a comparison of gameplay between the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.

The ASA said that “we noted that there was a discernible difference in the picture quality of the two—the PS3 image in video sequences appeared sharper and colors were more vivid than those of the Xxbox 360.” Duh.

PS3 goes Titanium Blue for Gran Turismo 5 bundle

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on August 18th, 2010

Gran Turismo 5 will launch in Japan and Europe on November 3. But the most shocking thing here is that Titanium blue PS3 shown above. That shockingly colorful console will come bundled with the racing game over in Japan this fall.

It will cost you ¥35,980 (or $421) for the Gran Turismo 5 Racing Pack, which will consist of a Limited Edition copy of the game plus a repainted PlayStation 3 slim with a 160GB hard drive.

Sony says developers are already working on PlayStation 4 games

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on August 17th, 2010

We don’t have many details, but according to a recent edition of Game Informer Australia, Sony has stated that developers are already getting games ready for the as yet unannounced PlayStation 4. Sony’s PlayStation 3 has been with us for several years now, so it’s entirely possible.

Speculation is that the next-generation console will arrive by 2012. It makes sense as developers need time to develop games way ahead of launch and they need to get familiar with the hardware. I guess we will see.
