Sony posts strong Q3 profits in PlayStation group

Posted in Sony by Conner Flynn on February 3rd, 2011

Despite a small 6% dip in quarterly sales year-over-year, “due to a decrease in sales in the game business resulting primarily from unfavorable foreign exchange rates,” Sony’s Networked Products & Services group, which houses the PlayStation brand, managed to post ¥45.7 billion (about $564 million) in profits for the third quarter period, which ended December 31. That’s a 135% gain over the prior-year’s period.

Even though quarterly sales of the PlayStation 3 and PSP have lagged year-over-year, Sony is predicting 15 million PS3 consoles sold for the fiscal year, compared to 13 million for the year prior. This has a lot to do with “cost reductions” on the PS3 and significant gains in PlayStation 3 software sales. So things are looking great for the PS3 right now. As for the PSP and PS2, not so much.

It isn’t free however. This cloud service will only be available to PlayStation Plus subscribers. If you are among those who subscribe to this, you can expect to get Online Saving with the upcoming 3.60 firmware update.

GameStop guesses that Sony PSP NGP will cost $999.99

Posted in PSP by Conner Flynn on January 27th, 2011

Sony’s Next Generation Portable (PSP2) has been called a PS3 for your pocket. It is codenamed the NGP. So how much does it cost? Sony has no answer to that yet, but GameStop has the device up for pre-order and they have a price in mind. The Sony NGP page on their website has an estimated price of $999.99.

They probably just want to make it look like it had a price cut the day it comes out. Sneaky. Sony hasn’t mentioned when they will be announcing the actual price, but with the device is scheduled for an end of year release.

Blaze PS3 Move Gun attachment

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on January 21st, 2011

Guns are fun to use with your favorite shooter game, but not when they are capped with a glowing ball. You will look silly more than tough while wielding this baby. It’s like somebody put chewing gum in the chamber and it blew a bubble.

This alternative to the $20 Sony PS3 Move gun attachment comes from Blaze and will cost you £9.99 (about $16) when it ships at the end of February, not to mention your dignity.

Activision considering closing PS3 Black Ops servers

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on January 19th, 2011

An Activision support representative has suggested that Activision may be considering or has considered the possibility of closing PS3 Black Ops servers due to problems reported by players. If you play Black Ops on the PS3, then you know those problems very well.

A refund petition was started last year and had 8,800 signatures after 5 weeks. Players are complaining of frame rate issues, disconnects, lagging and hard freezes and other problems. I don’t know about you, but I play all the time and while there are problems, I spend 99% of my time just playing and enjoying flawless games.

$40 PlayStation 3 removed from Target’s website

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on January 17th, 2011

Apparently some lucky folks may be getting a PlayStation 3 for just $39.99. We think. Of course word spread quickly about this promotion and thousands of orders must have been made while it was up. However, some 8 hours later, it was removed from the internet, replaced by an Error 404 page. It’s unclear if this was a mistake or a promotion, since Target and Amazon both listed the PlayStation 3 console for sale at $40. Our guess is a mistake, since $40 for a PS3 is just ridiculous.

But if you bought one, the PlayStation 3 console was legally purchased, so Target is bound to ship the console. And if that is accurate, the company is going to have some heavy losses because of this snafu.

PSP2 unveiling rumored for January 27

Posted in PSP by Conner Flynn on January 12th, 2011

We’ve been waiting for a long time and Sony may finally make the PSP2 public on January 27. A rumor from “trade sources” suggests that it will be shown at a special event in Tokyo. Publishers were reported by MCV as having known since late last year and would have had development kits for some time.

The company’s PlayStation head Kaz Hirai has already hinted that the system was in development and that it would combine touch and buttons. A full touchscreen along with a possible back touchpad and dual analog sticks might show up in the initial model. Sony is also planning a major jump in performance that might give performance closer to that of the PS3. The photo above is from an earlier leak and has changed since then to be a non-slider.

Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition goes 3D

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on January 12th, 2011

Want proof that 3D has jumped the shark? Are we still saying that? Whatever. Look, supermodels in bikinis are fine just how they are. There’s no need to add 3D. Even if they were naked, 3D would not improve it. But Sports Illustrated thinks it is a good idea.(or they actually know better, but are going to embrace the trend to sell issues)

SI plans to sell and rent special 3D video content that ties in with its annual swimsuit issue. The content will be available to customers who have new Sony Bravia HDTVs that are 3D-capable, and a PS3 or qualified Blu-ray player running Qriocity’s rental service. You could buy it for $8, or rent it for $5. Or just choose not to be a sucker.

Even hardcore soldiers and James Bond types like to play games on their PS3 during boring missions. And so they need a military grade case to keep it safe. That’s where Ben Heck comes in with this shrapnel-resistant PlayStation 3 suitcase.

If you love Dreamcast and own either a PS3 or an Xbox 360, we have some good news. SEGA is releasing its Dreamcast compilation to both platforms very soon. The price is an affordable $29.99 for the compilation. So you can play all of these classic games without dragging the old console out of the closet.

The titles and a date have yet to be released, so we hope it has a good selection for the price. Even if they only include some of the hits, it will be well worth it.
