Sony NGP not a mini PS3 after all

Posted in PSP by Conner Flynn on March 3rd, 2011

There has been a lot of talk about Sony’s upcoming portable being able to pack a PS3 punch and for awhile Sony just let us think that the device was that powerful, but now they have laid their cards on the table. David Coombes, a platform research manager put a quick end to the rumors.

He explained that although the NGP is equipped with a high-performance quad-core CPU theoretically capable of 2GHz, the clock speeds will have to be dialed down to preserve the PSP successor’s battery life and prevent it from running too hot. Otherwise it would last maybe 5 minutes and burn you. No one wants that. Sony wants hot sales, not burnt customers.

Netflix and free AT&T WiFi coming to 3DS this summer

Posted in Nintendo 3DS by Conner Flynn on March 2nd, 2011

At GDC 2011, Satoru Iwata and Reggie Fils-Aime revealed a ton of info about the 3DS. As far as video content, the news is that the 3DS will get Netflix this summer as well as the ability to pause a video on your handheld and continue watching on your Wii.

We aren’t sure but we assume that you can also do the same with an XBox or PS3 as well. Nintendo is partnering with AT&T to provide free WiFi access at 10,000 hotspots starting in late May. It will also use the SpotPass passive connection feature that works even when no game is in the system and when its in sleep mode, to download new content.

Sony outs DualShock 3 charging dock, candy blue gamepad

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on March 1st, 2011

Sony has unveiled a new addition to its PS3 accessories. The DualShock 3 Charging Station will charge up two DualShock 3 or Sixaxis controllers without having to plug into an actively running PS3. There’s no word from Sony on how quick the controllers charge, but cradling the gamepads needs an adapter for each gamepad. There’s one included in the box.

There’s also a new candy blue color version of the DualShock 3. Both will ship to Japan on April 21 for about $30 and $67. We don’t know if that new DualShock 3 will arrive in the US, but most PS3 accessories ship to the US after they hit Japan.

European customs ordered to seize PlayStation shipments

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on February 28th, 2011

You might recall that Sony and LG have been at each other’s throats lately. It involves allegations of patent infringement. Now Sony has a major setback in Europe because of this. The civil court of justice in the Hague has just granted LG a preliminary injunction that will have all new PlayStation 3s imported into Europe confiscated by customs for at least ten days.

Bad news for European gamers who just imported a console for sure. They are already being stockpiled in warehouses and the injunction could be extended even further. That would lead to a shortage of PS3s on store shelves. Right now retailers generally have two to three weeks worth of stock on hand.

Big Surprise, PlayStation hacker ban not working

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on February 22nd, 2011

Last week Sony said that those who hack their PlayStation 3 consoles would have their PlayStation Network access “terminated permanently.” Hackers didn’t care for that message or the tone. Now hackers have reportedly found a way to unban themselves and more than that, they can actually ban any other console they want.

However, to do this, the hackers need to know the unique ID assigned to the other console that they’ll be banning, so it might be more a case of swapping a “good” ID onto a “bad” console. We don’t have any more info, but keep your PS3 ID to yourself.

GAEMS Xbox 360 traveling case gets a price and release date

Posted in gaming accessories by Conner Flynn on February 20th, 2011

The last version of the GAEMS console-carrying case was pretty basic. It was neat, don’t get us wrong, but it was basically just a lunch box shaped suitcase for your console. Those of you who carry your Xbox 360 with you on the road will appreciate the company’s new case design.

It now supports both the fat and slim versions of the 360, not discriminating at all and it will even carry the PS3 Slim. There is now enough room to store the console, controllers and power brick. This new case also comes bundled with a remote, HDMI cable and power supply to power the speakers and LED screen.

Sony to ban players who hack or play pirated games on PS3

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on February 17th, 2011

I thought this was already the case, but I guess not. Sony has released a statement on their official PlayStation blog, stating that anyone who hacks the PlayStation 3 or runs unauthorized or pirated software will be permanently banned from the PlayStation Network and also won’t be able to use Qriocity services through the PlayStation 3.

Seems like they have had enough of people abusing their product. It likely won’t deter hackers who will just work harder to circumvent any measures they put in place.

Killzone 3 PS3 game leaked online before release

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on February 14th, 2011

We’ve all been waiting for Killzone 3 to arrive. The game looks amazing and should outdo Killzone 2 in sales and overall awesomeness. But now 41.4GB worth of files have been leaked to Torrent sites containing Guerrilla Games’ upcoming first-person shooter for the PlayStation 3.

The game isn’t due to be released until Feb. 22nd. That’s a problem obviously. But it isn’t all bad news for Sony. Only hacked PS3 consoles will be able to play the game. The 41.4GB file contains the European version of the game and a rumored second non-3D version is making the rounds at roughly half the size.

Samsung HDTVs getting updated version of the Netflix Watch Instantly interface

Posted in Netflix by Conner Flynn on February 12th, 2011

Those of us with a PS3 have had the new Netflix interface for a while, but now Samsung HDTVs are getting the updated version of the Netflix Watch Instantly interface. The latest interface appeared after a firmware upgrade on a UN46C6500 LCD HDTV.

Now you can search through Netflix’s catalog directly on the device, but you still won’t be able to add DVDs to your queue. There’s no official word on this yet, so it might be a test phase or a slow rollout, so it might not appear right away.

Sony releases Filmy movie viewing app for the PlayStation 3

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on February 9th, 2011

Sony has just released a PS3 app for those people who watch a lot of video using the PS3. The new app is called Filmy and is designed to organize and play videos recorded in the AVCHD (H.264) format and can be accessed from the PS3’s hard drive or from a device attached through a USB cable.

If the videos are geotagged, users will be able to see where they were taken and sort them by date. The Filmy app is available in the media section of the PlayStation Store. The trial version is free, but it will only be fully functional for 15-minutes, after which you’ll need to pay $5 to access the full features.

PDP, a company known for all kinds of gaming gear, has unveiled the Marvel Versus Fighting Pad. It’s a wired joypad with micro-switches for the thumb stick and six front-facing buttons. Hopefully it will improve your game.

It will be available on February 14 for $40. They only have an Xbox 360 model planned right now, but if it sells well, they will be offering a PS3 version. That artwork you see is an actual panel from a Marvel comic.

LG wants the PS3 taken off store shelves

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on February 8th, 2011

Lawsuits. It’s how large companies throw punches at each other. In the latest lawsuit news, LG has asked the International Trade Commission (ITC) to block the sale of PlayStation 3 consoles in the US due to a patent dispute.

According to LG, many of Sony’s BRAVIA TVs, Blu-ray players, and the PS3 itself infringes on four patents held by the Korean company. The complaints about the PS3 have to do with “a way of dealing with multiple data streams, such as different camera angles, as well as a system to reproduce data that’s stored on a read-only device.” If the ITC finds in LG’s favor, it does have the power to bar the PS3 from sale in the United States, though this is rarely enforced in such cases.

CircBoard is a great way to type on an Xbox

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on February 7th, 2011

Entering text on say the PS3 or Xbox is a pain. Especially in game. The Circboard can improve typing on a game console. The system splits the letters into segments that can be selected with the left analog stick on an Xbox 360 controller with the right analog stick selecting the specific letter.

Shoulder bumpers are the space and backspace keys, while the left trigger handles caps. It’s just a demo still, but they hope to get the system implemented in a variety of games and apps, so they are looking for investors.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play finally gets official

Posted in Sony Ericsson by Conner Flynn on February 6th, 2011

We have some new news on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. It is at last official. In fact, the Xperia Play will be one of the first devices announced at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Check out that beautiful front shot of the Gingerbread-running smartphone. Isn’t she lovely? She’s packing all the power of a PS3 in a nice tight body. Yeah, she’s a looker alright. I’d make her official too if I were Sony Ericsson. Reeeaaaal official….Gigitty.
