Polaroid gets into the video game business

Posted in Polaroid by Conner Flynn on April 28th, 2010

Polaroid is a name that has long been associated with instant cameras. But now, headsets and battery packs for the Xbox 360, a dock for the Nintendo DS, sports packs and sensor bars for the Wii, and even controllers for the PS3 are being worked on by Polaroid.

Maybe next we’ll see a Polaroid camera peripheral for the Wii, so you can snap shots of your game and add them to your scrapbook. Hey, they have to make money somehow right?

PS3 firmware 3.30 adds remote play from PC, bitstream audio options

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on April 25th, 2010

Aside from additional trophy sorting and 3D gaming readiness, the latest v3.30 system update has a few surprises in store. There’s a toggle for Bitstream Direct (output audio with the original digital signal prioritized) or Mix (mixed with sound effects such as button sounds and then converted to bitstream format) on Blu-ray movies. Future VAIO PC owners can even use remote play without any PSP intermediary.

Some other, unconfirmed reports include updated Flash compatibility, enhanced region free Blu-ray movie playback.

PS3 owners can watch live Major League Baseball, for a price

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on April 22nd, 2010

It’s not just 3D gaming that’s coming to the PS3. Major League Baseball will be streamed live to consoles by the end of this week, but don’t get your hopes up for free baseball. It will cost you.

How much? We’re talking $100 for the standard package, or $120 for the premium one. We don’t yet know what the difference is. MLB.TV subscribers will also have access to back games. It might be worth it to die-hard fans, but otherwise many of us will pass.

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on April 20th, 2010

When I think of 7-eleven stores, I think of gas, Big Gulp’s and Slurpees. The stores have all sorts of stuff that you might want for your daily travels. 7-Eleven locations are now unveiling a new offering.

After trialing a used game program in 600 locations last year around the country, 7-Eleven is rolling used game sales out to 3000 stores around the country. The used games are sold in conjunction with Game Trading Technologies.

Eminent iTrio connects two HDMI devices wirelessly

Posted in Home Theater by Shane McGlaun on April 19th, 2010

I like my home theater, but I hate all the wires behind the entertainment center. It would be even worse if I were trying to hang the TV on the wall. A company called Eminent has announced a new device called the iTrio that wirelessly streams HDTV content.

The system has a sender and a receiver and can stream video from two different HDMI sources. That means you can use it for your PS3 and your cable box that connect via HDMI. The device can stream full 1080p resolution feeds.

PlayStation Network Updates now move to Tuesdays

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on April 16th, 2010

Right now, Xbox Live releases content like new downloadable games on Tuesdays while PSN doesn’t offer content until Thursday. But in May, Sony will now move weekly updates to Tuesdays to compete with Microsoft.

Now you’ll be able to get content as soon as your Xbox friends so you can stick your tongue out at them and act all superior. Or if not superior at least equal. Take that Microsoft.

Sony PlayTV getting Facebook

Posted in Sony by Conner Flynn on April 15th, 2010

Sony PlayTV, the digital TV tuner/DVR for PS3 that is not available in the US, is getting some “great new features,”. That doesn’t mean squat to you and I. But, if you’re in England, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, or the UAE, it means Facebook integration.

There are also some “other great enhancements,” but sadly the company is not talking about those yet. We should find out “later this year,” according to James Thorpe, PlayStation Network Product Manager.

Analyst predicts $299 slim Xbox 360/Project Natal bundle this year

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on April 14th, 2010

It doesn’t seem like much of a prediction, but Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter foresees a new slim Xbox 360 hardware configuration before 2011 rolls around. More specifically he thinks that the new slim version will feature a 250GB hard drive with Project Natal bundled with it, without any price reduction or increase.

That means you would be getting the bundle for the $299 price point. Unless of course, Sony lowers the price of the PS3. Then it may go down to compete with Sony.

USB SNES controller with an Accelerometer

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on April 11th, 2010

Imagine if the old SNES controllers had accelerometers inside. You won’t have to imagine any more. Someone with some extra time on the hands has done it. This controller has been programmed to play Portal. You can watch a video of the controller in action here.

Obviously it can be programmed to play other modern games as well. Pretty neat. I can think of a few PS3 games I’d like to try it with.

PS3 owners may get cash back after OtherOS uninstall

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on April 9th, 2010

Even if you don’t run an alternative operating system on your PS3 you could potentially be getting some money under consumer protection laws. Apparently, Iapetus at the NeoGAF forums took the issue up with Amazon (who sold him the PS3), quoting a European consumer protection law that states all products bought must be “fit for the purpose which the consumer requires them and which was made known to the seller at the time of purchase,” netting him £84 ($130) in the process.

He didn’t have to return his PS3, nor be within warranty. Might be worth talking about with your retailer, if you still have the receipt. This particular law will only apply to you if you live in Europe. We aren’t sure if there are any similar laws in the US.

Hori slaps an LCD on your PS3

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on April 6th, 2010

Hori’s HP3-87 adds an 11.6-inch screen to your PS3 using a wraparound structure. It includes stereo speakers, two headphone jacks, and composite or component input options. The resolution is 1,366 x 768, so it will handle the 16:9 signal with its 500:1 contrast ratio, 7ms response time, and 200 nits of brightness.

Those in Tokyo can get it on May 27, when the HP3-87 goes on sale for ¥26,040 ($276). We aren’t sure when it will have an international release, but hopefully soon, so we can get our PS3s portable too.

Sony PS3 update 3.21 removes “Other OS” feature

Posted in Sony by Shane McGlaun on March 29th, 2010

I have had a PS3 since the console launched and I have seen the other OS feature on the machine several times, but I have never used it. I bet that most of you are the same way.

If you do use the other OS feature for some reason you have a decision to make. Sony has Announced that the latest firmware update that is set to hit this week will eliminate the Other OS feature.

Netflix Discs for Wii Arrive in Homes

Posted in Netflix,Wii by Darrin Olson on March 27th, 2010

Netflix instant streaming discs for the Nintendo Wii started arriving in homes today to the delight of many Wii console owners. The service allows Wii owners who subscribe to at least the minimum $9/month plan with Netflix, to watch select streaming movies and television shows direct to their televisions.

Netflix subscribers keep the disc and must have it inserted in the console any time they would like to watch streaming content, while movies sent through mail will continue as they have in the past. Once the disc is inserted and selected from the Wii home menu, an activation code is presented. Users must enter this code on the Netflix website as a one-time activation to enable the streaming service.

Xbox 360 gets slim motherboard

Posted in Xbox 360 Elite by Conner Flynn on March 17th, 2010

The image above apparently shows a new model of the Xbox 360. For the first time the console combines the CPU and the GPU in a single chip and it’s smaller. Testing has recently been completed in China. It’s not just a new board for the existing hardware, it’s supposedly a total redesign of the console, like the PS3 Slim.

This remains rumor for now, so take it with a grain of salt, but it makes sense with Natal launching later this year. And since the PS3 slimmed down, the XBox 360 would want to shed some pounds as well.
