Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on November 22nd, 2009

All PS3 units will be firmware upgradeable to 3DLooks like it won’t be long before you are gaming on the PS3 with 3D technology. According to Sony, your current PS3 can support 3D with a firmware update. Sony wants into the 3D market and they are not just dipping a toe in either.

They will be offering 3D tools to developers making games on its platform. Not sure if we’ve heard anything about what Nintendo and Microsoft plan to do about 3D technology, but now that Sony has weighed in, they will likely speak up soon. The Xbox 360 could probably take the firmware route as well.

Now this is just a rumor right now. A very thin rumor. A rumor about a possibility. That’s all we know. But how many PS3 owners would welcome the Firefox experience on their console? We’re guessing quite a lot.

Posted in Netflix by Conner Flynn on November 15th, 2009

Sony adds Netflix streaming to BRAVIA setsWell if you don’t have a home theater Netflix streaming option yet, but own an internet-connected Sony BRAVIA TV, Netflix just went live. Just as they promised back in July. You’ll be watching your favorite flicks in no time now.

All you have to do is apply the latest software update and you’re ready to go. What will it be? A drama? Action movie? Comedy? Comedy is PS3 owners having to use a “DVD” to get Netflix working on their console. Feel free to laugh at them.

Sony VGP-BMS80 VAIO Bluetooth Laser MouseSony’s VGP-BMS80 VAIO Bluetooth Laser Mouse features technology that is a little more serious than a typical mouse. This guy will give you wireless control of your PS3 or PC as long as it’s within range.

An optical sensor on top lets you use the mouse in the air like a trackpad, making it great for presentations. I guess you could say that this is the Vaio version of a wii-mote. It will cost you $80.

PS3 update adding Facebook inbound

Posted in Sony by Shane McGlaun on November 12th, 2009

ps3facebook-sgSome screen shots of a new update for the PS3 that shows Facebook running on the console have tipped up in Europe. Facebook has been available on the Xbox 360 for a while but hasn’t been offered on other consoles.

I guess Sony is finally tired of Xbox offering things that the PS3 doesn’t. Now that the PS3 has Netflix and will be getting Facebook; the Xbox has two reasons less to buy it rather than the PS3. There is no word on when exactly the update will hit.

Netflix PS3 streaming now live

Posted in Netflix by Shane McGlaun on November 10th, 2009

netflix-ps3-disc-reservationWe talked earlier this month about the announcement that the PS3 would be getting Netflix streaming service. Today marks the official live date for the PS3 Netflix deal. If you were wondering how Netflix got around that deal with Microsoft, Blu-ray is the answer.

The Blu-ray disc that has to be in the PS3 at all times uses BD-Live to access the Netflix streaming catalog. As long as the disc is in the PS3, you can stream until your heart’s content. The service is free to all Netflix members, but you have to request one of the discs.

Nintendo denies Wii HD in 2010

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on November 9th, 2009

Wii HD with new controller in 2011?We had been hoping for a Wii HD in 2010 or 2011 and it looked like it was a possibility. But sadly Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime says that this is not the case. There will be no Wii HD with Blu-ray player and 1080p.

Wait. If they don’t want to compete, does this mean they are getting out of the gaming business? My Wii has been collecting dust for about a year. They need to do something with the 360’s Natal and the PS3’s motion-wand on the way very soon.

Netflix Streaming coming soon to PS3

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on October 26th, 2009

Netflix Streaming coming soon to PS3You’ve been praying for it and now at long last Netflix streaming will be available “later this year” on the PS3. Just like the Xbox 360, it will be free with the $8.99-a-month plan. But with the PS3, you’ll enable Netflix via an “instant streaming Blu-ray disc.”

The free disc will activate Netflix via BD-Live. You’ll have to load up the disc every time you want to use Netflix for now. You’ll be able to order movies and do all of the other stuff right on screen without having to do it on your computer first.

He’s doubtful that it will ever be built-in but he tells Gizmodo that an external Blu-ray drive will be an option. He doesn’t go into detail but is unexpectedly confident that the hardware is enroute.

Company spokespeople asked about it wouldn’t confirm or deny, but do say that immediate plans focus on 1080p streaming video through the upcoming Zune Video Marketplace on the Xbox.
