3DS gets outsold by PSP in Japan

Posted in PSP by Reuben Drake on April 8th, 2011

Nintendo’s 3DS was released in Japan on February 26th and it has been selling great hitting the top of the sales charts. How could it’s sales possibly be surpassed? By the PSP, that’s how. According to Media Create the PSP sold 58,075 units in the week of March 28th to April 3rd, while the 3DS sold 42,979.

So what’s going on? It’s due in large part to the PSP dating sim Amagami, which is an old PS2 game that’s just been re-released for the handheld. Turns out they really love that old game more than 3D.

Sony PS2 handheld mod looks awesome

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on February 24th, 2011

This PS2 handheld looks pretty amazing. It was created by modder techknott. Sadly this PlayStation 2 handheld was made for a client, not for you or I. Interestingly, as good as this thing looks, it doesn’t have a built-in battery pack. (It cuts down on cost).

Still, it’s pretty awesome and very mobile. And downright sexy as far as PS2′s go. Techknott did a great job. If you ask nicely, he might even make you one of these bad boys.

Sony posts strong Q3 profits in PlayStation group

Posted in Sony by Conner Flynn on February 3rd, 2011

Despite a small 6% dip in quarterly sales year-over-year, “due to a decrease in sales in the game business resulting primarily from unfavorable foreign exchange rates,” Sony’s Networked Products & Services group, which houses the PlayStation brand, managed to post ¥45.7 billion (about $564 million) in profits for the third quarter period, which ended December 31. That’s a 135% gain over the prior-year’s period.

Even though quarterly sales of the PlayStation 3 and PSP have lagged year-over-year, Sony is predicting 15 million PS3 consoles sold for the fiscal year, compared to 13 million for the year prior. This has a lot to do with “cost reductions” on the PS3 and significant gains in PlayStation 3 software sales. So things are looking great for the PS3 right now. As for the PSP and PS2, not so much.

Reaching two million downloads in a year is quite a feat when you are talking about apps from a TV maker and it’s the largest number we’ve seen from a TV maker as well. Today Samsung’s app store is available in over 120 countries and features roughly 380 applications, 259 of which are totally free.

It also helps that they have already sold tons of Smart TVs and plan to ship 12 million more in 2011 alone. Samsung definitely has a good thing going here.
