Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on July 5th, 2011

Royal College of Art graduate Ki Hyun Kim must really like coffee. He designed the Alternative Alarm Clock, which allows you to wake up to the smell of coffee instead of beeping sounds that make you want to throw your clock.

The Alternative Alarm Clock is also a combination alarm/power strip, allowing you to plug in any electrical device you want like a lamp or a radio. When the alarm is activated, the electric outlet supplies power to the electrical devices.

We have so many gadgets and so few outlets that directly accommodate them. Thankfully more of these USb wall outlets are showing up to make our lives easier. The U-Socket USB wallplug is a fully working outlet with two USB ports added.

With this outlet you could just plug your USB device right into the wall for a quick charge. Obviously you or an electrician have to install it, but once that’s done, viola, easy charging! The U-Socket is $24.99 at ThinkGeek.

Aluratek Mini Surge Dual USB Charging Station

Posted in Chargers by Conner Flynn on June 6th, 2011

The alluring folks at Aluratek have a new surge protector that will fit into your outlet and won’t block the outlet below it. You gotta love that. It solves a common problem we have all shared. The device will protect your hardware from surges and it will allow you to directly connect some of the USB charging gear using the factory cables rather than having to plug in a USB adapter.

It goes by the name AUCS05F Mini Surge Dual USB Charging Station and it hangs from the outlet rather than having a cord and a rectangular surge strip like most protectors. There’s a three-prong AC outlet on the front and then one more on each side for three outlets in one.

Mad Catz’ exclusive Xbox 360 wireless headphones

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on June 5th, 2011

You might remember that Mad Catz scored the exclusive rights to produce Xbox 360 wireless headphones not long ago. Well here they are here and apparently they don’t need to be tethered to your controller for voice chat or plugged into a wall to charge. The new Mad Catz Warhead 7.1 gets everything it needs from a base station connected to your console. Using USB and optical cables directly from the Xbox 360 to the tower shown above, and it will supposedly deliver enough 5.8GHz bandwidth for virtual Dolby surround sound on four pairs of headphones at once — plus wireless Xbox LIVE audio chat. Pretty awesome.

The USB base station will also give you an on-screen battery readout, and there’s a second swappable battery pack in the base station’s charger. It will be under $300 this holiday season.

Splitfish FragFX Shark for Xbox 360

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on May 24th, 2011

Splitfish is bringing its PC and PS3 mouse controller to the Xbox. However this version needs a wired Xbox 360 gamepad to act as an intermediary between itself and the console. Seems an odd design choice. The wired controller plugs into the Shark’s wireless USB dongle, while the “fragchuck” and mouse are completely free of wires.

It doesn’t sound like a setup that I would want to deal with but if you want to give it a try, it will be available in late August.

The inductive-charging backplate for the HTC Thunderbolt has just hit the FCC, so keeping your battery-devouring gadget charged up will soon get a whole lot easier. Right now you have to plug several times a day just to keep it all juiced up, but soon you’ll be able to just rest it on a charging mat.

We don’t know when it will arrive, but hopefully it will be soon as it would make our lives a bit easier.

Google Video Shutdown Stopped For Now

Posted in Google by Conner Flynn on April 25th, 2011

Google had decided to pull the plug on Google Video, but now it seems that the company has had a change of heart and has put that plan on hold. They are telling users that they are looking for “an easier way” to migrate all of those videos to YouTube.

Originally, Google gave users a choice between downloading these videos or Uploading them to YouTube before it erased them for good, but now they plan to automatically transfer content to YouTube themselves. Seems like that should have been the way to go from the start. Well at least you can rest easy as your videos should live to see another day.

Toshiba has introduced a new pocket camcorder. The Camileo BW10 is its first waterproof video camera and is capable of being submerged in up to 6.5 feet of water. The BW10 is also built rugged for when on land as well.

It takes 1080p MPEG-4 video and five-megapixel stills with a light-sensitive CMOS sensor, an f2.8 lens, and boasts image stabilization. This one uses a micro USB connector instead of a direct USB plug and has bundled software to help upload your videos to YouTube.

The PSP Go is officially dead

Posted in PSP Go! by Conner Flynn on April 20th, 2011

We told you yesterday that Sony had stopped making the PSP Go. Well, now it is official. They have pulled the plug. Sony Japan has confirmed that it has ceased production of the PSP Go and that all future sales will be limited to current stock.

We can’t say we are heartbroken. It was a bad idea from the word Go. This move will allow Sony to shift its focus to the NGP, which is expected to ship in at least one country by the end of this year. Focus is good. It leads to good consoles. It is the right move.

The re-purposed canister of 35mm film now holds 4GB of storage. The 4GB flash drive retails for $23.99, there is also the 2GB option for $18.99.
