Playstation Move gets iFixit teardown

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 20th, 2010

As usual, the folks over at iFixit have wasted no time doing their latest autopsy, this time on the Playstation Move. The teardown yielded two surprises. The motion controller is very easy to dismantled compared with most devices.

They also discovered that the Move includes many components that are typically included in smartphones. It has an accelerometer and a gyroscope, but also a full processor, a vibrating motor, Bluetooth and a compass.

If you choose the right shipping method and order today you may even get it in your hands before the 19th. Amazon also has the $399.99 PlayStation 3 320GB with Move Bundle, $49.99 Move Controller, and $29.96 Move Navigation Controller ready for purchase. The move is on the move.

MoveMen, Heroes of the PlayStation Move

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 14th, 2010

Well, this is a bit odd. In an attempt to make you a fan of the PlayStation Move, Sony has introduced these two bubble headed dudes? They are called the MoveMen and they are stars of a new PlayStation Move ad push.

The campaign is directed by FilmFaktisk’s Lars Åndheim and looks like it is limited to Norway. They apparently fight crime with their glowing bubble heads, with PSmove controllers holstered at their side. It’s all rather silly.

Sony launches yaybuttons.com

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 12th, 2010

Sony’s latest marketing campaign is aimed directly at Microsoft’s motion-sensing peripheral. If you go over to www.yaybuttons.com you can interact with a two-dimensional PlayStation Move, and see some quotes from Kevin Butler, explaining Sony’s various advantages over Microsoft’s Kinect.

Sony fans will love it. Microsoft fans will hate it. The rest of us just wish they would stfu and concentrate on making good games. If you want to sell consoles and peripherals, it’s all in the games.

PS3 Jailbreak released to the public

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 1st, 2010

I’m sure Sony isn’t too happy about this news. The PSJailbreak claimed to allow users to backup their games to a hard drive recently, and now a hack called PSGroove has surfaced, which claims to be an open source PSjailbreak.

This time the code has to be downloaded and installed on an AT90USBkey or Teensy++ USB development board, then you homebrew sorts will be able to execute unsigned third-party apps and games on the PS3. The ability to boot ISO files is disabled for now, but we are sure that a workaround will be available soon.

PlayStation 3 gets hacked by a USB-based modchip

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on August 22nd, 2010

The PS3 has been a tough nut to crack for hackers. Many have tried and failed, but now an Australian online store called OzModChips is claiming that they have a thumb drive that’s loaded with the world’s first PS3 Modchip.

The drive is available for a pre-order price of $169AUD which is about $150. I guess thats not a bad price to hack the device and copy games from discs and play pirated games. Not that we endorse that. It apparently works with any model of the PS3.

Sony says developers are already working on PlayStation 4 games

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on August 17th, 2010

We don’t have many details, but according to a recent edition of Game Informer Australia, Sony has stated that developers are already getting games ready for the as yet unannounced PlayStation 4. Sony’s PlayStation 3 has been with us for several years now, so it’s entirely possible.

Speculation is that the next-generation console will arrive by 2012. It makes sense as developers need time to develop games way ahead of launch and they need to get familiar with the hardware. I guess we will see.

Interestingly, Sony has a press conference lined up at GamesCom for mid-afternoon ET tomorrow, where this might be announced. It’s getting hard to keep up with all of these capacities.

It will be available for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in the fall of 2011. The game is being developed by Rocksteady Studios, Warner Bros Interactive and DC entertainment, and it will be set in Gotham’s new maximum security prison.

With the new Arkham in the city it should make for some interesting game scenarios, allowing even more characters to show up, so that you can bring them down.

And now a moment of silence for this PS3, which was destroyed in a fire

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on August 5th, 2010

It makes us sad to see consoles like this. I can only thank god that my own PS3 is still pristine and unburnt. Let’s bow our heads in silence for a moment.

Yes, this is what a PlayStation 3 looks like after a fire. Sniff. I promised myself I wouldn’t cry. No gamer should ever have to go through this. What kind of sick world would do this to a console? Everyone raise your PS3 controller high and hit the X button in a mock 21 gun salute.

PS3 firmware 3.41 causing hard drive upgrade problems?

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on July 31st, 2010

Seems like folks are always having problems after they upgrade their PS3 firmware, but we can’t say we’ve experienced any problems. Firmware 3.41 seemed like a minor update that added a new “You May Like” section to the PlayStation Store, but some people are saying that it’s been causing problems for anyone trying to upgrade the hard drive in their console.

There’s a 30-page plus thread on the official PlayStation forums where folks are venting about issues upgrading their hard drive. They’ve been getting a “no applicable data” error after trying to install the update, which has left them with a non-working PS3 and, in some cases, a corrupted original drive.

PS3 to offer 3DS Style slider for 3D titles

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on July 22nd, 2010

Looks like Sony has been paying attention to what Nintendo is doing. They have announced that future stereoscopic 3D titles on the PS3 will come with a 3D slider that allows you to adjust the depth of 3D displayed by the game. It’s similar to how the 3DS handles 3D.

The adjustment can be made using the left analog stick, using a tilt. Do you have your 3D TV yet? I doubt the phenomenon will last long, but it will be interesting to see what happens.
