LG has another Full HD monitor, the IPS225V-BN ready for Japan. This monitor features an IPS (In Plane Switching) panel, 21.5-inches of screen real estate and LED-backlighting with 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution.

There’s also a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 250 cd/m2 brightness and 178/178 degree viewing angles. It comes with DVI-D, mini D-Sub and HDMI. The IPS225V-BN is scheduled to hit Japan in mid-August for around 24,000 Yen (about $308).

The Electric Paper Airplane Conversion Kit will turn your paper airplane into a real airplane. Tiny, but real, as in engine powered. The kit includes a tiny propeller powered by a tiny electric motor. Just add it to any standard paper airplane. The propeller sits at the rear and pushes the plane.

A leak has confirmed that Dell’s XPS 15z will formally launch on Tuesday. The 15.6-inch system had already been teasing us and its $999 price was already leaked. The WSJ also reinforces the notion that this will be a competitor to the MacBook and that it would be the thinnest notebook of its size “on the planet.”

The official teasers and leaks that we have seen so far show that the design is very similar to the 15-inch MacBook Pro, with it’s speaker grilles, aluminum frame with a black bezel, and a slot-load optical drive on the right, as well as other traits. It is expected to use Core i5 and i7 chips. Stay tuned on this one.

Flatscreen displays are so last decade. Taking a hint from the shape of our own planet perhaps, some students from Queens University have created a snowglobe display. They hacked a 3D HD projector, two Kinect sensors, and a hemispherical mirror inside of an acrylic sphere, to create “Project Snowglobe”.

The result is an almost holographic display with a 360-degree view of a digital subject. The object isn’t really projected in 3D, but follows the movements of a single person, rotating and shifting position with the viewer. You can still gesture to control various aspects of the object as well.

The iPad truly is being used everywhere. Now the Federal Aviation Administration has granted early approval to use them in airplane cockpits, as major commercial airline companies including Delta want to do away with paper maps.

It’s a great idea, but maybe they could have one or two paper maps still. Just in case. The FAA has also started to grant approval for “electronic flight bags,” alternatively known as computers for aviation use in the last decade. Let’s hope the pilots don’t get too distracted playing Angry Birds or watching movies.

Fancy yourself an amateur scientist? Do you want to track the Earth’s rotation from your home? Well, if you have a few simple tools, you can do just that. The device above is called Copernitron and features a PlayStation Move controller, a turntable, and a homebrew Helmholtz coil which cancels out interference caused by our planet’s magnetic field.

It sends data to a Linux PC via Bluetooth and measures the Earth’s rotation, locates geographic north, and determines altitude. This is achieved by measuring the controller’s movements as it spins around at 45 RPM.
