Kindle book lending goes live

Posted in kindle by Conner Flynn on December 30th, 2010

Amazon today turned on Kindle book lending with very little fanfare. The feature lets users share a book once for two full weeks. The original owner’s access to the book is temporarily revoked during that time. The feature works on both the Kindle reader and all apps.

Loans are free, but eligibility of the titles depends on the publisher and for now may exclude major publishers. Early reports say that some Avon, Hachette, Harlequin and Penguin titles aren’t available to borrow. But don’t worry, more titles are likely to go live as authors either grant rights or publishers change their policies.

Google Street View now on all seven continents

Posted in Google by Shane McGlaun on October 1st, 2010

Google has now announced that it is offering Street View on all seven continents. Google has now added Street View coverage for Brazil, Ireland, and Antarctica to its offerings. Strange to hear Street View on Antarctica considering there are no streets.

The content was apparently either given to Google by people that have been there or the images were taken while walking around. The Antarctica content that is on the service is panoramas of Half Moon Island. There is also a cool image of a bunch of penguins standing around.

Polar Bear, Penguin, and Panda flash drives let rip endangered animals in half

Posted in Storage by Shane McGlaun on February 22nd, 2010

I guess there is a big market for novelty flash drives. There are so many flash drives out there that have strange designs, someone must be buying them. The latest strange flash drives to turn up are from Active Media Products.

The drives are in the Endangered Species USB flash drive line and come in penguin, polar bear, and panda bear styles. Each drive is 2.2-inches long and support Mac and PC systems. The drives are made from silicone and are PVC, lead, and mercury free.

Apple iPad eBook app is called iBooks

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on January 27th, 2010

Looks like the Kindle now has a worthy arch-enemy. Apple’s iPad has an ebook store called “iBooks”. (What else?) The publishers include all of the big players: Penguin, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, and Hachette.

Apparently the books won’t be cheap, which means publishers can stay in business longer. You can probably expect price wars very soon. The example book is a hefty $15. Interestingly, Apple is using ePub, which means books from other stores may work as well.

Penguin United Crossfire: How Wii guns should be made

Posted in Wii Accessories by Conner Flynn on December 10th, 2009

Penguin United Crossfire: How Wii guns should be madeYou know the deal with Wii guns. You slide your Wii-mote into the accessory, making it too large for comfort and fugly besides. Well, the new Penguin United CrossFire does away with that scenario by integrating a Wii-mote into the gun itself. Frankly that’s how all Wii accessories should be made.

The CrossFire pistol is perfect for playing any games that require firearms. The controller integrates all of the features of a standard Wii-mote, like accelerometers, IR controller, speaker, and rumble. It also gives you easy access to a D-Pad and 1/2 buttons. The gun trigger is the “B” button while there’s an “A” button on the side of the gun. Plus there’s a Nunchuck attachment port in the butt of the gun.

Cute Penguin robot wants to be your Facebook companion

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on June 29th, 2009

Cute Penguin robot wants to be your Facebook companionPierre Bureau, the founder and CEO of Arimaz in Switzerland, recently showed off a demo of a prototype of a cute penguin robot that his company is planning to begin selling in September for $99. It’s called MyDeskFriend. The idea is that this Penguin is a small companion for your desk.

It comes with a docking station which is hooked up to your PC. You can interact with the robot in a bunch of ways. It can follow your finger and will even detect the edges of the your desk so that it doesn’t fall off, thanks to 5 infrared sensors. It also has an accelerometer, so it knows when it’s being touched or shaken. The eyes will even change color depending on it’s mood. If you shake it too much, it’s eyes will turn red because you’ve made it mad. You can even connect it with your Facebook profile for the ultimate in dorky behavior.

Posted in USB by Conner Flynn on June 10th, 2009

WWF Penguin USB Flash DriveIf only the legs moved. Then this USB Penguin flash drive would be truly hilarious. Sadly, they do not. So, while the Penguin has landed head first in your USB port, presumably with cartoon sound effects, it’s legs aren’t moving. Failed comedy opportunity.

The WWF Penguin USB flash drive will come in varying capacities of up to 16GB. Each purchase will see 5% of the proceeds being donated to the WWF. The 8GB configuration is going for $26 currently.

Shakespeare bust with hidden Bat-switch

Posted in Home by Conner Flynn on December 14th, 2008

bust with hidden Bat-switchSure, this looks like an innocent bust that shows off your love of the writer/poet/ladies man, but throw back his head and it reveals a secret switch. Do you remember this yet? It’s from the old Batman TV series from the ’60s. Bruce Wayne hid his secret switch inside and used it whenever it was time to get into the batcave. It sat next to the red Bat-Phone.

Shakespeare’s switch can control almost anything electronic: lights, window shades, music, even swiveling bookshelf batcave entrances. It isn’t cheap though. You’ll need to spend Bruce Wayne bucks to get it. The limited-edition statue is selling for $315.

Snow world VR game helps burn patients

Posted in Healthcare by Conner Flynn on March 26th, 2008

VR game helps burn patients
Loyola University Medical Center will be one of the first hospitals in the US to use a Virtual Reality (VR) game to help aid burn patients in their recovery. The idea is that it will distract patients from their pain as they enter into a virtual ‘polar landscape of gently falling snowflakes, snowmen, penguins, igloos and icy rivers.’

According to the game’s developers the game will cause the mind to ‘block your view of the real world’ while helping you escape from your pain. I guess only time will tell just how well it works and with how many burn patients. While I think that the mind can be distracted, it remains to be seen if you can block out that kind of pain just be tricking the other senses. Then again, in burn cases, any distraction from the pain is a welcome thing and has to help in their recovery.

Leapfrog Tag brings audio to story time

Posted in Toys by Nino Marchetti on January 29th, 2008

Leapfrog Tag Reading SystemLeapfrog, a developer of educational products for kids, has unveiled a new handheld “learn-to-read” technology which lets children interact with the stories they read. It is called the Leapfrog Tag Reading System and pricing is around $50.

The Leapfrog Tag Reading System is a small handheld scanner a child can use to touch a page of a special “Tag book.” These pages, when touched, emit audio for the stories. This is supposed to create a higher degree of interactivity with what the child is reading. Parents connect the Tag handheld to a computer to transfer audio for each book onto the device. 16MB of internal memory lets Tag hold around five books worth of material.

I-CY Penguin is the New iDog

Posted in Accessories,Digital Audio by Chetz on December 28th, 2006

I-CY PenguinNo, I don’t think it’s going to end anytime soon. This year the iPod has such success over the holidays that reports have shown the iTunes web site had experienced problems keeping up.

Adding to the frenzy is the I-CY, a penguin looking toy that reacts to music seemingly similar to the iDog, I-CAT and I-FISH.

The I-CY waddles around, flaps its flippers, makes noise and flashes lights based on it’s “mood” and the music that is plugged into it and how much positive (or negative) attention you give to it.

If your collecting, you can add …
