Sony NGP to be called PlayStation Vita?

Posted in Sony by Conner Flynn on May 30th, 2011

The latest rumor is that Sony will name their upcoming NGP handheld the “PlayStation Vita.” Yeah, we think it’s weird too. Vita is the Latin term for “Life,” so let’s hope the battery life ends up surprising us. Backing up this rumor, the psvita.com domain features the same technical contact as psp.com.

Well, we should know for sure about this rumor at Sony’s E3 keynote on June 6th. The NGP is expected to sell for $250-$300 for the cheapest model. What do you think of this name?

Tron lightcycle case mod is awesome

Feast your eyes on this Tron case mod. It looks like it could just zip away from your desktop, leaving only a trail of light behind it. Bods Mods has just completed this 40-inch long lightcycle PC and unleashed it on the world. Or the grid. Whatever.

It features an ATX motherboard, liquid cooling, and blue light aplenty. It was created using SketchUp, Google’s 3D modeling app. After that it was a lot of foam shaping and Dremel work. The detail is simply stunning. Bods Mods has entered this case in Cooler Master’s 2011 Case Mod Competition.

Some Xbox 360s not reading discs: Microsoft to give owners a new system, year of XBL

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on May 18th, 2011

Looks like Sony isn’t the only gaming giant having problems. Microsoft’s new disc format will allow for an extra 1GB of storage space for new games and hopefully stop piracy, but there is a problem. It looks like some consoles contain drives that can’t read the new XGD3 discs. Opps.

The email pictured above has been confirmed as real by the Xbox Support Twitter account, but now it’s responding to inquiries by saying that the replacements are in response to a previous update and not the upcoming one that has been in beta.

Apple patent reveals unused iPad design with two USB slots

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on May 10th, 2011

During an earnings conference call last year, Steve Jobs hinted that Apple had tested several designs for the iPad during its development process. One of these possible designs may have surfaced in a patent application recently approved by the USPTO and now we get to see what might have been.

This patent shows off a Wi-Fi+3G iPad with an extra USB slot for landscape connectivity. The auxiliary USB slot would let you place the iPad in a dedicated landscape dock and dock it in portrait mode while syncing using both slots. Apple holds a patent for the design, but we will likely never see this in an upcoming iPad model. Still, it always nice to see how things might have been.
