Future vehicles could be made of “buckypaper”

Future vehicles could be made of “buckypaper”Flying in a plane made of paper of any kind sounds dangerous, but ‘buckypaper’ isn’t paper at all, at least not what we’re used to. It’s a new type of carbon nanotube that may usher in a new lightweight, high strength composite. It was discovered accidentally while trying to create the same conditions that exist in a star. Buckypaper isn’t ready for prime-time just yet, but the potential is amazing.

The tube-shaped molecule is dispersed in liquid and then filtered through a fine mesh, creating a very thin yet powerful film, called buckypaper. The molecule has a large surface area, and that’s what gives it the incredible strength: when stacked to become a composite, you have something 10 times lighter, but maybe 500 times stronger than steel, while conducting and dispersing heat like copper. It could find a wide range of uses in areas like aviation, computers, batteries, armor, even fuel cells.

MacGyver MP3 watch makes MacGyver relax

MacGyver MP3 watch makes MacGyver chill
Remember MacGyver? As in Angus MacGyver, the guy who could make a bomb from your grandmothers bra, dental floss and a paper clip? The folks at Skullcandy now have a watch bearing his name. The MacGyver watch features a 5-mode audio equalizer, 3-D stereo sound, built-in voice recorder, integrated USB cable, and thumb drive to store and transfer data.

Through the magic of my crappy Photoshop skills, we can clearly see Mac before and after wearing the watch. In the before pic he’s clearly bored while rigging his latest gadget, which obviously involves an alligator clip so he can escape captivity. In the second pic he’s wearing the watch. He’s still clearly not thrilled with his latest feat of innovation, however his watch is no longer from the 80′s and so he stops to have a beer and contemplate his career, secure in the knowledge that someone finally named a watch after him. MacGyver…Stargate…And a watch. Oh yeah.

Make your own paper camera

Make your own paper camera
Do you need a camera, but your budget is tight? Have paper and some free time? Corbis can help you print out and make your own camera. They’ve released some funky templates on their Web site.

All you have to do is print out a PDF file and stick it onto a card. After you’ve followed the score lines, then cut and folded accordingly, you’ll have a neat looking camera. The real trick will be finding some 35mm film, but that’s what eBay is for. You’ll have a pinhole camera that stands apart from everyone elses. How sturdy it will be is anybody’s guess. If you do this, let us know.

Smallest paper Nintendo DS even has tiny game

Posted in Designs by Darrin Olson on February 3rd, 2008

Tiny Nintendo DS Lite design made out of paperSomeone with a combined love of Nintendo’s DS and craft projects created with paper, not to mention some skills, has created what we believe to be the smallest replica of the Nintendo DS Lite. The little DS measures just 1.4 inches at its longest point and SonicScape Jun, the creator, even took the time to make a Nintendodgos game cartridge that actually fits in. The top also opens to reveal the double screens via a toothpick powered hinge.

From looking at the photos it appears that some incredible attention to detail and time was taken to make this little DS lite, but the maker of this paper design created a DIY video showing how you can make your own inside of 90 minutes with just scissors, pen knife, glue and this template. We’re thinking there is also an undisclosed prerequisite of skill that would significantly increase this time for most of us.
