Callo and Cally cellphone robots are cute, creepy

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on May 7th, 2010

These cellphone bots were developed by PhD student Ji-Dong Yim and Prof Chris D. Shaw at the School of Interactive Arts and Technology at Simon Fraser University, Canada. They are capable of displaying facial expressions to let you know of their moods, while also performing gestures and dancing when you get an incoming call.

It uses the Nokia N82′s camera to detect human faces and will mimic arm gestures using hand tracking. These bots are pretty cute. Almost too cute. Like they will get up to no good when you turn your back.

Touchscreens can now track hovering fingers

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on April 25th, 2010

Cellphones with Cyprus touchscreens, like the Nokia S60 and Palm Pre, will have an extra dimension very soon. Hovering. No, they won’t hover by your ear. This is like when you’re working on your desktop computer, and an icon changes when you move your cursor over it. Get it? Starting in the next few months, cellphones will be able to do just that, by detecting your finger near the screen, and letting you hover the cursor without touching the screen.

How’s that for awesome? …

Nokia E72 white edition

Posted in Nokia by Conner Flynn on April 22nd, 2010

It wasn’t that long ago that we pointed out the Nokia E72 purple edition and now a white version is on the scene. Interestingly, you can also get accessories that match the phone’s color.

Like a white Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-216, white Nokia StereoHeadset WH-205, white pouch, a white strap and more. Songs say it best. Play that funky music white boy. Or… Great gift for a… white wedding.

Is Nokia working on a Windows 7 Tablet?

Posted in Nokia by Conner Flynn on April 6th, 2010

Keep in mind that this is still in rumor territory, but according to Ashok Kumar, an analyst at Rodman Renshaw, Nokia is working with suppliers and design manufacturers on a touchscreen tablet. One that might be available as soon as this fall.

We don’t have many details, but we are guessing that it will be powered by Microsoft’s Windows 7. Again, there’s nothing official on this yet, but we wouldn’t mind a Nokia tablet at all. Now that the iPad is out, competitors can offer all of the things that the iPad lacks and we look forward to seeing what they can do.

Lego Mindstorms robot powered by Nokia N900, Twitter

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on March 23rd, 2010

Is there an area of our lives that Twitter has not taken over? Not anymore. Twitter has many uses and one of those uses is commanding robots like this Lego Mindstorm robot. It’s controlled by a Nokia N900 phone and users can tweet commands to the @N900Niko account and tell Niko the robot what to do. Stuff like, move forward, turn around or take a photo with the N900.

Photos are posted on Twitter using Twitpic. While you aren’t likely to see anything shocking, you’ll see plenty of floor, some chairs, maybe a trashcan. Who knows, it may go all Alfred Hitchcock and let you witness a murder. Probably not though.

Nokia releases purple E72 for the ladies

Posted in Nokia by Conner Flynn on March 22nd, 2010

Normally Nokia keeps things pretty uni-sex, but now they have gone and launched a new version of the popular E72 in Purple, trying to appeal to those businesswomen who want something to match their nail polish.

The color is Amethyst Purple to be exact. The E72 Amethyst Purple comes after the black, grey and brown versions that have been available since the Nokia E72′s launch. It surfaced in Lebanon and will apparently start selling there soon.

Nokia C6 slider

Posted in Nokia by Conner Flynn on March 14th, 2010

If the latest leaked images are to be believed, the Nokia C6 comes in slider form and looks fairly similar to the Nokia 5230. Looks genuine, but you never can tell for sure. Hopefully Nokia will confirm or deny soon so we can put it to rest either way.

It also looks similar to the N97 and N97 Mini, but the sliding QWERTY keyboard is parallel to the screen, which is much nicer. Looks like the C6 also has a trackpad that you won’t really need with the full touchscreen display.

In fact Nokia will release just 200 units. The phone sports the Oakley Thunderbird logo for the Vancouver Olympics laser etched on the back. It also comes preloaded with exclusive Oakley team videos and photos.

Nokia and Intel Partner on MeeGo Software Platform

Posted in Mobile Phones by Darrin Olson on February 15th, 2010

Nokia and Intel have teamed up to create MeeGo, a new open source software platform for use on mobile devices. The new platform will be a combination of the best features from the two companies existing platforms and will not target just smartphones but also tablet PC’s, netbooks and even connected television devices.

This announcement comes shortly after Nokia announced that the Symbian platform was going open source and hot on the heals of Google and their newly popular Android mobile software platform, in a clear chase to regain some of their market share. Nokia says the plans for the Symbian platform have not changed but will be used on less expensive smartphones, with the more expensive devices running MeeGo.

Samsung eyes bringing transparent AMOLED screen notebook to market

Posted in Samsung by Shane McGlaun on February 5th, 2010

Nokia has a phone that has a clear screen that was all for looks. I don’t care for being able to see through a screen myself; the feature is more of a gimmick to me. I certainly don’t want to be able to see through the display of my notebook at what is going on behind me.

Samsung showed off a notebook with a transparent AMOLED screen a while back and the notebook was popular enough that reports are now coming in that Samsung plans to bring the notebook to market in the next 12 months. The machine will come with the clear AMOLED screen that will drive the ADD prone to be unproductive.

Symbian Goes Open Source Ahead of Schedule

Posted in Mobile Phones by Darrin Olson on February 4th, 2010

Symbian, the world’s most popular smartphone operating system, has announced that it’s going open source about four months ahead of schedule. This move will allow more software developers to have access to develop applications and mobile devices based on the operating system.

The plan was to complete the transition of putting the OS under the Eclipse development license and work out deals with existing third party developers by later this summer. Symbian was able to move ahead more quickly, most likely to try and keep an edge on the newer open-source Android mobile operating system from Google.

Nokia X6 16GB gets a pink version

Posted in Nokia by Conner Flynn on January 25th, 2010

Nokia still has not announced the X6 16GB, but reports are already swirling around the interwebs that the device will be available multiple colors that aren’t available with the 32GB version. Apparently the 16GB version will be available in black, pink on white, and blue on white.

This one actually doesn’t look bad in pink. With the lower capacity, the price should go down some as well. The phone will probably not include Nokia’s Comes With Music (CWM) service. Aside from that, the 16GB version should be very similar to the 32GB version, with a 360 x 640 pixel touchscreen display, Wi-Fi, GPS, TV out, and 5-megapixel camera.
