Nokia N8 release date is September 2010 for $550, Pre-orders have begun

Posted in Nokia by Conner Flynn on August 16th, 2010

Will Nokia’s latest Nokia N8 smartphone save the company? We shall see. Those of us living in the US will be able to place a pre-order for the N8 for $550 and it is expected to ship at the end of September 2010.

So it will likely hit the scene after the Nokia World Event ends on September 15th. The N8 is the first 12-megapixel smartphone from Nokia, offering HD video recording, HDMI output and 16GB of internal memory. It’s no iPhone. That’s for sure.

Updated MeeGo Smartphone UI revealed

Posted in Nokia by Conner Flynn on August 2nd, 2010

MeeGo fans will be happy to get a glimpse of MeeGo’s pre-release stock UI for devices. However just like Symbian, there’s no guarantee that the experience is going to be consistent across manufacturers. There’s a video apparently captured from an online survey that makes it seem like Nokia might be going in a different direction.

Some of the improvements include a powerful multitasking user interface, Ovi Store integration, updated music player, and more. Check out a video below to see what Nokia has been up to recently.

LG to release several Windows Phone 7 handsets in 2010

Posted in LG by Conner Flynn on July 28th, 2010

Once again an LG representative has confirmed that a Windows Phone 7-powered handset is on the way and due in September. That handset is expected to be called the Pacific. The company also said that more WP7 devices are coming before year’s end.

LG is the third largest cellphone maker, behind Nokia and Samsung. Its phone shipments are slowly increasing, but it has fallen into losses due to a lack of smartphones, which has allowed Apple, RIM and other companies to grow much faster. Most of LG’s efforts this past year have focused on Android with only small efforts spent on Windows Mobile.

Nokia Kinetic concept phone stands up when you get a call

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on July 19th, 2010

We’ve never seen a phone raise and stand on it’s own like a zombie from a grave, but we dig this concept of just such a phone. This Nokia Kinetic concept design will use an electromagnet in it’s thick base to shift the balance so that it gradually rises or lowers itself.

When you get a call or a text message, the phone will gradually stand up, letting you know that you have a call. If you don’t want to answer the call, just tap it to reject. Pretty neat.

Renesas Electronics to buy Nokia modem operations for $200M

Posted in Nokia by Shane McGlaun on July 6th, 2010

Nokia may be the largest maker of mobile phones in the world, but most of the devices it sells are low-end handsets with little profit. Nokia wants a bigger part of the lucrative smartphone market and is making moves to concentrate more on its core offerings.

To do this Nokia has announced that it is selling its LTE, HSPA, and GSM modem operations to Renesas Electronics. The company has been licensing the Nokia modem tech since 2009.

You can hold Nokia phones however you want

Posted in Nokia by Conner Flynn on June 28th, 2010

When Steve Jobs addressed the iPhone 4′s antenna issue by telling people they are holding it wrong, Nokia seized the opportunity over at its official blog, where they tell readers that “whether you’re left-handed or right-handed, there’s no shortage of ways to hold your phone.”

And that’s how it should be with any gadget. To design a product like crap and then tell people they are holding it wrong is just lame. Good one Nokia. And for the record, I will hold any phone any way I like and it better still work.

Some new images of the upcoming Nokia C7 have leaked, giving us a decent look at this Nokia device. We still don’t have details, but we hear that it will feature an 8-megapixel camera with dual-flash.

Some other likely specs include a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen display, face detection, multi-touch display, stereo speakers and this device could just be powered by the Symbian^3 OS. We have no idea if this will be a hit when released, but judging by the picture, it looks pretty interesting.
