EA set to launch Boom Blox Bash Party

Posted in EA by Shane McGlaun on January 29th, 2009

Boom Blox Bash PartyOne of the best games that I have played for the Nintendo Wii was Boom Blox, the game from EA and Steven Spielberg. The game has single and multiple player modes that were cool and innovative. The multiplayer action was particularly fun and can be played by up to four players at once.

The follow-up to the game has been announced and it is called Boom Blox Bash Party. The game features the solo and multiplayer play that the original offered, with more of it this time around. EA says that there are over 400 new levels of puzzles to be solved with some of them in space and under water.

Wii Check-up Channel will let you get a second opinion from Dr. Mario

Wii Check-up Channel will let you get a second opinion from Dr. MarioSince everyone is using the Wii these days, I guess it was inevitable that we could get house calls from Dr. Mario. Nintendo Japan has announced a new Wii “Check-Up” channel that is scheduled for an April launch. The system was developed with the help of Hitachi, NEC, and Panasonic, with a health insurance company providing 2-way communication between users and health professionals who will give you “healthy guidance”.

Let’s face it, you could use some of that after playing video games all day. Apparently it will work in conjunction with Wii Fit and the Balance Board. You can also use NEC’s mobile phone health platform.

Sony PSPs in carnival colors for Japan

Posted in Sony by Shane McGlaun on January 26th, 2009

Sony PSP Carnival ColorsI have a couple PSPs lying around my house and both of them are boring, shiny black devices. Sure, you can get silver PSP here in the states, but that’s not really any better than black. What I really want is a PSP with a bright color like Nintendo offers with its DS portable.

Sony is offering portable gamers in Japan the option of four new and very bright colors for their gaming enjoyment. The bright shades are called Carnival colors and the machines can be had in blue, red, green, and yellow.

The Wrist Band Portable BatteryMeet the dorkiest looking wrist accessory ever. You might think this is a cool cyberpunk bracelet thing. Actually, it’s the ultimate way to charge your batteries and look like a loser at the same time. If you don’t believe me, then by all means, check out the product site. It’s sad that it looks like such a train-wreck, because it’s a convenient way to charge up all your gadgets on the go. Posted in Nintendo by Conner Flynn on January 17th, 2009

Famicombox: An NES with 15 cartridges built-inThe Famicom Box is a rare piece of Nintendo history. It’s an old school Nintendo system with 15 games built in. Sort of like Nintendo’s Greatest Hits. The games include Duck Hunt, Mega Man and Super Mario Brothers. It comes with two controllers and a light gun. Believe it or not it was designed for hotels and arcades.

It’s a rare nerd artifact, highly sought after and it’s available now on Yahoo Auctions at a starting price of $110. How high it will go is anyone’s guess. So, if you want an expensive NES alternative, the Famicombox may be for you. Your friends will be envious should you win.

NPD Growth ChartIn my home, we have a Wii, Xbox, and PS3 so most of my son’s friends end up over here playing video games after school. The one console that all of them were hoping for last Christmas was the Wii. It seems they weren’t alone in their dreams of a Wii.

Nintendo is talking up the numbers just released by the NPD Group that talk about the gaming market in 2008. According to NPD, the Nintendo Wii and DS game systems were the most popular systems, by a long way, during 2008.

YouTube heads to the Wii and Playstation 3

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on January 15th, 2009

YouTube heads to the Wii and Playstation 3YouTube has enjoyed tremendous success, but like all superstars, things can get lonely at the top. It’s a service that’s been stuck on the computer. The internet to be exact. Sure, it gets tons of hits, lots of people enter it’s doors every day. But it gets lonely. People just watch and post their videos. No one stops to talk.

Anyway, YouTube wants to start socializing more. So it’s getting off the computer and onto your TV, through video game consoles. YouTube is coming to the Sony Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii. It flips Xbox 360 the bird for now. PS3 and Wii owners can just go to www.youtube.com/tv to get a specially-formatted version of the site for your TV.

Buffalo USB Wi-Fi DongleLet’s face it guys, there are some things that we like to stick out a lot. There are some things we don’t want to stick out a lot, like our guts and the USB dongles we plug into our computers.

Buffalo has introduced the tiniest 802.11n Wi-Fi dongle that I have ever seen. The little thing is set to launch in early February and measures 16mm W x 33mm H x 8mm D. Those dimensions include the USB connector as well, which appears to take up about half of that height measurement.

Possible Nintendo DSi price and release date

Posted in Nintendo by Conner Flynn on January 14th, 2009

Possible Nintendo DSi price and release dateIf you believe the guys over at IGN, it seems that Nintendo’s DSi will be dropping much sooner than anyone had thought. There’s also a rumored price for the new DSi. IGN’s sources put the DSi’s release somewhere around April 4. The price is apparently going to be $179.99. It’s much higher than the DS Lite at $129.99 due to the DS Lite’s popularity. So, they want to squeeze some extra Mario coins out of ya.

Nintendo wants buyers to see the DS Lite as the system for casual gamers and the DSi to be seen as the system for serious gamers. Looks like the info is dead on, but until Nintendo makes an official announcement, it’s still speculation.

Sure Shot Wii Rifle is three weapons in one

Posted in Wii Accessories by Conner Flynn on January 11th, 2009

Sure Shot Wii Rifle is three weapons in oneWe’ve covered our share of Wii guns here at the brick. Machine guns, Pistols, even the Wiimote assassination kit, but I believe this is the first rifle that is actually three weapons in one.

The Sure Shot Wii Rifle was unveiled at CES 2009. It’s from CTA Digital and features a removable stock and barrel, three modes, and is compatible with nearly all shooting games on the Wii. That last bit is a big plus. You can hit the link below to check out a video.

Famicom cartridge becomes a Digital Camera

Posted in Digital Cameras by Conner Flynn on January 5th, 2009

Famicom cartridge becomes a Digital CameraIf you have a Final Fantasy III cartridge laying around collecting dust, maybe you can make like this guy and gut it so that it can be merged with a Sony point-and-shoot digital camera. It’s pretty neat looking. Turns out a Sony point-and-shoot camera is just the right size to fit inside a hollowed out cartridge, so the camera innards have been fitted into the cartridge perfectly. Like it was professionally done.

We’ve seen our share of DIY projects made from old Nintendo cartridges, but this one is really sexy. It’s what a camera should look like. It will void your warranty, so only do this when it runs out.

Custom Desert Eagle may be the strangest Wii gun mod yet

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on January 5th, 2009

Custom Desert Eagle may be the strangest Wii gun mod yeteBay seller fordelite_76 is just brimming with confidence that you will bid and bid high on this auction for a custom Wii gun they created. I can tell, because he uses a lot of asterisks and the word AWESOME sandwiched in between. That’s confidence. And why not? “IT WORKS GREAT AND LOOKS BETTER THAN ANY OTHER WII GUN OUT THERE ..I HAVENT SEEN …”

Who could argue with that? It looks so realistic with the large white Wiimote attached bayonet style. I bet the thinking was that if you can’t frag your enemy from a distance, just approach and stab your TV Civil War style. Another strange thing is that in the pics the gun appears to be hardwired to the Wimote’s B button via a bent hanger wire that pulls the trigger. Now that’s craftsmanship.

Kid goes nuts when he gets a Wii for Christmas

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on January 4th, 2009

No one can really blame a kid for going nuts when he gets a Wii for Christmas, what with the current Wii shortage and all. Still, there’s something a little off about how excited this kid gets. He must have been dreaming about wrapping his little hand around the Wiimote and getting in on the busting up a TV with your Wiimote action, for months.

Because he sure is excited about receiving his game console. The video is weird, but worth a laugh or two. Go on and watch it. Then you tell me if this little guy isn’t destined to be the next this guy. Oh and keep the volume down.
