Wii bicycle pedal accessory coming soon

Posted in Wii Accessories by Conner Flynn on August 13th, 2009

Wii bicycle pedal accessory coming soonThis leaked marketing slide spotted over on NeoGAF suggests that we may be getting a bike peripheral sometime soon. I wonder if they will port the arcade hit Paperboy to the Wii so you can peddle away and throw papers or maybe you can ride in the Tour de France.

We don’t know if the image is from Nintendo or from a 3rd-party accessory maker, but it looks a lot more useful than an inflatable horse. Obviously the $89.99 controller is geared toward bike-riding and fitness activities.

Nintendo patents inflatable horse controller

Nintendo patents inflatable horse controllerIf you thought that the already available range of Wiimote attachments was crazy, check this out. They are not out of gimmicky ideas just yet. The patent system gives us a glimpse at an inflatable horse-riding controller that may or may not one day have geeks parting with their money.

The inflatable cushion has a spot for your Wiimote and can track your crazed bucking and thrashing as you shout yeehaw, translating it into horse movement. You would hold the nunchuk as if holding the reins.

Xbox 360 the only console to stream Netflix

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on August 11th, 2009

Xbox 360 the only console to stream NetflixSorry PS3 and Wii, no Netflix streaming for you. Today we learn that Netflix streaming won’t land on Sony’s PlayStation 3 or Nintendo’s Wii (Not counting PlayOn). Ever. How do we know? Because at the bottom of Microsoft’s details on today’s Xbox LIVE update, it now states that Netflix Watch Instantly integration is now an “exclusive partnership,” with Microsoft.

It even says that the “Xbox 360 will be the only game console to offer this movie-watching experience, available to Xbox LIVE Gold members who are also Netflix unlimited plan subscribers.” Who knew that the Microsoft guys had the foresight to lock things down so quickly? Netflix could still find it’s way to other consoles in some form, but this sounds pretty definitive to us.

OpenChord allows real guitars to play Guitar Hero

Posted in Musical Instruments by Conner Flynn on August 7th, 2009

GuitarOpenChord has designed a system that allows an actual real guitar to sync up with your Nintendo Wii to play Guitar Hero. Just plug the Wiimote into the guitar and use real strings and frets instead of plastic buttons. There is one hitch and it’s a big one.

Guitar Hero wasn’t designed for use with six strings and 22 to 24 frets. Which kinda blows the whole thing out of the water. Too bad. Playing GH with a real guitar sounds like a nightmare. Who would have thought? Check out a video below.

Nintendo sells 500K Sports Resort units

Posted in Nintendo by Shane McGlaun on August 6th, 2009

wiisportresortsale-sbTypically, the games that consoles come with aren’t things that most of us find interesting. When I bought my Wii, I didn’t think much about Wii Sports being a cool game. As it turns out, I spend more time playing Wii Sports with family and friends than I do with any other game I own for the Wii.

The follow-up to Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, is now shipping and Nintendo has announced that the game is selling very well indeed. Nintendo says that between July 26 and August 3 it sold 500,000 copies of Sports Resort in the U.S. alone.

Wiimote and iPhone get together via Bluetooth

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on August 5th, 2009

Here’s a great hack that will merge your iPhone and your Wiimote. This is an OpenGL ES demo showing a Wiimote paired with the iPhone, using Bluetooth. The iPhone can then track the Wiimote’s orientation in real time. Pretty sweet.

It will be interesting to see what evolves from this project. Maybe one day soon you will be playing a smaller version of Wii games on your iPhone. Maybe Nintendo and Apple can get together and make games that use both a Wiimote and your iPhone…Like that could happen.

Chocolate Bar MouseAre you tired of your serious looking and boring mouse? Want something a bit different that will make you hungry and strain your wrist at the same time? Try this wireless mouse. It looks like a bar of chocolate with a bite taken out.

It can be yours for £21.99 ($36) and requires two AAA batteries to operate. It will compliment your chocolate iPhone case and your chocolate DS case very nicely. If you have all three, you may have an addiction to fake chocolate wrapped gadgets.

Black Wii now available for $333

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on July 31st, 2009

Black Wii now available for $333We’re as bummed as you are that Nintendo’s black Wii isn’t coming to the US. I mean look at that beautiful dark console. It’s like a stealth Wii. A thing to behold and ponder like a work of art…

It’s sad. Very sad that the Big N doesn’t love us here in the States. But don’t worry, apparenty the black console has hit the gray-market import scene. You know what that means, you’ll have to pay a premium at $333.

Wii demand finally slowing

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on July 30th, 2009

Wii hack allows playing homebrew games through flash playerNintendo has been rolling in the Wii dough for awhile now, but it looks like their cash printing machine may be slowing. According to an earnings report filed today, the Big N posted a 66 percent drop in quarterly operating profit due to “slowing demand for its Wii console and a stronger yen.”

What’s surprising is how fast demand has fallen. Nintendo maintained that it would sell 26 million Wii consoles before the year was out alongside 30 million DS handhelds, so we will see what happens. DS sales have also slowed due to “increased competition in the handheld business from Apple’s iPhone.”

N64 casemod of Princess Peach’s castle

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on July 20th, 2009

N64 casemod of Princess Peach’s castle We’ve seen more Nintendo casemods than there are coins in the Mario Realm, but this one is really over the top. It’s a wild and super creative version of Peach’s castle.

At first glance it looks like a cake, but nope, that there’s a mod dedicated to the Princess herself on top of a fully-functional Nintendo 64 console. According to the ebay ad, “the exterior of the castle has been molded to look like the bricks and roof tiles, then painted. The mural of Princess Peach is a very detailed mosaic and the five flags are made of cloth.”

Wii MotionPlus selling good

Posted in Wii Accessories by Conner Flynn on July 19th, 2009

Nintendo's MotionPlus due out prior to June 18thThe MotionPlus may have taken a full year to arrive on the scene, but now that it’s here it’s doing pretty well. Overall video game sales dropped in June for the first time since 2000, but Nintendo can’t complain. 361,700 Wii consoles and 766,500 DS units shipped in June, but the big surprise is that the company also managed to sell 169,000 Wii MotionPlus units.

That’s not including the bundled ones like the one packaged with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (that sold 272,400 units). Plus you have to take into account that Wii Sports Resort has yet to be released.

Nintendo: No plans to ship black Wii in USA

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on July 16th, 2009

Black Wii has a black boxYou know the old saying, once you go Wii black you never go back. Sadly, we will never know if that’s true or not. Why? We can only assume that Nintendo hates God, America and Apple pie. Sigh. Fans have been waiting for a Wii of any color other than white for years. And it looks like we will go on waiting.

A Nintendo rep told GameDaily that there are “no plans to have other colors of the Wii in the United States.” Like many of you I will always remember what I was doing on that fateful day our Wii dreams died. Today. It is a sad day for our nation.

Super Nintendo nightmare console

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on July 15th, 2009

http://technabob.com/blog/2009/07/14/game-over-snes-casemod-from-a-clearly-disturbed-mind/Your eyes will never be the same after taking in this abomination. Someone should put it out of it’s misery, but since it is fueled by the souls of all your past dead Mario lives, it remains undead. You can’t kill it, you can’t reason with it and it’s ugliness can not be stopped.

At night this thing even glows in the dark, looking spooky as hell, where it comes from. It’s still fully functional. It’s appropriately called the Game Over SNES.

The black Wii has a black box

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on July 14th, 2009

Black Wii has a black boxThe elusive black Wii has shown itself off a few times recently and with the August 1st launch date in Japan approaching, its back in the spotlight. Now it’s showing off it’s sexy packaging.

Sure, it’s the same old box, just done up in black, but it makes the console all the more alluring, with a hint of mystery and danger. Like that time good girl Sandy from Grease suddenly transforms and rocks John Travolta’s world all dressed in black like a bad girl. Sadly we still have no word on a release date here, but we hope it happens soon.
