DSi architect reveals unreleased Nintendo handhelds

Posted in Nintendo by Conner Flynn on March 27th, 2009

Almost was...Today at GDC09, Masato Kuwahara, project leader on the development of the Nintendo DSi, gave people a first-ever glimpse at two Game Boy spin-offs that never were. The first a is hefty predecessor to the Game Boy Advance; the second a touch-screen GBA SP.

Kuwahara says that the unnamed Game Boy Color successor was in development in 1995/96 and based on a 32-bit ARM RISC processor. The second, more recent R&D project was essentially a Game Boy Advance SP with a touch-screen over its flip-up display. The guts of the unit were actually from a Game Boy Color. It “was not well received” by Nintendo management.

Nintendo plans “DSi Enhanced” games

Posted in Nintendo DSi by Conner Flynn on March 26th, 2009

Nintendo planning its own Dsi App Store?According to Masato Kuwahara, project leader of the Nintendo DSi Hardware group, the big N is planning “Nintendo DSi enhanced game cards,” that offer DSi hardware-specific game features. The games would still be playable on both the Nintendo DS and the Nintendo DSi, but would have special features that can only be accessed on the DSi.

Kuwahara gave an example of using these features to create textures from photographs taken with the DSi camera. So, I’m guessing you can map your face onto Mario or a Pokemon if you want.

The SD Card Menu can be accessed from the Wii System Menu 4.0. That’s the new update that we are getting right now.

It lets the Wii work with memory cards larger than 2GB, maxing out at 32GB. Nintendo is also launching the new Virtual Console Arcade, that gives you all the old arcade titles on the Wii.

Wiimote for Xbox 360 coming this fall, PS3 version next yearInitially unveiled back in September of last year, the “Gametrak Freedom” motion controller for Xbox 360 and the PS3 returns after a makeover. It’s currently on display at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

It should be available this fall for the Xbox 360, the PS3 version will likely follow next year. The Freedom obviously closely resembles the Nintendo Wii remote. In fact, it just looks like a bad knockoff. It will ship with a USB-port base station connected to two wands that sit on either side of your TV. Unlike the Wii remote, the Freedom won’t require line-of-sight. Instead it will use “ultrasonic 3D positioning” to relay the remote’s position via pulses.

OnLive streaming gaming service: The future of gaming?

Posted in Set Top Boxes by Conner Flynn on March 24th, 2009

OnLive streaming gaming service: The future of gaming? If OnLive has anything to say about it, this could this be a console killer. Something that puts the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii six feet under. OnLive handles all the heavy graphics rendering on its servers and what you get is lag-free gaming as a video stream. IF it works as advertised.

You would use either your broadband-connected PC or Mac, or you could hook up the set-top box to your home theater, which features Ethernet, HDMI and USB. According to OnLive, the box costs “less than a Wii.” OnLive will be launching later this year.

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on March 24th, 2009

EA bundling Wii MotionPlus with tennis game in Europe? We already gathered that Nintendo’s Wii MotionPlus controller add-on was somehow tied to the launch of EA’s Grand Slam Tennis game, but it now looks like the two may be not just swell pals, but bestest buddies. According to a listing over on Amazon.de, the add-on will be available in a bundle with the game (in Europe), which will cost you just over $70. It launches on July 2nd.

Joystiq speculates that the move could also be the excuse Nintendo has been looking for to delay its Wii Sports Resort game, which was supposed to come bundled with MotionPlus.

DSi to get Virtual Console for Game Boy games?

Posted in Nintendo DSi by Conner Flynn on March 24th, 2009

Nintendo planning its own Dsi App Store? The Wii has a Virtual Console that lets you download games from the NES, SNES, etc. But there are no Game Boy games. That could be because they were saving them for the Nintendo DSi.

A rumour on game site Kombo seems to confirm that thinking. Apparently at a recent event for Club Nintendo members, it was announced that the DSi would be getting its own Virtual Console. Where you could buy Game Boy & Game Boy Advance titles. The games would be saved to an SD card and would at first be limited to first-party Nintendo titles.

Zeebo console launches in Brazil, gets publishersWhether there’s room for a new next gen console or not, Zeebo is squeezing it’s way into the lineup. And since there’s no way it would stand out in the US or Japan, they’ve decided on Brazil. The idea is to get into developing countries that maybe Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have ignored.

Getting your console positioned in the right country is one thing, but you need to have support from the game publishers. Good thing Zeebo has managed to get some big names now. EA Mobile, Namco Networks, THQ, and PopCap have all signed on to support the Zeebo.

Super Nintoaster

Super NintoasterThis toaster rejects bread in favor of NES titles, which are far more delicious. Created by the same modder behind the Nintoaster, this mod is just as heart healthy.

This followup is part toaster, part Super Nintendo, and is perfect for any geek kitchen. We’re hoping that the toaster/console trend keeps on keeping on, because there are still a whole bunch that need to be assimilated. Video below.

Nintendo planning its own Dsi App Store?

Posted in Nintendo DSi by Conner Flynn on March 20th, 2009

Nintendo planning its own Dsi App Store?Nintendo may be planning an app download service of its own, and has been encouraging developers to come up with app-like content for the DSi. We can’t really say it’s a surprise since everyone else seems to be either already doing it or planning on doing it.

The Japanese version of the DSi already connects to the DS Shop and DSi Ware, Nintendo’s gaming store. But according to a developer, the company is hoping to get some non-gaming stuff on the device. You know, the kind of stuff that that fits and enriches your lifestyle.

NVIDIA to bring PhysX SDK to Wii

Posted in Nintendo by Shane McGlaun on March 20th, 2009

wii-sb1NVIDIA is making the best of its purchase of Ageia several years ago and is aggressively rolling out its PhysX platform for computers and game consoles. The first physics effects added to early video games were not that cool, but more recent games like Mirrors Edge were fantastic when PhysX enabled.

NVIDIA has announced that it has been approved by Nintendo, as a third party solutions provider for the Wii console and the PhysX SDK is now available to registered Wii developers. NVIDIA says that the SDK includes a full-featured set of APIs along with a robust physics engine that gives game designers control over the character and its physical interactions.

Gamestop Wii supply is finally meeting demand

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on March 19th, 2009

wii-sbThis story has been three years in the making. Video game retailer GameStop finally has enough Nintendo Wii consoles for everyone, and it only took about three years for it to happen. In an interview with Gamasutra, GameStop’s senior VP of merchandising Bob McKenzie says that the company’s supply of Nintendo Wii consoles has finally caught up with demand.

“You know, three years later, we finally have enough inventory on the shelf, and we’ve got a couple of weeks in supply of this. That’s good because we can finally determine and gauge it before we get into the fourth holiday season.”

GTA: Chinatown Wars DS Lite

Posted in Nintendo DS by Conner Flynn on March 19th, 2009

GTA: Chinatown Wars DS LiteEarlier in the week, the Nintendo World Store in New York celebrated the release of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the DS. To honor the occasion, there was a special midnight release party with the usual free stuff and special giveaways.

The above DS Lite was one of those giveaways. And yes, I feel your pain and also wish I was there. Lucky bastitches. Check out the GTA:CTW chopstick styluses, which I’m sure gives Nintendo all kinds of ideas about a game that teaches one how to use them.

Robot gaming peripheral patented by Sony

Robot gaming peripheral patented by SonyRemember Nintendo’s gaming robot ROB? Well, it looks like Sony has a new patent application for an add-on gaming robot, which will react to both the game and the user.

The patent was filed in June last year, for a robot that moves around the room detecting the environment, and then displaying the same on the integrated screen. The bot would be equipped with wheels, acceleration sensors, camera, microphone and speakers to carry out all of it’s sinister missions, like listening and responding to user commands.
