Sharp to release e-book reader to compete with the iPad

Posted in ebooks by Conner Flynn on August 26th, 2010

Sharp’s President Mikio Katayama has said that their upcoming e-reader will be a rival for the Apple iPad. That’s quite a boast. Hopefully it will live up to the hype. This new device is being readied to hit the market before the year is over.

We know that this e-book reader will use a color LCD display with a new file format for e-books called XMDF. XMDF will use video and music along with basic text. It may even be 3D capable, since Sharp is behind the Nintendo 3DS display.

RetroN 3 game console plays all those NES, SNES, and Genesis games from your youth

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on July 7th, 2010

Back in the day, I played a lot of games on the Nintendo, Super Nintendo, and the Sega Genesis. I think a bunch of people out there probably have the games and controllers lying around, but the consoles are broken.

Hyperkin has unveiled a dirt cheap game console that will play cartridges from the SNEs, Genesis, and the Nintendo game system. You can finally get some use out of those old gigantic Nintendo cartridges other than taking them apart to mod.

Midnight Blue Nintendo DSi XL coming in July

Posted in Nintendo DSi by Conner Flynn on June 8th, 2010

We know that Japan has some new colors for its DSi XL, but we weren’t sure if we would be getting any new colors here in the States. Well, it looks like we are and that color is Midnight Blue. I know, it’s very underwhelming isn’t it?

In Japan they are getting yellow, blue and green, but apparently we just get this blue version, which leaves us feeling blue too. when it’s released in July.

Nintendo portables getting new colors, lower prices in Japan

Posted in Nintendo DS by Conner Flynn on June 2nd, 2010

Nintendo plans to lower the price of the DSi and DSi XL in Japan on the weekend following E3, but that’s not all. They will also be releasing three new colors for the DSi XL: Yellow, Blue and Green.

I like that they didn’t try to go for any fancy names: Just Yellow, Blue and Green. They kind of look like little child toys now. Right now these are only for the Japanese market, but maybe we will see them soon here as well.

Nintendo Wiimote RVL-036 clears the FCC

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on May 20th, 2010

Anyone would look at that image and instantly recognize it as a Wiimote. The Bluetooth device just passed through the FCC with flying colors courtesy of Foxconn. Not much detail, but there’s the new RVL-036 model number.

We don’t know what makes it so special, but we hope they’ve finally integrated the MotionPlus add-on into the controller. It would be nice if they made the design easier on the wrist too, but that’s just wishful thinking on our part.

Hyperkin Retro N 3 system plays nes, snes and genesis games

Hyperkin. Sounds like over-caffeinated redneck relatives. Actually Hyperkin is the maker of the Retro N 3, which can play games from the original Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis in a single system.

The console looks pretty slick too. The Retro N 3 can play games from their original cartridges, rather than running emulated ROMs, so you can just use your old carts and play them the way that the gaming gods intended.

We have already mentioned that three different retailers had pegged May 9 as the launch date for a new black Wii bundle. Nintendo has officially confirmed that new bundle is incoming today.

The new Wii will ship in black color and will include Wii Sports, Sports Resort, and the Wii MotionPlus accessory as we mentioned the other day. Nintendo also says that additional black remotes and Nunchuks will be available as well.

Posted in Nintendo DS by Conner Flynn on March 23rd, 2010

Nintendo has now unloaded a press release in Japan that lets the world know that some new 3D-capable portable gaming is in our future, with an unveiling set for E3 2010 in June. Right now it’s called the 3DS, a glasses-free 3D upgrade to the DS and DSi.

Don’t worry about all of those games that you bought. It will use a “compatible cart” for backwards compatibility. At the moment Nintendo sees the launch of the 3DS sometime around March 2011.

Reggie Fils-Aime says Wii users don’t care for Netflix HD

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on January 15th, 2010

We often find ourselves wondering just what Nintendo is thinking with things like a lack of Wii colors, a lack of HD on the Wii itself, a lack of good games… What’s the deal Nintendo? Now Reggie Fils-Aime of Nintendo of America fame now claims that his customers do not want a feature that has become a standard.

The Xbox 360 and PS3 can stream full HD movies from Netflix at no extra cost and Reggie has stated his belief that “there really is no loss for the Wii consumer” because “the vast majority” of Netflix streaming content isn’t HD anyway. Reggie has also claimed that the 26 million Wii console owners out there have voted with their wallets and will be quite happy to continue with standard def. Say what?

Next Nintendo DSi will have an HD screen, maybe 720p

Posted in Nintendo DSi by Conner Flynn on January 6th, 2010

Satoru Iwata recently announced that the next DS will have a motion sensor, but that isn’t all. He also told Asahi that it will have a higher-resolution screen. An HD screen.

The next DS, after the DSi XL, will feature a 1024 x 768 screen, which close to 720p. Aside from that, Iwata also confirmed that Nintendo is in talks with several networks for connected DS consoles. Obviously they want to compete with iPhone games. Our guess is that an app store will also accompany these upgrades.

Nintendo readies blue, pink Wii remotesNintendo will be launching its Wiimote in two new colors, blue and pink. Is it Easter and nobody told us? Now with the existing white and black controllers, users will have four color options. The new pink and blue wiimotes will come with the MotionPlus add-on and a protective jacket.

They will ship on February 14th 2010. Nothing on price just yet, but we should be talking about $40. The odd thing here is that Nintendo doesn’t want to release color-matching nunchuks.

There’s also a set of color filters so you can create visual effects. Judging by the design and colors, this is aimed at young girls, but what do you care. You’re the guy taking pics with a DSi.
