Greenpeace’s Green Scorecard

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on November 25th, 2008

Greenpeace’s Green ScorecardIt’s that time again. Greenpeace has released their new Guide to Greener Electronics. Compared to last year, there are many changes. Some you might expect, some you may not have foreseen.

Some manufacturers went up on the scale, while others went down. Nokia is the standout at the top, right at the 7 out of 10 mark, but poor Nintendo… The Big N is once again stuck at 1 out of 10. How did Apple fare? They fail once again and drop to the 14th position out of 18 companies.

Nintendo offers two new DS Lite bundles

Posted in Nintendo DS by Conner Flynn on November 25th, 2008

Nintendo offers two new DS Lite bundlesIf you haven’t got yourself a DS Lite by now, I don’t know if these two new bundles are going to lure you in. And if you already own a DS lite, chances are you are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the DSi here in the states.

But if Nintendo has the urge to bundle, at least a few of you will have the urge to buy. The bundles come in an Ice Blue Brain Age set with custom carrying case and a Mario Red New Super Mario Bros set with “M” logo. They’re pretty nice looking and are being released this Friday for $150.

Wii64 is one crazy backwards mod

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on November 21st, 2008

Wii64 is one crazy backwards modSome mods don’t make a whole lot of sense. Why tear out the innards of your Wii, just to put an N64 inside? An SNES in a Wii would still be questionable, but at least that’s an SNES. This inbred Nintendo creation is dubbed the “Wii64″, and keeps the Wii’s blue lights lighting up whenever it is turned on. The Wii64 is currently on eBay, where bidding began with $49.99. It’s somehow up to $64. What we need are more console guitars.

Everlast Wii Boxing Gloves

Posted in Wii Accessories by Conner Flynn on November 20th, 2008

Everlast Wii Boxing GlovesWe’ve covered our share of Wii boxing gloves, but at long last Nintendo and Everlast have teamed up to deliver a knock out with these new boxing gloves. Of course they will cost you. After all, you recognize the name right? Everlast is the big time product maker of all kinds of real Boxing gear, so the gloves will cost you $30. Look at it this way. After you buy them at that price, you’ll be good and ready to knock somebody out.

Need for Speed Undercover is now shipping

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on November 19th, 2008

Need for Speed UndercoverI have mentioned before that I have been a big fan of the Need for Speed series since it first debuted years ago. My favorite title in the series was Need for Speed Most Wanted. I really liked the chases where you run from the cops in the cars you customize yourself.

The series got away from the cop chases and went more “PC” with Need for Speed Pro Street and as cool as that game was, I missed the chases. Need for Speed Undercover brings the police chases back to the series and EA announced this week that the game is now shipping.

Nintendo Wii Speak has a one-time use code

Posted in Wii Accessories by Conner Flynn on November 15th, 2008

Nintendo Wii Speak has a one-time use codeBy now you’re well aware of the upcoming Nintendo Wii Speak peripheral. It’s a microphone that lets you communicate with other Wii users online. Some of you have eagerly waited for it. Ars Technica discovered that it comes with a 16 character code to download the “Wii Speak” channel. Thing is, it’s a one time use code. You can not replace it if lost.

That’s right, you can NEVER sell it, NEVER give it away and NEVER use it on another Wii Console other than the one it was downloaded on. I hear ya. It sucks. I consider it a scam on Nintendo’s part. I for one won’t be buying this useless turd. Nintendo isn’t going to tell me what I can do with hardware I purchase. I’m gonna get a friend to buy it and download onto my system. Then I’ll act dumb when it doesn’t work on theirs later.

Exarstick Arcade Stick for the Wii

Posted in Wii Accessories by Conner Flynn on November 13th, 2008

Exarstick Arcade Stick for the WiiSome of us who are old enough to remember arcades would prefer an arcade stick for the Wii as opposed to the fancy motion control you young whipper-snappers are using today. And while I’m at it, you can get the hell off my lawn and stop playing your music so loud. This controller is pretty close to the arcade experience, thanks to its shape and size.

The Exarstick comes with Minus and Plus buttons which are mapped to buttons on the top row, matching the Select and Start buttons on the SNES controller. The only gripes we are hearing are the ones you might expect, regarding its lightweight which makes things a little awkward when the game gets intense.

Trackball mod puts some retro on your Wiimote

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on November 12th, 2008

Trackball mod puts some retro on your WiimoteThe modders over at Acid Mods can’t help but defile all of their Wiimotes. Despite the fact that that sounds just plain wrong, the results are pretty cool. The rapid fire switch was cool and brought back memories of the Turbo Advance.

Now they’ve modded a trackball into a Wiimote, which also functions as D-pad and A button. This is pretty useful as it puts both under your thumb at the same time and should make web browsing interesting. Soon there will be an order page and instructions for adding the trackball to other controllers, like a PSP, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360 and PS3. Now we just have to get Missile Command and Centipede on the Wii and we’ll be set.

1973 GT Opel Batmobile is one odd Bat-car

Posted in Automotive by Conner Flynn on November 11th, 2008

1973 GT Opel Batmobile is one odd Bat-carAccording to the description on this eBay auction, some nutty doctor in California took a 1973 GT Opel and converted it into a Batmobile to bring to the hospital for kids. The kid part is a noble idea. But a 1973 Opel? It’s unique, we have to give him that.

The auction ended at $9,000.00. Some of the specs include: a SONY Digital Navigation System #NVX-F160, SONY Pre-Amp XDP-U50D, SONY 10 Disk CD Changer CDX-U404, SONY Hi-8 VCR, Pioneer CD player DEH-85 in the dash….comes with the batman theme on cd!, Alpine Bat Phone #91530, Super Nintendo NES Game system with Batman Forever game, SONY Interface Equalizer #XE-744 and a whole lot more. Strange, but we dig it.

Geek Soccer using Wii Fit & LEGO Mindstorms

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on November 10th, 2008

Here’s an interesting way to kill an afternoon. Apparently a couple of guys hooked up two Wii Fit balance boards to LEGO Mindstorms…something, and made them move in sync with leaning and jumping motions. While I don’t think this game is going to get you fit, it’s a clever hack. Maybe Nintendo can change the Lego things into battle bots and market the whole deal as some sort of Ultimate robot fighter game for the those who don’t mind obesity all that much. Hacking Wii-Fit isn’t new, but this one puts a whole new spin on things.

Atari will publish Ghostbusters: The Video Game

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on November 7th, 2008

Ghostbusters GameI really liked Ghostbusters when I was a kid and Atari has some really good news. As Ray Parker would say, “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!” the Ghostbusters game has found a publisher. Whether or not the game would make it was debatable after it was dropped from the lineup of the original game publisher.

Atari has announced that it will be bringing Ghostbusters: The Video Game to market in 2009 for six game systems. The game should be cool for those who grew up watching the movies. The original cast is back for the game lending likenesses and voices to the project.

Mad Catz will launch Wii Rock Band gear in early 2009

Posted in Controllers by Shane McGlaun on November 7th, 2008

Mad Catz Rock Band DrumsI have talked before about Rock Band and how much fun it is to play with a group of friends. I’m not the only Rock Band fan out there that likes to play the game. Popularity for the game is so high that there is a wealth of aftermarket controllers on the market for the Xbox and the PS3. You don’t see that many for the Wii though.

Mad Catz has announced that it will be changing that. The controller maker has signed an agreement with Nintendo that will allow it to build and market officially licensed Wii Rock Band controllers outside of Asia.

Posted in Nintendo DS by Conner Flynn on November 5th, 2008

Overclock your DS Lite with XCM Hyper Gear caseOverclocking your DS Lite, without having to open it up or use software? The new XCM Hyper Gear case for the DS Lite not only gives your handheld a new look, it also turbocharges your DS Lite games thanks to a switch on it’s bottom right corner. Just flip it, and your DS Lite will run at 140% or 170% of its normal speed.

Seems like it won’t kill your DS, but your battery will die pretty fast. It speeds up your game’s graphics and audio, making everything seem like your DS has a coke habit. XCM expects to release the Hyper Gear case within the next few weeks. So when Mario says Wa-hoo! he’s gonna mean it this time.

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on November 4th, 2008

Hyperkin SG/FC plays NES and Sega Genesis gamesThis Jekyll and Hyde system is called the Hyperkin SG/FC. It can play both Nintendo NES and the SEGA Genesis console games. It’s basically just a console with both game slots built in. It connects to your TV via an RCA composite video output, and offers stereo audio output. The bundle includes a pair of joypads in the box, so you will be able to start playing all your favorite old school games right away. An eBay search should find you the system for $35 to $45 bucks.

PS3 Wiimote Patent filed

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on October 30th, 2008

PS3 Wiimote Patent filedCheck out this patent for a PS3 Wiimote device which can be split into two to suit different gaming methods. The technology is similar to Nintendo’s Wiimote, featuring accelerometers, LED-based tracking etc. One of the unique functions of the controller is the ability to send out ultrasonic frequencies that can determine the absolute xyz position. Will we ever see this from Sony? You can bet on it, but likely in an updated form. Everybody is trying to keep up with the Wii while making motion based games uniquely their own.
