Posted in Dell by Conner Flynn on November 5th, 2010

Dell is offering to trade employees’ old and broken BlackBerry devices for the new Venue Pro. That’s pretty generous of the company and if everyone takes them up on the offer, there will be 25,000 RIM smartphones out of a job.

It is not just nice to do, its good for business. The Wall Street Journal says that this will cut Dell’s mobile communications bill by a full quarter, as they will no longer have to support BlackBerry servers. In other news Android variants will be made available in the future as well.

US carriers with brand new smartphones for $30 on contract? We’re talking about LG’s Optimus T, featuring a 3.2-inch HVGA display, 3 megapixel cam, and pre-loaded Swype with Android 2.2.

If you want to get that $29.99 price, obviously you’ll need to sign up for a new two-year contract with a qualifying data plan, and then wait patiently for a $50 mail-in rebate. The phone goes on sale Wednesday, November 3 and comes in black or burgundy colors. I’m not digging the burgundy myself.

Google launches new YouTube app for Android

Posted in Google by Conner Flynn on October 21st, 2010

Google has announced a new version of its YouTube app for Android. Most Android phones come with YouTube preloaded already, but the new version is available as a separate download from the Android Market. Google is trying to make it easier for users to update key apps without waiting for their phone company to upgrade to the latest version of the Android operating system.

The new app currently requires Android 2.2 and up. It also supports in-page playback, allowing you to read comments while a video is playing. You can still watch videos in full screen, by rotating the display. It’s easy to search YouTube, view and subscribe to channels, even shoot videos with your camera and upload them directly to YouTube.

Posted in Headphones by Conner Flynn on October 20th, 2010

We don’t know much about these new headphones from Marshall, but we do know that they’ll be available on November 15 and that they’re apparently perfect for hipster graffiti artists.

Maybe tattoo artists as well. The packaging alone makes these tempting and the name Marshall certainly carries a lot of weight. At any rate, all will be revealed soon. Hopefully the price won’t keep them too far out of reach. We definitely like what we see so far.

BlackBerry PlayBook should have 64GB model, large battery

Posted in BlackBerry by Conner Flynn on October 18th, 2010

RIM’s Co-Chief Executive Officer Jim Balsillie has revealed a few more details about the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. According to CrackBerry, the device will have a 5,300mAh, non-removable battery, which will help it deliver more life than competing products. The similarly-sized Galaxy Tab packs only a 4,000mAh battery and a claimed seven-plus hour battery life when watching movies.

The PlayBook should last longer, obviously and maybe it will even match or surpass Apple’s 10-hour rating for its larger iPad. RIM’s smartphones are already very efficient and known for their long operation on a single charge. We hope some of this efficiency rubs off on the PlayBook as well.

White iPhone 4 spotted in New York

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on October 16th, 2010

The guys over at Pocket-Lint caught a glimpse of a white iPhone 4 which was being used by a mysterious man. They approached the owner and asked how he got his hands on the white iPhone 4 since no one else has managed to do so. He mentioned that Apple’s HQ in Cupertino has plenty of white iPhones, so he had a friend “fix him up” with the model.

We had heard that Apple isn’t too happy with their suppliers when it comes to matching the white color of the phone’s parts, so it will be a while before this issue gets sorted out.

HP officially drops plans for Android Phones and Tablets

Posted in HP by Conner Flynn on October 4th, 2010

HP has already announced that the company won’t be launching any Windows Phone 7 devices that would use Microsoft’s mobile OS and now today the company says that they will also be killing plans for Android devices from the company’s lineup.

HP will turn it’s focus on its own webOS mobile operating system instead, taking advantage of its acquisition of Palm. The one exemption to this new mandate seems to be the HP Photosmart eStation printer, which features an integrated Android tablet.

Verizon Wireless launches phone trade-in program

Posted in Verizon by Shane McGlaun on September 30th, 2010

I am not a big fan of AT&T most days, my iPhone drops calls and I have had nightmares trying to get a new iPhone 4 so far. If you are tired of AT&T or another carrier and want to move to Verizon the company has a new trade-in program that you may be interested in.

The program will let you trade in any mobile phone that operates on any carrier. The phones will be accepted whether they work or not and the price given depends on the condition and what they are. My cracked screen iPhone 3GS is worth a crappy $12 and even if the screen was whole, the price is only about $20.
