Wii MotionPlus selling good

Posted in Wii Accessories by Conner Flynn on July 19th, 2009

Nintendo's MotionPlus due out prior to June 18thThe MotionPlus may have taken a full year to arrive on the scene, but now that it’s here it’s doing pretty well. Overall video game sales dropped in June for the first time since 2000, but Nintendo can’t complain. 361,700 Wii consoles and 766,500 DS units shipped in June, but the big surprise is that the company also managed to sell 169,000 Wii MotionPlus units.

That’s not including the bundled ones like the one packaged with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (that sold 272,400 units). Plus you have to take into account that Wii Sports Resort has yet to be released.

Acceleglove offers complex motion control for gamingMotion detection is all the rage in the video game industry now. From the Wiimote to the Wii MotionPlus add-on and even the accelerometer in the iPhone. The Acceleglove uses aspects from all to create an awesome gaming glove.

Using the Wiimote, you can make general movements but nothing specific, like finger movements and the like. The Acceleglove puts accelerometers in the fingers of the glove so you can make more complicated hand gestures. It was developed by AthroTronix and at the moment the Acceleglove can only detect some hand motions like say pinching. But the potential is huge.

Well, if you’re going to nerd out, you may as well do it with officially licensed Wii accessories.

We’ve seen our share of Wii lightsabers, but they just aren’t endorsed by Lucas’ money machine. This one is. This lightsaber glows, and Bensussen Deutsch & Associates have plans for a matching blaster too. The accessories don’t make room for MotionPlus, but so what. They’ll be shipping with Star Wars - The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes, a game that doesn’t support MotionPlus.
