Nintendo 3DS June 6 update: free Excitebike, Pokedex 3D

Posted in Nintendo 3DS by Conner Flynn on June 2nd, 2011

Good news for 3DS owners. When you get the June 6 update for the 3DS, along with the browser and eShop, you’ll also get free copies of a 3D-upgraded Excitebike and a new Pokedex 3D. The new app shows collected Pokemon characters in 3D and even supports augmented reality markers to show them in 3D in a ‘real’ environment. As real as it can get anyway.

The update also gives you the ability to port over most DSiWare games from older systems to a 3DS and the ability to download short 3D videos, like music videos, comedy, or movie trailers.

Darpa’s Hologram Goggles Will Call In The Drones

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on April 11th, 2011

When you need to send in deadly robots, holograms might be the answer. As it is right now, authorizing and targeting air strikes is a process that can be bureaucratic. Sometimes it takes lawyers, intelligence analysts, air controllers, and commanders at multiple layers to get it done.

Well DARPA has a new idea. Give the job to one guy on the ground who can control a drone or manned plane that’s circling above. A single man is low profile enough to slip into areas that need slipping into without alarming the locals and giving away his position. The soldier would use the goggles to view markers and call in airstrikes.

Amazon Kindle update to give real page numbers, public notes

Posted in kindle by Conner Flynn on February 7th, 2011

Amazon has posted a preview version of a new 3.1 firmware update for the Kindle, which will bring some of its most requested features. Now you will finally have the option of real page numbers that match those from the paper edition and markers give students the ability to refer back to the real page if they follow along in class. Both are very handy features.

Book notes can also now be made public. This creates a social aspect that lets a book club or friends see what others have said about a title. That should make Oprah happy anyway. There’s also a new layout for magazines and newspapers to provide a better overview and a way to quickly jump to an article. Also, when you reach the end of a book, you will get the option to rate it at that time.

Hands On: Fretlight Guitar makes it easy to learn guitar

Posted in Review by Conner Flynn on April 16th, 2010

The folks who make the Fretlight guitar learning system wanted us to check it out and see for ourselves how easy it is to learn guitar with their system. The basic idea is that the frets of the guitar light up. That, along with an interactive learning system which includes videos and tutorials are supposed to make it easy.

Since my son has been learning how to play guitar by more or less teaching himself, I figured he was the perfect candidate. So they sent us the whole kit and my son checked it out. How good is it at teaching you to play the guitar? His review follows:

Breathalyzer detects lung cancer

Posted in Health by Conner Flynn on August 31st, 2009

Breathalyzer detects lung cancerBreathalyzers have done a lot of good ever since they were invented. They have taken many drunk drivers off the roads for one thing. Well, now they are ready to help out in a whole new way thanks to some scientists in Israel, who are working on a breathalyzer that they think can detect lung cancer.

Similar tests already exist, but require a pretreatment of the breath, which adds time to the procedure and money. The Israeli breathalyzer doesn’t need any pretreatments. The team conducted a study, with 56 healthy volunteers and 40 people who were known to have lung cancer. They were tested by the breathalyzer, using a sensor that consists of nine gold nanoparticle chemiresistors.

HP makes business notebooks look good

Posted in HP by Shane McGlaun on April 28th, 2009

hpprobook-sbI have never really understood why companies like Dell and HP never made a business notebook that was cool looking. Major computer markers always try to make consumer notebooks attractive, but the business machines were stodgy black boxes with the sex appeal of a tube sock.

HP is changing that with the introduction of its new HP ProBook series of notebook computers. The line has attractive colors with a choice of merlot or glossy finishes. The machines can be had in 14-inch, 15.6-inch, and 17-inch form factors. All of the machines can be fitted with HP Mobile Broadband using Gobi technology to allow the modem to operate on several broadband networks from different providers.

Solar Driveway Markers keep you from driving into your living room

Posted in Automotive by Conner Flynn on March 12th, 2009

Solar Driveway MarkersSometimes you can’t see where you are going, while driving. This might be due to alcohol, snow or even fog. Most likely alcohol. These Solar Driveway Markers sure would come in handy so you don’t end up parking in your living room.

They’re 1 meter tall, stick into the ground and are recharged by the sun so that they may blink red for 8 hours. That way when you come home you’ll know where or where not to park. Buy a whole bunch and put on a light show, or use it to actually confuse people, then sit back and watch the comedy.

Google bans word “netbook” from its ad network

Posted in Google by Shane McGlaun on February 9th, 2009

Psion NetbookUnless you live under a rock, you have heard of a netbook already. Netbooks are one of the sole bright spots in the computer industry amid the current poor global economy. The netbook market is posting significant growth as shipments of other more expensive notebooks and desktops are slumping.

Psion has been saying for over a year that computer markers shouldn’t be using the term “netbook” to generically describe the small, low cost systems we know and love today. The reason is that Psion apparently owns the trademark for the word “netbook” and has a machine that goes by that name.

Citizen Astrodea Celestial watch is awesome

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on February 26th, 2008

Astrodea Celestial watch
To quote Dave Bowman from the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, “My God, it’s full of stars!”. A whole watch face that looks like the cosmos? Count me in. The Astrodea collection from Citizen looks sweet. The watch face has a 35° view of the heavens as seen from the Northern Hemisphere, which rotates in real time, showing 1,109 stars and 169 cluster galaxies. It has other features that include measurements like equinox indications, constellation markers, location of the sun, solar position, sunrise and sunset times and the daily duration of sunshine. That might be too much info for me, I just dig the looks.

It comes in both a blue or gold face version, with stainless steel case and band with non-reflective sapphire glass. And since the face is so detailed, it even has a 10x magnifier for close-up inspection. Both versions are available for $585.
