Nintendo drops DS Lite to $100, Mario games go red

Posted in Nintendo DS by Conner Flynn on May 31st, 2011

Out with the old and in with the new. That’s what Nintendo is thinking with an official price cut on the DS Lite from $129.99 to $99.99. Very nice of them. The DSi’s price is still $149.99 and the DSi XL is $169.99.

Aside from the DS Lite price cut, Nintendo is also playing with colors. Red in particular. They will be re-releasing six classic DS Mario games with red boxes. They hope that the red color makes them easier to spot when customers are shopping for games. These games include New Super Mario Bros., Mario Party DS, Mario & Donkey Kong: Miniland Mayhem, Super Mario 64 DS, Mario Kart DS and Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story. So who is buying a DS Lite now?

Well, we knew it was coming and sure enough, Nintendo just made it official. They will cut the retail price of the Wii down to $149.99, and will also include a copy of Mario Kart and the Wii Wheel peripheral with the console.

Nintendo demonstrates glasses-free 3D on the Wii

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on March 3rd, 2011

So after its 3D capable handheld protable gaming device, which is all the rage, Nintendo is now incorporating glasses-free 3D technology into the Wii gaming console. Nintendo Producer Hideki Konno showed a demo of how Wii Nunchuck can be used to control the 3D depth effect in a special version of Mario Kart Wii.

The demo was shown at the GDC 2011 event in San Francisco. There’s no word on how soon gamers will be able to play 3D on their Wii, but we would guess it won’t take very long before you are racing Mario and friends in 3D.

French guy plays Mario Kart in real life

Posted in Humor by Conner Flynn on February 21st, 2011

How many times have you been in traffic and wished you could play Mario Kart in real life? Well, French humorist Rémi Gaillard actually did just that. He played Super Mario Kart in real life by driving a go-cart through city traffic while disguised as Mario. I wish I could have seen it firsthand.

And yes, he even tosses banana peels at other cars and drivers and even collects power-ups. Eventually some French motorcycle cops catch up to him, so don’t try this yourself.

Takara Tomy RC Mario Karts

Posted in R/C Toys by Conner Flynn on June 26th, 2010

Mario Kart is now in 3D, as in these are real life rc Mario Karts that you can race. The action isn’t limited to the screen anymore thanks to Takara Tomy of Japan, offering real life RC Mario Karts. The controller actually contains items that you can throw at other players including the usual green shell, red shell and banana peel.

If you throw a banana, an IR light will show up on your rear so that whoever hits it will crash off course just like in the video game. Sounds like a lot of fun.

PowerV Quad charges four Wii Remotes with no wires

My son and his friends are always playing the Wii it seems. They are all big fans of Mario Kart and can talk more thrash than you would think a bunch of 8-year-olds were capable of. It seems like I am always having to replace the batteries in the remotes though.

Konnet Technology has unveiled a cool new wireless remote charger called the PowerV Quad. The device charges the Wii Remotes using wireless induction technology.

Xercise bike for Wii lets you get fit while gaming

Posted in gaming accessories by Shane McGlaun on December 10th, 2009

xercisebike-sbGo to any elementary or middle school today and you will see right away that many kids today are obese. I like my video games as much as the next person, but kids need to run and play too so they can get some exercise. The Fun Xercise Bike for the Wii has debuted to help kids get fit while they play games.

The folding bike has a steering wheel attachment connected to it for inserting the Wii remote for games like Mario Kart. Apparently, the pedals have nothing to do with the game and the user doesn’t have to pedal to get the kart to go on screen.

Exercise Bike for the WiiYou own an exercise bike. You also own a Wii. Why not put them together and save some space in your home? Why not indeed. The Cyberbike is being developed by Bigben Interactive and comes bundled with some hippie game where you have to clean up the planet with your pedalling power.

It’s also compatible with Mario Kart, though I’m guessing you will have a hard time keeping up on that game. The bike is scheduled for a January release in Europe, but we don’t have any pricing details yet. Our guess is that it won’t cost much and will break down pretty quickly.

LG goes all L-Wii with Magic Motion Remote Control

Posted in LG by Conner Flynn on September 7th, 2009

LG goes all L-Wii with Magic Motion Remote Control Who knew that LG was crushing so hard on Nintendo’s Wii? They have it bad for Nintendo’s console. So bad that it is using the Wiimote concept for its new series of TVs called the Magic Motion Remote Control. It features both the typical channel and volume buttons and can be pointed at the TV to control on-screen menus and games. Probably nothing as cool as Mario Kart.

It also has the ability to place a cursor on-screen which can then be manipulated by movements like a flicking of your wrist. The remote goes on sale next year but LG is undecided as to whether it will offer it as an optional extra, or bundle it with its high-end TVs.

PlayOn video-streaming app comes to the Wii

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on August 25th, 2009

PlayOn video-streaming app comes to the WiiTomorrow the folks at MediaMall will officially announce the beta release of PlayOn for Wii. The software license costs $39.99 and there’s also a 14-day free trial so you can try it out first and decide if you like watching Hell’s Kitchen and the like on your Wii.

Me, I’d rather play some Mario Kart. PlayOn for Wii works in the same way as it does for the other game systems and streams Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and a few other online video portals from your Windows XP or Vista computer to the Wii plugged into your TV.

Wii Steering Wheel IIIf you’ve been keeping up with the Jones’, you’ll want to make sure that you get every Wii peripheral they have as well. That includes the Wii Steering Wheel II. It’s available now for hardcore Wii Mario Kart enthusiasts.

I hear ya. How is this any different from the other Wii steering wheels? Well, it fits a Wiimote that is rocking the Motion Plus. Other than that, it’s the usual cheap plastic wiimote holder.

Mario Kart used to show students the danger of texting and driving

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on May 17th, 2009

Mario Kart used to show students the danger of texting and drivingVail Christian High School is educating students about the dangers of texting while driving. Students hold the motion sensitive wheel in one hand, and a cell phone in the other. It’s unclear if they are required to drive as Toad, Mario, or anyone else. But were they sorry when they ended up getting hit by a turtle shell? Did they learn not to text while driving?

Apparently some did. One player said, “I ran into a lot of things and it was very stressful,” Which is interesting, because how stressful can texting and Mario Kart really be? Still, I’m sure it drives the point home to these kids.

Target video game reservation program unveiled

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on April 17th, 2009

targetreservationcardOne of the worst parts about being an avid gamer is that it can be hard to find the newest and coolest video games the day they launch. I have been trying to get a copy of Mario Kart for the Wii for months and can’t find it.

Target has announced a new video game reservation program that is a bit easier to swallow than many pre-order programs that require you to pay for the entire purchase price of the game. The Target program has little cards, which look like gift cards. You pay $1 for the reservation cards and guarantee yourself a copy of whatever game the card is for.
