Gold And silver iPod Lego speakers

Posted in iPod Accessories by Conner Flynn on July 2nd, 2009

Gold And silver iPod Lego speakersNothing says geek like Lego. And nothing ups your status to elite geek like a gold or silver Lego iPod speaker. That’s right, the classic iPod Lego Speaker is now available in silver and gold metallic colors.

They retail for $25 each, but your friends will think you paid more. So go on and bling up that geek desktop. No batteries needed since these suck power from your iPod when plugged in via USB. Go on. Order away. We know you like the shiny stuff. Us too.

Lego robot dock assimilates iPods

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on June 17th, 2009

Lego Robot dock assimilates iPodsYou ask us, this is a pretty cool use of Legos. And if companies don’t want to build robot iPod docks, then damnit, we will make our own. The creator actually built this bot-dock about 2 years ago, and only recently decided that it was time to share it with the internet.

The dock is a cannibalized iPod mini dock, and the robot/base is a mashup of several lego kits. (The AT-AT on the right claw gives it away. That, and the LEGOLAND sticker which came with Lego Soccer.) You can find more pics on flickr.

Botropolis: This week in robotsAnother week has come and gone. As usual, we’ve been keeping tabs on all things robot over at Botropolis. We haven’t had any reports of muscle-bound freaks appearing naked in the street and asking after John Connor, but hell, it’s only 2009. Still, we’re keeping our eyes peeled and we are your first line of defense. When they do strike, we will be ready with up to the minute updates. Here’s some of what we covered this week.

Magic: Octavia the robot gets fooled.

RoboFlush: For the extremely lazy.

T-Shirt: Robots In Disguise.

Fall Out Boy: New Robot Comic Books.

Lego USB hubs are stackable

Posted in USB by Conner Flynn on May 13th, 2009

Lego USB hubs are stackableWe’ve seen our share of Lego USB drives, but these new Lego USB hubs are actually stackable, therefore totally awesome.

Each Lego USB Hub comes with four USB ports, and in a variety of colors that include red, blue, yellow and black. Sadly, they aren’t an official Lego product and so are only available in Korea for about $12 each. That’s a shame. I really wanted to build an entire Lego wall using these and go for the coveted Guinness world record of “Most hubs in a single wall, made by some lonely dork”.

Awesome Lego Donkey Kong level

Posted in lego by Conner Flynn on May 3rd, 2009

Awesome Lego Donkey Kong levelThis is one of the cooler Lego Donkey Kong things we’ve seen in quite some time. Sure, it doesn’t move and actually do stuff like this one, but just look at all that amazing detail.

Hammers, barrels, fire, it has it all. It’s all the more impressive because it doesn’t move. After taking it in for a bit, you feel like it could/should. Sure, Mario and the Princess are just generic Lego people, but that’s maybe it’s only flaw. Look at those ladders and beams. My inner nerd is happy now and so I share it with you.

Steam powered iPod charger

Posted in DIY by Conner Flynn on April 12th, 2009

Steam powered iPod chargerOne day after the robots have had their way with us and the zombies have attacked, you’ll be glad you have your trusty steam powered iPod charger. How else are you going to listen to your tunes, with civilization as you know it destroyed?

The creator attached a Lego Technic Motor to a Jensen #75 steam engine to make this crude generator. Then he built a 5V regulator circuit and soldered in a female USB connection to power any USB device. The end result is a steam powered iPod charger. What does this mean? This guy will be chilling with tunes while you are fending off zombies who want some brain food.

LEGO Ghostbuster’s Ecto 1 car

Posted in lego by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2009

LEGO Ghostbuster’s Ecto 1 carWe’re hoping that this Ghostbuster’s Ecto 1 car will inspire LEGO to issue some official Ghostbusters sets. This beautiful replica comes from LEGO brickmaster Rocko and it’s awesome.

It’s all ready to lay the smack down on some ghosts while violating every traffic law in the state of New York.(Well, the lego New York that you build.) Rocko does great work. Come on LEGO, show some Ghostbusters love.

LEGO movie theater with working projector

Posted in Home Theater by Conner Flynn on March 31st, 2009

LEGO movie theater with working projectorThis tiny LEGO movie theater is awesome. It actually features a working, very tiny movie projector. The projector works at 24 fps, so it may not be good picture quality, but Lego minifigs have a different eyesight than you have. It’s nicely detailed. Even the seats are numbered. Make sure you check out the video below.

The builder, Ricardo M. Oliv, did an awesome job. Now all he needs is full length movies and he can sell tickets to other geeks who can sit their minifigs in the seats with a miniature popcorn and soda.

3D scanner made from Legos

Posted in lego by Conner Flynn on March 23rd, 2009

3D scanner made from LegosWe’ve seen some awesome Lego creations, and this one is just as cool. Philo Hurbain built this 3D scanner because he was looking for a way to model complex Lego parts for use in the LDraw CAD program.

Even the drive components and sensors are made from Lego pieces, except for the probe needle, which is apparently a sewing needle. The “brains” of the device is the Mindstorms NXT. Below, you can watch the device in action as it models a Lego frog.

7 foot long LEGO Star Wars Mon Calamari cruiser

Posted in Star Wars by Conner Flynn on March 22nd, 2009

7 foot long LEGO Star Wars Mon Calamari cruiserYou can buy anything and everything Star Wars if you are an extreme geek, but this here ship is so awesome, it beats all of them. This seven foot long model of the Calamari Cruiser from Return of The Jedi was built by Thomas Benedikt who used 30,500 Lego pieces. It took about 11 months to get it complete with all that detail. That’s 52 pounds of Lego.

The end cost was $5500. And it does more than just look awesome too. It also has an integrated lighting system for cool effects. Thomas Benedikt is obviously a huge fan as well as super talented.

LEGO House is an amazingly detailed computer

Posted in lego by Conner Flynn on February 15th, 2009

LEGO House is an amazingly detailed computerWe’ve seen some pretty impressive Lego creations. Whether it’s the Lego Uzi, the Lego Playstation, or the old Lego safe, one thing is for sure. We love playing with Legos.

This functional LEGO house is a working computer. But the amount of detail that went into it is simply stunning. You could look at it all day and still find more things that you missed. Sadly, the display was not given the LEGO treatment. Hit the link below for a video.

Fully-Automatic LEGO Uzi

Posted in lego by Conner Flynn on February 12th, 2009

Fully-Automatic LEGO UziWe’ve seen Lego guns before, but this one is pretty special. It was inspired by the Micro Uzi and this LEGO weapon packs a punch. It can shoot dozens of rubber bands in just seconds.

Flip the switch and it can go from semi-automatic to fully-automatic. You’ll want to hit the link for a video of the uzi in action, where you will see that this is not your average wimpy rubber band gun. It can fire off rounds as fast as you can pull the trigger. The secret apparently is in the 8 x 1 LEGO beam that pivots around it’s center, for its firing action.

Lego camcorder spotted

Posted in lego by Conner Flynn on February 12th, 2009

Lego camcorder spottedThose Lego-branded Digital Blue devices/toys we’ve been telling you about are starting to surface. This prototype of the video camera was spotted at a toy fair in Nuremberg.

There aren’t any other details at the moment, but it’s a bit disappointing as it looks a little too polished and not handmade like the walkie talkie and digital camera we showed you. Oh well, you win some you lose some. It is a prototype, so who knows, it may go through some changes.

Alcatel + Lego = Lego phone

Posted in lego by Conner Flynn on February 11th, 2009

Alcatel + Lego = Lego phoneAlcatel and Lego teaming up to make a Lego handset? Earlier this year Lego and Digital Blue announced combined efforts that would yield a variety of Lego-electronics aimed at kids. The announcement included details on a digital camera, a walkie talkie and an MP3 player. The functional toys would fall into an affordable $20 - $60 price range.

Now Alcatel is apparently jumping into the mix and the trio is planning to get cell phones in the hands of children using Legos. This piece of Lego-electronics is rumored to be released by this summer along with the rest. Not sure yet if you’ll be able to connect a few of these Lego handsets together or not.

Lightware LED Silverware

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on February 5th, 2009

LED SilverwarePerfect for those romantic candelit dinners, it’s Lightware- the LED lit cutlery. This silverware features a silver head and an engraved crystal body, sure to add to the ambience of any darkly lit dining experience.

They have a small LED powered by a watch battery at the bottom. The electronic part can be removed for washing, because otherwise things would just get gross. Your fork will still stab, but now you will be able to see what you are stabbing. If these don’t impress your date, try the Lego cutlery. At least with those you can join her fork to yours and say something sappy.
