Review: WarnLaser 120mW Tiger Series laser

Posted in Review by Darrin Olson on February 12th, 2009

WarnLaser laser reviewPowerful laser pointers are something that many people are often curious about, however not too often does someone get a chance to handle one. The folks over at WarnLaser recently gave us at the ‘Brick a chance to try out one of their lasers to see what we thought. This is not the first time we’ve had our hands on a laser of this caliber and through this we’ve learned that all lasers are not created equal.

The sample we received is a 120mW Tiger Series GX, running on a couple of standard AAA batteries in a frame about the size of a large pen. In fact, this laser has pen-like clip and can pretty easily fit in a shirt pocket, but might be a little bit heavier than most of the items in your pocket protector at 55 grams. The Tiger Series is a nice balance between power and portability in the array of lasers from WarnLaser. It’s about in the middle of the road – you can get weaker lasers and you can get them much more powerful.

Learn guitar with lasers

Posted in Musical Instruments by Conner Flynn on February 4th, 2009

Learn guitar with lasersYou want to be a Guitar Hero, but you don’t know any songs. Just attach this Maestro device onto your guitar, load a music file of the song you want to learn and it will point out the frets you need to hit, using lasers. As any rock god will tell you, guitars and lasers are an awesome combination.

But just be warned, if you suck, no amount of lasers are going to stop you from sucking. You still have to strum and finger the frets. But it does seem like a great way for guitar players to learn songs quickly. If this concept ever gets made, it would probably do really well.

Create your own bike lane with LightLane

Create your own bike lane with LightLaneIt’s dangerous out there for a bike rider. Do you have any idea how many idiots are out there driving vehicles? Having a bike lane on the street that you’re traveling helps a lot. With a bike lane, drivers are more aware of you and you have your own designated space, which should keep you safe. Unfortunately, bike lanes are not on every street. What do you do?

Make your own, that’s what. Always have a bike lane with you. The LightLane is a concept that uses frikkin lasers to project an illuminated bike lane all around you while you are pedaling away. It keeps you visible to cars, which keeps you alive to bike another day.

LightSpeed Binoculars transmit secure video and audio through Infrared

Posted in Outdoors by Conner Flynn on December 16th, 2008

LightSpeed Binoculars transmit secure video and audio through InfraredThese LightSpeed binoculars were designed mainly for military use and they’re capable of transmitting “untappable” voice and video signals to another set of binoculars using infrared. The LightSpeed system exploits free-space optics, which is the ability to pass data between two points using an optical beam. The method usually involves lasers, but this system uses eye-safe infrared LEDs, similar to those found in TV remotes.

According to Leo Volfson, president of Torrey Pines Logic, which created LightSpeed: “The binocular has an attachment that fits over the ocular side,” Volfson says. “It produces a beam that comes out of the right eye of the binocular. On the left side is a receiver. If you look at me and I look at you, we’ll be able to talk or send information.”

“Yes I Do” soundwave wedding ring

“Yes I Do” soundwave wedding ringHere’s a ring only a married geek could love. Most people engrave their wedding ring with things like “Forever” or “Yes I Do” etc. Instead of engraving those words on a wedding ring, this ring comes with a cut-out of the sound wave of “Yes I Do”. Designer Sakura Koshimizu uses lasers to cut out the shape of the waveform of those sounds.

He’ll use sound editing software, record the sound and the software will show the sound waves on the screen, which can then be fed into a laser. Hey, it’s better then a tattoo. How many ya got now? Pam, Mary, Laura and Britney? Meanwhile you’re married to a Sarah. Yeah, this is much better. You know, just in case.

Review: Wicked Lasers are truly wicked

Posted in Review by Darrin Olson on August 3rd, 2008

Review of Wicked Lasers Elite 125Wicked Lasers recently gave us the opportunity to check out one of their popular laser pointers, which gave us quite a surprise. Actually, before we received it we called it a laser pointer but not any more. Wicked Lasers assured us that it is not a laser pointer – it truly is a wicked laser, and we can’t disagree.

The sample product we received was from the Elite Series of green lasers, specifically the Elite 125. This laser appears to be around the middle of the road for the different lasers offered by Wicked Lasers. The average output power according to the company runs from 125mW to 149mW. They also have lasers in their catalog with as little as 50mW and as much as 300mW. The Elite 125 for us had plenty of power and made it very clear why this is not a laser pointer for regular presentations. For starters it would be difficult to see anything on a presentation screen because the light from the laser is way too bright, even from across a large room. Also, the crowd would be so distracted by what you’re using to point with they’d never pay attention to anything else you’re trying to show them.

Star Wars Death Star wedding cake

Star Wars Death Star wedding cake
Once again we see what happens when you combine geekery with the bakery. We told you about the Atari cake, and the R2-D2 cake. Behold the Death Star wedding cake.

I have to say that it takes a special kind of woman to get onboard with the idea of having any kind of geek cake at her wedding. And symbollically, it’s right on target. After all, many guys would consider marriage to be the final run down the Death Star trench as she shoots a pair of lasers down the hole, blowing your space station to hell.

Jet House is awesome, looks fast

Jet House is awesome, looks fast
Fear not humans, this thing did not just land on our planet and demand that we submit to anal probing. It’s a house designed by Jérôme Olivet, who learned from Philippe Starck. The Jet House is designed to look as if it’s moving fast, despite the fact that it’s molded concrete structure is attached to a metallic building pad.

It’s a two-story structure, the floors connected by an elevator. Olivet calls the style “biomorphic,” and the lines are so beautifully rounded and streamlined that it is very calming. The thing obviously cost a fortune to build. I not only want to live in it, but I want to attach some lasers see it fly through space.

Beamz: Laser beam music system

Posted in Musical Instruments by Conner Flynn on March 31st, 2008

Beamz: Laser beam music systemBeamz is a laser-based invention that is connected to a computer via your USB port. It allows you to pretend you are a musical genius from the year 2355, because you can play hundreds of musical instruments in true Jean Michel Jarre style.(Whoever the hell he is) How does it work you ask? Basically you are creating music by breaking the laser beams with your hands. It automatically generates pre-authored pulses, streams, riffs or loops of musical notes or sounds from a variety of instruments.

The beamz system as a whole has a “W” shape, with six laser beams over two sections. Just connect it via USB to your PC or laptop, and hook up some speakers. You’ll be rocking your lasers in no time. The interface is said to be simple and intuitive, making it easy to choose any of 30 included songs in 19 musical genres, for laying down a complementary rhythm track. The beamz library includes jazz, bluegrass, classical, hip-hop, reggae, heavy metal and more. Available from The Sharper Image for $599.95.

Issey Miyake unveils futuristic handheld cleaner

The future of vacuums
The Wind, Dyson DC16 handheld cleaner looks like it’s a Sci-Fi ray gun from the future, but you are more likely to see Han Solo cleaning up the Millenium Falcon then shooting lasers with this thing. The device is the love child of Miyake designer Dai Fujiwara and James Dyson. They apparently had too much to drink and started brainstorming about how sexy they could make a vacuum.

The result is a sexy new handheld carpet sucker at an affordable price of $194. It’s got a great steampunk look and a trigger. Need I say more?

Doctor Who R/C voice command Dalek

Doctor Who R/C voice command Dalek

I wish I had known about this one before Christmas. I would have put it under the tree for myself. He would be a great companion to the Dalek Web-cam or K-9 remote controlled dog. As any Doctor Who fan knows, Daleks are out to destroy all life in the universe and generally hover around saying “Exterminate. Exterminate.”, before firing lasers at you and sending you to the great beyond, despite the fact that their arms are basically an egg whisk and a sink plunger.

This remote controlled Dalek is a foot and a half tall and able to track moving objects. Plus, you can direct him by radio control. The best part is that he responds to over 30 voice commands. He comes loaded with sound, movement and heat sensors, a bunch of sound and light effects, and his memory stores over 50 Dalek phrases. He’ll cost you about $180 but when you consider that this is probably the best R/C dalek ever, that’s a fair price.

Make your own Blu-ray laser phaser

Posted in PS3,Sci-Fi,Toys by Chetz on November 12th, 2007

Working Blu-ray phaser from PS3The mission for “Star Trek” has always been to boldly go where no one has gone before, to seek out new life and new civilizations but really, we all just wanted the cool gadget that Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock got to play with. We’ve turned our mobile phones into things that resemble those neat palm-sized communicators the Enterprise crew had and we’re working on the transporter next. For those fans that really want to own a piece of the Enterprise there are models, props and toys made to resemble Starfleet’s best including a toy model of “Star Trek”‘s futuristic gun, a phaser. But why hasn’t some toy company made a phaser that actually emits a laser beam when you fire it? You think that with the low cost of today’s lasers that some toy manufacturer would have leapt on this idea. Leave it to one creative individual to make our geek dreams come true!

MMORPG

MMORPG (Massively Multi-Player Online Role Playing Game) is a term used to define games in which a large group of people can play online at the same time and interact with each other.

By definition, these games are RPG (Role Playing Games) in which a player assumes the persona of hero and completes a series of quests and either cooperates or competes with other players for rewards and experience which they use to advance their skills and abilities in order to complete increasingly difficult tasks.
