Bowers & Wilkins announces Zeppelin Mini iPod dock

Posted in Bowers & Wilkins by Shane McGlaun on September 17th, 2009

bwzepplinminiOne of the better iPod docks that I have tested in recent years was the cool (and pointy) Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin. The only real downside to that thing was that it was very large for a speaker dock. I guess B&W felt the same way and the company has unveiled a new smaller Zeppelin Mini iPod dock.

Ironically, the only simularity between the original Zeppelin and the new Zeppelin Mini is the name. The Mini has a rotating docking arm that allows the iPod to be turned to landscape mode for viewing album art. The device also has a USB port to allow you to stream music from PMPs attached via USB as well as your Mac or PC.

Bose SoundDock 10 is HUGE, costs $600Bose has seen fit to park an iPod in front of a monolith. This thing must weigh 20 pounds. The subwoofer is the size of a child’s head. And it costs $600. Yet they still call it an iPod dock. It’s about a foot tall. It’s not really all that portable, which I guess it isn’t supposed to be.

The dock connector can be swapped out to suit different players, or, for an extra $150 you can get a stereo Bluetooth adapter. Bose also threw in a composite video port, so you can see photos and videos on your TV.

That’s just what they’ve done with the hybrid Lexus LF-Ch Concept. They’ve added rear seat headrest-mounted iPhone docks. That should help keep your little hellions quiet on your next roadtrip.

Assuming you or your kids own an iPhone of course. But hey if you are driving a Lexus, I’m sure you can afford one or two iPhones. The LF-Ch also has storage in the rear seat armrests for small items like iPods, PDAs and cell phones.

Yamaha's MCR-140 Wireless iPod Dock looks retro and awesomeWow. We are really seeing some actual cool iPod docks this week. Yamaha’s latest are amazing looking. It’s not just looks either, it’s made with metal, not plastic and apparently that doesn’t hurt the audio quality very much. In fact it is said to have a very rich sound and the “highs aren’t tinny like most—and there’s some nice bass response”.

What strikes us most about the MCR-140 is the awesome retro look, but some other features include: a wireless transmitter that attaches to the bottom of your iPod and streams music using Yamaha’s “uncompressed” wireless tech instead of using Blueooth. The MCR-040 (the orange one) is the exact same unit, but not wireless. They also handle CD, FM and USB.

Sirius XM SkyDock converts your iPhone into a Satellite RadioSirius XM’s SkyDock isn’t super sexy. It isn’t elegant. The dock uses iPhone OS 3.0’s new hardware support and plugs into your car’s DC jack for power and support. This dock will cost you $120, plus the required subscription to Sirius XM radio. A free companion app sets your iPhone up as a radio controller. Pretty cool.

sendstation-sbOne of the things that I never liked about my iPod and the iPhone was that you always had to carry that Apple charge and sync cable with you. I would like to be able to take a plain USB cable with me that would allow me to charge several of my gadgets with one cable.

A new device called the PocketDock from SendStation has been announced that allows you to charge with a normal mini USB cable and connect the iPod to your home stereo. The device plugs into the charge port of your iPod and offers a 3.5mm output and a mini USB plug.
