Apple’s next-gen iPad to get iPod touch-like back, wide-range speaker?

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on December 23rd, 2010

Take this one with the usual grains of salt, but according to Chinese sources the next iPad will have a 3-mm reduction in bezel width, the same 9.7-inch display size, and will have a flattening of the back allowing it to rest better on a desktop. It all sounds very plausible, right?

There’s also a “wide-range speaker” covered with “metal mesh”. The overall unit is said to measure 239 x 186 mm compared to the current iPad’s 242.8 x 189.7 mm footprint. Word is that the new iPads will begin shipping from factories in January.

iPod Touch bedding

Posted in iPod by Conner Flynn on January 3rd, 2010

This is how the true Apple fanboy/girl sleeps. Why leave your precious iPod Touch every night when you can sleep with it. In it. It’s like you are part of the OS, all snug and cozy in your case.

You get the covers that look like an iPod touch and a matching pillow. Only $49. Does that mean you can’t get new blankets until they do a firmware upgrade? Me, I’d rather sleep in a Zune. I just need more space.

iPod Touch hides faster Wi-Fi and space for camera

Apple iPod Touch has hidden faster N Wi-Fi and space for possible cameraThe same folks at ifixit.com who tore down the newly released iPod nano from last week also got their hands on Apple’s newest version of the iPod touch and carefully broke it down as well. In doing this they found some interesting surprises.

In dismantling the iPod touch, they found a faster 802.11n Broadcom wireless chip, still inactive but bringing wireless-N in addition to the a,b and G in the touch. Chances are that some OS update, hopefully in the not too distant future, will enable this faster wireless connection.

Solar powered Surge iPod Touch charger

Posted in iPod Touch by Conner Flynn on September 9th, 2009

Solar powered Surge iPod Touch RechargerSolar power has come a long way. They used to be something you only saw on hippie communes and Sci-fi movies. Solar panels are on everything now, especially our charging gadgets. The latest to sport a solar panel is the Surge iPod Touch charger, which allows you to recharge your iPod Touch anywhere, as long as you have sunlight.

The case features a 3.7 V lithium-ion battery that can be charged via the sun or by USB should it be cloudy. It comes in a bunch of colors. We aren’t sure if they have chargers for the other iPods, but at least your Touch is covered.

Apple tried to silence owner of exploding iPod?

Posted in Apple by Conner Flynn on August 3rd, 2009

Apple tried to silence owner of exploding iPodWe’ve heard our share of stories involving overheating iPod batteries. Well, there’s an article in today’s Times UK about 11-year-old Ellie Stanborough, whose iPod touch blew up last month. Her father contacted Apple for a refund, got a little bit of a runaround, which is not unusual, and was eventually sent a settlement agreement offering a full refund as long as the family agreed to keep the deal confidential.

That’s pretty standard practice in these situations, but the agreement had a lot of lawyer-speak with a bunch of stuff that could be interpreted as vaguely threatening language about how breaking confidentiality might result in Apple relentlessly going after you. So the media coverage gets all amped up.

Botropolis: This week in robots

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on May 22nd, 2009

BotropolisAnother week, another robot roundup. John Connor really has his work cut out for him. Right now it may be cute to make Nuclear Fuel Cells that fuel Terminators, or Transforming dinosaurs, but it’s no longer fun and games when a naked Terminator shows up in your town and steals your clothes and motorcycle. Here’s some of what we covered on Botropolis this week:

NSFW: A Girl Gets Transformed.

iPod Touch: It makes a good robot head.

iRobot: Ember bots.

To Serve and Protect: Robocop armor.

iPhone 3.0 OS reveals new iPhones, iPods

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on March 19th, 2009

iPhone 3.0 features cut-and-paste, a whole lot moreThere are always rumors of a new iPhone model, but how about two new iPhone models and a couple of new iPod touches? It looks like a deconstruction of the beta 3.0 build provided to developers this week has uncovered product code “iPhone2,1″ found before plus a newer, “iPhone3,0.”

The iPhone 3G is identified as “iPhone1,2,”. The current iPod touch is “iPod2,1″, but models “iPod2,2″ and “iPod3,1″ have both been rooted out of the binary. We would likely see new iPhone models in June.

Metal Gear Solid Touch hits App Store

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on March 19th, 2009

mgst-sbOne of the games that drove me to buy my first Sony PlayStation was Metal Gear Solid. I really liked that game, though I didn’t find many of the sequels to be as much fun as the original. One of the hallmarks of the Metal Gear series was that it was a PlayStation exclusive game.

Konami has taken the series outside the Sony fold and is now offering a new title called Metal Gear Solid Touch for the iPhone and iPod touch. The game is available now on the App Store for $7.99. Konami says that the game has been redesigned to take advantage of the controls used on the iPhone and touch.

Ewoo eFizz iPod dockiPod docks. Are you sick of them? Don’t worry, this one manages to stand out a bit. This Swiss made EWOO eFizz home dock and sound system boasts 70 watts of power and is now shipping in the US.

It boasts great sound and a great look sure, but the really interesting thing about this one is the 2-way radio remote that allows you to control your entire iPod, iPhone or iTouch through the remote. What you see on your iPod, you will also see right on the remotes 1.8″ screen, even cover art.

BTKeyMini Bluetooth keyboard for iPhone typing

Posted in iPhone Accessories by Conner Flynn on November 6th, 2008

BTKeyMini Bluetooth keyboard for iPhone typingTyping on the iPhone’s touchscreen is pretty awkward. It’s really no fun. Your life is about to get easier thanks to the BTKeyMini, a Bluetooth keyboard for the iPhone and iPod Touch. This small keyboard has a cover that also holds your iPhone. It should fit in even a very small briefcase. It uses a battery of it’s own so it won’t suck off of your iPhone. There’s still the iPhone’s lack of copy and paste, but hey this will still make it easier for you. It almost makes your iPhone into a laptop. No word on when it’s shipping, but it will cost you $92.

Obama rocks the iPhone

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on October 2nd, 2008

Obama rocks the iPhoneThe Vice Presidential debate this evening will take place in about a half hour. Earlier Obama for America announced the release of Obama ‘08: The Official Application for iPhone and iPod touch. Much like the USB bracelet we told you about, it’s another way to connect with the candidate. The app is free and is available for download now. The app makes it easier for Obama volunteers to get involved by making calls on the candidate’s behalf.

You’ll also get news updates, news coverage, local events, media from the campaign trail, and of course Obama’s and Biden’s stance on “essential issues facing Americans.” I’m interested to see what kind of affect this has on election results as I don’t see anything like this coming from McCain’s camp. It makes it clear that the youth/tech savvy vote is Obama’s. And he’s making it easy for them to get more involved. McCain may take credit for the Blackberry, but good luck getting an email from him anytime soon. I’m pretty sure his phone still has a rotary dial.
